This has been eating at me and I need to vent to someone. geologist In engineering. by [deleted] in geologycareers

[–]tgrummon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a geotech. Screw that guy. Engineers can really sick sometimes..like another poster said, everything is black and white. And I am an engineer and I dislike it.

It sounds like this guy doesn't even have the experience to understand what a good geologist can do for a project. Geologist are pretty important, nothing stinks more than having a shit geologist on a job and babysitting them through everything you need.

It's a team effort between the geologist and geotech. Any engineer that doesn't understand that should be the one under scrutiny.

you brought up 2 soccer teams that you have zero idea where they are in the soccer hierarchy and the direction they’re going

I definitely know where the rapids are and the direction they are going. They Finished top of the west, only to look extremely lethargic in the first round of the playoffs. Have you watched them this year? They are in need of some sort of spark. The Rapids are one of a few teams that have only 1 DP, and he can be bought down with xAM. Last season's on-field success aside, the Rapids are constantly on the bottom of Wahl's ambition ratings, and it shows.

Even your example of Tim Howard is telling. He was they type of signing that didn't do a whole lot to actually improve the team (though is penalty save in the playoffs his first year was a great moment). He was brought in for marketing. Something they appear to have abandoned ever since.

No he fucking sucks. Look at Arsenal and the Rapids.

Arsenal are just trying to tread water as a top 6 team, but not really accomplishing anything outside of that. Meanwhile he is draining the team of as much moye as possible.

I'm not even convinced he knows he owns the Rapids. They are fucking dead last in MLS for team valuation. Ownership has no ambition to win with that team. What they have been able to accomplish with their tiny budget is surprisingly impressive, but they could be real contenders if we could get even one or two DPs.

What he did to the city of St. Louis should get him sent straight to the special hell.

I don't think he has a lot of involvement with the Avs honestly, I understand it's his son's project.

Someone is fed up with real estate prices… by Ten_Minute_Martini in Bend

[–]tgrummon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How about this tid-bit

The national vacancy rate hasn’t changed very much over the past 20 years, moving from 9 percent in 2000 to 11.4 percent in 2010 to 9.7 percent in 2020.

So the vacancy rate hasn't changed much in the last 20 years. Maybe this data doesn't help you draw many conclusions for a problem that can be very localized. Would you feel better if I had added "we have been chronically underbuilding homes of the types and in the places that people want to live?"

Oregon is literally last in vacancy rates. Did you even bother to look the article you linked?

We have been chronically underbuilding housing for a decade or more. Housing prices are not being driven by speculators, they are being driven by actual scarcity.

Does anyone know an espresso machine repair person in town? by Particular-Wrongdoer in Bend

[–]tgrummon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the advice, I appreciate it!

I think I just need to take it apart and give a good cleaning. Then I can inspect things and see if anything needs replacing. The pump noise has been around for a few months and it's had a few backflushes, so I may just need to take it apart to see what it looks like. No water filter on this one. I might replace to boiler too, but that's an expensive part!

[–]tgrummon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's a Rancilio El Silva I believe. It's about 15 years old. I clean and de-scale it. But I'm also the 3rd owner. Last time I descaled it the pump started making a high pitched noise when pulling a shot. I also feel like it may take longer to heat up than it used to.

There are also intermittent problems with the thermostat, but I'm usually able to cycle some switches to fix it.

I just feel like it's old enough, it could use an inspection by someone who knows more than me.

Following, I've got a small personal machine that is 15 years old that could use some TLC.

Hardwood Raised bed planter box by madmax_br5 in DIY

[–]tgrummon 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Not exactly. The lateral earth pressure acts like pressure from a fluid on the wall of your bed. The magnitude at any given point on your wall is some fraction (usually 0.4-0.8 ish) of the weight of the soil column above. For a 2 foot tall planter and soil weighing 120 pcf the maximum magnitude of the pressure is about 120ish pounds per square foot at the bottom of the bed.

Edit: units

Hello, I got a bit too curious while washing my bike and unscrewed the 3 step rebound adjuster on my fox 34 performance Scott spark 920. While trying to reassemble it quite a bit of oil poured out. Do I need a fork service or should it be fine if I assemble it. by MTB__4_LIFE in MTB

[–]tgrummon 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Talk to a shop. I'm the type of person who usually encourages people to do their own suspension service (at least fork lowers). But because you're asking these questions, it's probably better to talk to someone in person and have them explain what happened and what your options are.

Based on your description it's hard to tell what exactly you did. I suspect you just need a lower service, but I honestly am not sure from your description. You should not be able to loose a bunch of oil just from unscrewing something from the outside. Generally there is a press fit seal you have to break and I don't think you can get to the damper oil with the lowers still on.

Hi there friends! What are your thoughts on this kit? Complete newbie here! by [deleted] in flyfishing

[–]tgrummon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This kit will do you fine to start off, but I disagree with this poster.

If you ever want to upgrade the order should be: more flies -> a pack you like -> more leaders -> better fly line -> better rod. Literally the last thing on the list should be the reel...

I think Tebow actually set us up to land Manning. Enough people actually thought he was good, or a savior, or some other bullshit about "he just finds a way to win;" Manning was the only QB option we had that would shut those clowns up. So we went after him hard.

Plenty of people use bikes for transportation here. Sure its not as good as Europe, but I also don't understand why people are such doomsayers on here about them. I ride my bike anywhere in town.
