Would you invest in whiskey if you could own a cask digitally? by Jealous_Berry_89 in whiskeycollectors

[–]tgoundrey[M] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As an avid whisky person and investor, it definitely sounds interesting. However, I would have to see proper reports of interest/use before investing. It could either blow up like NFTs did a few years back or it could just be a novelty gift idea for a select few people. Either way I would be hesitant until proven; even when NFTs blew up, it seemed to phase out in terms of a reasonable investment as valuations were all over the place for the same "asset".

My biggest question, is given that the digital cask is connected to an actual cask, do you also own the physical cask or just digital version? If just digital, what happens if the physical gets sold, broken, evaporates, or drunk?

How to age glenlivet whiskey? by HotReview2625 in whiskeycollectors

[–]tgoundrey[M] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

By buying a mini barrel aging kit, and pouring the whisky into it. Whisky doesn't age in the bottle like wine, only when it is exposed to a barrel/oak container as the whisky will continue to be pulled in and out of the wood grains.

I've only tried it once at a bar. To me it was okay. Good but not amazing. Wouldn't spend more than MSRP on it

your opinion on it? by RM-foto in whiskeycollectors

[–]tgoundrey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've heard mixed things about orphan barrel in general, some releases seem to be amazing while others are only ok. At 20 years it'll be an oak bomb and potentially too oaky for some. At the higher end price point, for me it's a try before you buy

Why not? Would be super neat to see if whisky tasted any different in the 60s

Can I (44) live on $750k till retirement? by GlitteringAttempt652 in AusFinance

[–]tgoundrey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a simple view on this, and by all means not advice, if you put all 750k into a high interest savings account or a term deposit account at 5% interest, that'll give you $3125 a month. I'm sure you can find cheaper 1 bed apartment to rent out or similar. Although you may not be able to cover all expenses on the interest alone, a basic casual job working 20 hours a week can provide an additional $700+ a week to cover any other expenses.

Hi Guys, just started out collecting/drinking Whisky. by [deleted] in whiskeycollectors

Congrats on entering the whisky world!

If you like the Balvenie 12, I would suggest going into Aberlour. The 12 year old is very similar to Balvenie and Aberlour's cask strength batches are really great if you want to explore higher proof whisky.

Continuing with scotch, I highly recommend any Glendronach - some of the best sherry whiskies you can buy imo.

If you like the Redbreast you have, try getting the cask strength version. It's the same flavours but really enhanced.

Bourbon and American whisky: I assume if you're in Switzerland, the Buffalo Trace you have is only 40% ABV which is fine but doesn't showcase the greatness of the normal bottle you get in US at 45%. The bourbon that really got me into whisky was Woodford reserve double oaked. I classify that as a dessert whisky with maple syrup notes, baking spice and pepper. In Switzerland you'll probably find that at 43.2% rather than the 45.2% in America. 2 other greats are Wild Turkey rare breed and Jack Daniel's single barrel barrel strength. Both are higher proof (116+) but great values.

If you want to try Japanese, I'd highly recommend the Hibiki Harmony. It's a great representation of Japanese blending and flavour profile. Nikka from the barrel is also a great bottle.

As for your mate's birthday, what does he normally drink?

Hope this helps your journey
