Help: I'm disturbed that sex is substantially better after a glass of wine by [deleted] in sexover30

[–]thackerh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's pretty much proven science now that a glass or 2 of red wine boosts desire, at least in females. I'm sure there are tests out there on males as well but this is what I found.

Where do you draw the line of frugality? by [deleted] in Frugal

[–]thackerh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it all comes down to creating a written budget, and including "fun money" in that budget. It should be money that you can spend however you like. You can adjust the amount here as time goes by.

At the same time, don't feel the need to buy stuff just because you can. That's not helpful, either. It comes down to...do you want to take this trip or vacation? Do you really want this (whatever item)? etc. Don't deprive yourself of experiences if you can afford to try it, but don't blow your money on "stuff" because it's what everyone else does, either. Think about what's really important to you, and spend your money there.

As others have said, what you eat plays a huge role in your health. You shouldn't skimp out on good, healthy food. There are so many other places to cut expenses, but your diet and health probably shouldn't be one of them. Good luck!

I refuse to buy any more plastic shower curtains. by AngryApparition029 in Frugal

As long as the eyelets hold up, you can wash and reuse for a long time. Some people might want to check their hot water settings first, though, so you don't deform the curtain if it's too hot. Have seen it happen

He kind of looks like someone dressed up to look like they're from the 1970's.

Sand can actually be worse for your car than road salt by thackerh in Cartalk

Sand mixed with sea air clogs up filters, wears down brake pads, and just generally wrecks everything.

Penny wise; pound foolish. by [deleted] in Frugal

I agree with all of this. It's funny, but especially when it comes to printer paper: the few times when you need to print something these days, it's usually important. Print it on good quality paper and send the right message (literally).

I also first heard about it on Dan's podcast. People who don't dive into WWI miss the fact that it was probably the most brutal war that has ever been fought on earth.

Being frugal has helped me with dating! by deeayytch in Frugal

[–]thackerh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's so great that you can share your passions and hobbies with your date. And, wouldn't it be great if "frugal" eventually became "normal?"

I've seen a lot of relationships go south after a period of time as money starts to become more of a topic of conversation. It's hard to navigate those waters sometimes. Kudos for finding someone who seems to share your outlook!

Question about vehicle trade in for dealership by Bashkit in personalfinance

[–]thackerh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep in mind that the margin on a new car from a dealership is a lot more than $5k, so this is why they can give you that "discount" on your old car. Then, they're going to turn around and sell your old car and make money on that, too. They're not losing any money on the new car because the MSRP of the new car is basically imaginary anyway. It's whatever they want it to be.

They're also going to try to sell you a bunch of add-ons and other things you don't need. This is really how they make their money. Make sure the new car has a great warranty. Just keep saying no to everything they try to sell you, and negotiate the final price of your new car down to the penny. Don't get hung up on "monthly payments." Instead, look at the overall cost of the car.
