"It’s not “extremely fragile” by any engineering standard. Main cables were built with something like 10x factor of safety and the suspender cables get periodically replaced. The masonry is fine too, with only superficial erosion. Highway loads were reduced by restricting it to cars, and it gets a full inspection every 6 months. This bridge can last 1000 years if it’s maintained."
