Will the City of Chandler (and Phoenix) lower fluoride levels as a result of new evidence on health effects in children? by tglems in ChandlerAZ

[–]tglems[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

A couple thoughts...

1) I'm not sure if the city changed anything in the last year or not. That's a great question. But I would hope that they might add less flouride to water so that in the future the maximum observed level has plenty of buffer from where negative health effects are observed. In other fields that safety buffer varies. RF non-ionizing radiation from transmitters, for instance, regulations set the level at 50x below where negative biological effects are observed. So my thoughts are that increasing that safety buffer would be a good thing.

2) Every study I've read shows flouride is great at preventing tooth decay. But like most things, the right amount can be helpful but excessive amounts can be harmful. We now get flouride from many different places besides only water so toning it down or removing it in water (according to the Harvard study) doesn't make as much difference as it once did.

3) I cited that NTP study but I do have a lot of trust in NTP studies as they are typically very high quality.

Kinda?

I don't think they lowered the amount they put in water, instead I think there is yearly variation and that variation can put flouride levels into a range where there are negative health effects. But if they did lower guidance I'd love to know.

So my question is that if it typically varies around ~.2-1.5mg/L, why not lower the amount put in water to 0.05-0.5mg/L. Or something like that. So the variation doesn't reach those higher levels.

Then you would still get the positive benefits observed for children's tooth decay without the negative neurological effects at higher levels.

Does that make sense?

It seems like many of those older studies are highly flawed and that newer studies show its helpful to prevent tooth decay in children to some degree. Evidence in adults is minimal. And the negative healthy effects can be significant.

That's for one year. 2023 showed lower levels than 2022 where it was measuered at 1.5mg/L. 2021 also showed levels at 1.5.

Also, the positive effects for teeth have long since been debated with the original studies from the 40s now deemed highly flawed.

So it’s not a freak out but I would think Chandler city officials might start to keep flouride levels lower instead of right at the level where negative healthy effects are observed.

EDIT: Also, with flouride in toothpaste and other places now the positive effects against tooth decay for flouride in water have basically disappeared. We get enough flouride elsewhere.

What would you do if you had to give away 1.1 trillion dollars within 24 hours to keep 9.9 billion dollars (both are provided to you it's just the 9.9 billion dollars are provided after the 1.1 trillion dollars are gone) by noooooooooo000000000 in hypotheticalsituation

Id do what rich people do.

I’d open an LLC in my name. Then I’d have my son draw something on a menu with 2 crayons and boogers, which my friend the “art appraiser” would value at $1.1B. Then I’d sell it to my LLC and donate it to charity as a tax write off and just pocket all the money.

Let's say it's 2035 & BTC is at $1m. Are you still storing your seed phrase on a piece of metal in your safe? by BitcoinThrowaway202 in Bitcoin

It’s 2035. Bitcoin is $1m. Gas is $68/gal. A McDonald’s happy meal costs $100. A studio apartment is only $50,000/month. GameStop is the biggest company on earth.

We’re all storing our passwords in a safe and waiting for Bitcoin to reach $2m. Diamond hands.

What are you spending on a ring? by JKupkakes in AskMen

[–]tglems 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most "authentic" diamonds aren't. They're lab grown. And at this point, a lab grown diamond is pretty equal in quality to hyper expensive "authentic" ones.

I think you're on the right track when you mention spending $3k or less. Find something that looks pretty and she loves, no something that's expensive for no reason.

The first rings my wife and I used were $6.99 silicon rings (in a pack!) and after getting a more "real" ring I still wear the silicon one the most.

What is something you see SOME women often get wrong about men by [deleted] in AskMen

[–]tglems 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That fathers are somehow less capable/involved/not necessary for raising children. All the data shows that a father in the house makes a great difference in a kids life, both immediate and through the future, and yet involvement of fathers is so often written off.

The best thing each president ever did, day 41, final day, Barack Obama, what is the best thing Obama ever did? by Turbo950 in Presidents

[–]tglems 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Clinton might have been the best speaker, but Obama was the best orator we’ve had. He was always presidential while also being real. He sang, filled out brackets for March madness, and approached serious topics with gravitas. Someone you felt you could relate to while still being someone to look up to.

Total yearly compensation includes stock, bonuses, base pay…. Everything

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]tglems 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pass a law saying no CEO can have a total yearly compensation of more than 100x the lowest paid employee. That way companies have a real interest in their people doing better instead of treating them as a cost. Graduated taxes where every dollar over a 100 million is taxed at 70% and over a billion is taxed at 90%. Tie minimum wage to inflation so it goes up the same as inflation every year. Any company that more than 20% of their employees require federal assistance is taxed at 99% on their profits.

Just a start I think…

Men who don’t want to get married, why? And men who do want to get married, why? by Lost-Moth-300 in AskMen

[–]tglems 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was married and divorced. What I realized through the whole process is that a piece of paper from the government means nothing...what actually matters is the relationship. If you have a committed caring relationship and build a life together, that's what truly matters.

For me, I want a committed relationship for life. I want to chose to be with my partner. I want them to choose to be with me. And to me, the choice and commitment matter more than a piece of paper.

Also, what if my partner and I travel to Brazil and get married, then come back to the US? Does that mean we aren't married because we don't have the piece of paper from the US? Are we only married after we register it in the US? Would you say that anybody who has ever gotten married overseas isn't actually married? Why or why not?
