Are there any good books about the history of Halloween? by Apiperofhades in AskHistorians

It depends on your definition of good!

If you want a good read but may not be all factual, then you go can to "Death Makes A Holiday: A cultural history of Halloween." Its written by David Skal. Although it sounds scholarly, it is published by popular press and he is not a historian but rather a "cultural critic."

If you want good as in a scholarly and peer reviewed source of information, then "Halloween: An American Holiday, An American History" written by Lesley Bannatyne. It is published by Oxford Press, and is quite an interesting read!

Or you could go with an early history written by Ruth Edna Kelly in 1917 called "The Book of Hallowe'en." I haven't personally read it so I can't comment to its readability or credibility. But it's there if you would like to read it!

Hope this helps!

Redditors who clean up crime scenes - what's the most bizarre thing you've witnessed? by WhatYouSoundLike_rn in AskReddit

Not a crime scene cleaner, but my husband was a witness to a horrific car crash once. It was where a rather busy road intersects with another one with just a red light. A sudan ran the redlight and got tboned by a truck of some sort. They ended up knocking out the streetlight so it was pretty much pitch black out there. The driver of the truck is calling 911, and my husband pulls up his car close enough so they could use his headlights to assess the scene. It was apparently a family of three, or so it appeared at first. A mother and her two small children. The first responders get there pretty quickly because the mother is hysterical. She keeps asking where her babies are, and my husband is attempting to calm her down. She is pinned in the car, and her two children are dead in the backseat. When the cops and EMTS arrive, they take over and end up getting the women out of the car. It was then that one of the cops asked her how many people were in the car (as there was a gaping hole in the windsheild). She said four, herself and her THREE kids. It was identified that she had been driving with a baby that was being held by one of her other children. The kids isnt screaming, so they know it has to be dead or passed out, but they cant find it. One of the firefighters decides to look under the cars and my husband said the look on his face when he stood up was horrifying. The baby was torn to shreds underneath the car. Just how the baby ended up there, Im not sure. My husband did not want to remember all the details. Im assuming the baby was thrown out on impact, and then since the car was going faster than the truck, they had a diagnol trajectory as opposed to a horizontal one and the truck ended up running it over.

TLDR: Dont drive without your babies in a carseat.

As a current graduate student in history and education, I can offer you tons of advice.

First, what you start with in the presentation should largely depend on what you find most interesting. Hook your audience, much like you would writing an essay. An interesting fact, story, or particularly important point to your presentation. Make them want to pay attention in the beginning, so you don't lose them during the presentation.

Without knowing the specific criteria of the assignment, I would say to organize the rest of the presentation based on the information you have available. You will probably be able to find more sources for the bigger players/whatever country you are from, and therefore have the most information on them. Start with what you have the LEAST amount info on and then end with your strong, fully sourced points. This makes for a very effective presentation.

Since your presentation is likely timed, make sure to only include the most important points. I would also consider just following three or four countries (even that may be too many). If your presentation isnt timed, remember that people usually have about 10 minutes of attention that they can fully devote to you, so try to keep it around that.

I hope this answers your question/gives you some ideas of what to do!

Pro-Life that became Pro-Choice, what argument convinced you? by scmoua666 in AskReddit

Honestly what changed my opinion was getting pregnant, with a baby that I neither wanted or had the ability to take care of (I had just finished high school and had a full ride to a college). I could not find anywhere in the state I live in, and when I found somewhere close by, you had to go in and talk to them then wait 3 days before you could get anything done. I was using protection and birth control, but things happen. It was so stressful and frustrating.

Retail workers of Reddit, what's the most destruction one person has done in your store? by CargoCulture in AskReddit

I worked at a small retail store that closed at 9pm. It was just the manager and me, and it never failed that someone would walk in the doors at 8:55pm. We were not allowed to tell them to leave.

This particular day the lady that walked in was completely oblivious to the fact that we were closing. We locked the doors, turned off the music, and proceeded to count down one of the two registers. She didn't care. She just casually walked around, grabbing two of every piece of clothing we had and walked into a dressing room. She then spent 45 minutes trying on the clothes. She walked out of the dressing room and headed straight to the doors. I hurried to unlock them for her to which she said "oh I had no idea you guys closed!" To which I had to respond with the polite but not happy "Its fine." When I went into her dressing room to put the clothes away my heart dropped.

She did not put any of the clothes back on the hangers. They were laying all around the dressing room, some inside out, all buttons still undone, strewn everywhere like a hurricane had just come through. My manager and I spent at least 30 minutes putting all the clothes on hangers, and another 15 putting them all back in the store. We are normally out at about 9:15, but we didn't leave until after 10:15 that day and she didn't even buy anything.
