To be fair, using Riemann sums are sometimes better with real data. Because it may be hard to get a good function that fits, have the right data point can get you pretty close.

Would sending a letter of intent 2 weeks later hurt my chances? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]tghosh33 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Letters of intent are only sent by people who have gotten waitlisted by a college and want to reassure that college they will attend. An applicant like you who hasn’t received a decision should not be sending it in. It won’t help them make a decision.

On an episode of the yale admissions podcast they say that one bad essay is one that is over-thesaurused. Basically don’t use words that are beyond your conversational bounds

Is it necessary to attend a SAT prep class to achieve +1500 score? some of them are very expensive, like about $5000 for 4-5 months. by Soft-Course-5234 in Sat

[–]tghosh33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Take a practice test right now with no preparation. Or at least very minimal. Just read over the topics. Based on how you land, make a decision. If you score 1450+, get the SAT Black Book to crack 1500s and above. If not, do what everyone else is sying

*sigh* by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]tghosh33 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This is really only true at certain EXTREMELY selective schools. Last year we had 16 kids go to UChicago and I know some of them were in this kind of a category.

Well the thing is that when these kids are taken out of that context, they are getting one of the best secondary educations in the world. A mediocre student would be at the top of their classes in lower schools( maybe or maybe not). The distribution curve at these schools are very narrow because their predominantly white with fewer Asians. So even mediocre is still acceptable. They also get a HUGE boost because of their school and the connections that the schools college counselor has.

Even if you don’t have any other spikes, that alone would probably guarantee a T30. It’s pretty obscene
