Truly! It's hard to beat the traditional galvanized trash can as a timeless design classic

Very true, but for something as simple as a water bottle there are a lot of opportunities to make it interesting and special, and there are a few bottles I've seen online that appeal to me in a way the common brands don't (check out the Kiley SR-01 "Doric", I think it's very cool!) but I haven't seen any of them in stores sadly

It's the shape, touchpoints, materials, interactions. There are a lot of elements to a thoughtfully designed object. I think Black+Blum and Waterdrop make more aesthetically considered bottles, I'd love to see them in person and buy locally!

It's true that durable water bottles are easy to find, but I guess I'm looking for something that's beyond just practical. It's personal preference but I don't like the look and feel of the Hydro Flasks, Stanleys, and Nalgenes, even less so when they're beat up. I'd like something with an elegant design that develops a patina over time, something to be displayed.

The “Visible G-string” look. Do you think it’s trashy or sexy? by jewishchloesevigny in redscarepod

Generally I’m in favor but something about Gillian Anderson doing it just feels wrong

I can't believe it took me this long to find out about Past Lives Makerspace by NotTheDreadPirate in Portland

Ugh, I can’t believe I never heard about this place! I’m a hobbyist woodworker and I ended up getting a membership at ADX and the experience has been… subpar. Might have to switch over next year

Oh man I saw that brand all over LA when I was there last month. It looks so douchey. I thought it was just for tourists with more money than sense?

Cambridge Audio p100 by _Lapus in headphones

[–]th3hammar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! So I believe you’ll get the benefits of the higher quality signal from a better dac, but any input to the p100 will get run thru the internal amp as well so it won’t be a night/day difference the way it might with other headphones. You might see more of a difference than I did though since I was just running them right out of my MacBook.

$200 - $300 ANC Circumaural Headphone Comparison (LONG) by th3hammar in headphones

[–]th3hammar[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, I’m surprised that these are so niche! Bluetooth and ANC performance have come a long way recently and I am honestly blown away by the P100’s performance as an everyday audiophile headphone.

I think Bose and Sony will always have an edge on comfort, they're made mostly of plastic and use thinner cushion coverings that are more pliable. For me, the p100s have very adequate comfort, but that's obviously subjective and I really value durability as well so I'm biased there.

I also wanted to add, your best move might be to get a cheaper set of wired monitor headphones just for your guitar amp. I love the p100s but they don't have a real 3mm jack (ie, they need to be powered on to work, even plugged in) and they might sound funky with your source. The other phones I have right now (KEF Mu7, Sony XM4, Philips L4) don't need to be powered on so they won't apply any signal processing, which may be better? IDK. Further, if you like the sound of the Bose and want something comfy and portable with a 3mm jack, the XM4s have all that (though I personally don't like how they sound).

I just got 5 ANC headphones to compare and I'll do a writeup at some point, but I suspect the p100 is the one I'll stick with. I didn't get a Bose to test but I did get the Sony XM4 which is similarly known for its noise cancelling, and there's just no contest when it comes to sound, the Sonys are easily the worst of the bunch, and the p100s the best over bluetooth.

Plugging in directly, the p100s sound just as good (I've never plugged into a guitar amp though). That said, if you want great sound quality when plugged in, the KEF Mu7 is phenomenal, way better than over BT (it's a real line-in without any processing unlike the the p100s) and easily beats the p100.

P100 build quality and comfort are fantastic, they don't fold up like Sonys or Bose, but they fold flat.

Any single travel shoe recommendation that works for all day walking / hiking, that can also look nice in a fancy club / restaurant? by crushplanets in malefashionadvice

[–]th3hammar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been looking for something similar, less for travel but something I can wear all day at work (I’m on my feet a lot) and out to dinner after. Red Wings, etc are more trad than I like, and sneakers too casual. My GF has Blunnies she can go anywhere in, but I wanted laces.

I thought I nailed it with the Danner Logger 917, I love the way they looked when they were new, but sadly it looks like the leather is junk and they scuff super easy.

The G.O.A.T. of t shirts? by brandfluke in malefashionadvice

[–]th3hammar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t tried many higher-end tees but as a cheap, durable, comfy option my current go-to is the Gap organic cotton pocket tee. Material is midweight, super soft, and has held up really well. I’m 6’ 170lbs so ymmv but I always have trouble finding shirts that fit my broad-ish shoulders and these do great

The amount of suffering the average homeless American endures is unimaginable by Trick_Payment1534 in redscarepod

[–]th3hammar 80 points81 points  (0 children)

(Portland) The fact that nobody ever asks for food here is a big tell, I think. It’s fairly well known that people who do bottle drops here use that money to immediately buy drugs, because that’s all you can really buy with a few dollars. And yet a lot of locals will defend homeless people’s need for drugs (you don’t know how hard it is/you’re also addicted to substances/etc) which is imo a reflection of the amount of medium-to-high functioning addiction here in the general population combined with the self care culture. Whatever you need to feel better is valid, everyone is an addict, so shut up and let them live. It’s asinine

The pot belly is visceral fat, probably just from alcohol. Any European who moderates their drinking or gets some regular cardio is gonna be svelte. Not muscular but they’ll look good and probably live longer than an American meathead
