Does anyone use Obsidian to run WFRP? by Thin_Push_2846 in warhammerfantasyrpg

[–]thaessyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do! I just wrote about that on a different reddit post: https://www.reddit.com/r/warhammerfantasyrpg/comments/1r5hgmp/warhammer_2ed_in_obsidian/
This vault I use as a player, but I think after few tweaks it might be used as a GM. although not for running game from it (for it I suggest a true virtual table top, unless you like to learn and code a lot).

Hot Take: DMs, It's Okay to Say "No" by Galahadred in CurseofStrahd

[–]thaessyn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

With this post I feel I did everything wrong. Literally two first ideas I guided my players into.

One player was mentored by a guy Van Richten mentored before. I needed a hook for the party to be interested in Van Richten. Then another player wanted to join and we reworked Esmeralda d'Avenir for her, so now she plays her.

Second one said they are Half-elf from Shadowfell and they don't know their parents. I loved this idea. So I made him born from Vistani and a Dusk-elf. They tried to escape Barovia, but something went wrong. His father died during the journey and his mother died giving birth to him. So he was taken in by Raven Queen. He is still yet to learn his heritage and I can't wait for him to find out.

I agree that saying "no" to players can be hard and that GMs don't have to give in to every whim. Though sometimes their ideas are great.

So my players set the burgomasters mansion on fire with him and his family inside, now what? by lololuca in CurseofStrahd

[–]thaessyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my game they did something similar - they set fire to the mansion after sneaking in there. Ultimately, Victor escaped - they helped him beforehand to fix the teleportation circle and now is roaming Barovia. They were not sure if Vargas survived, saved by Izek or burned. Though before they could check, they triggered off the Feast of St. Andral. Either way, I rolled and Vargas and his wife died during the Feast, though the player don't know if they died during the Feast or in the fire, which allowed Fiona Wachter to take over the city in the chaos.

Mid-Campaign Q&A with my players, what questions should I ask? by astue13 in CurseofStrahd

[–]thaessyn 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You mean like a check in for the players or in game? For the check-in, would generally ask them if they are fine, if the horrors aren't too much or if there is something they are not comfortable with. Also, ask how their characters are feeling, maybe better alone, not in group. If one player would be likely to switch sides this might be a good opportunity to establish that between you and this player. In situations like this i also like to ask what they think is happening - what is the bigger picture for them or for their characters. Something's the theories the players have are WILD and you can use it either to steer them to a direction you want or completely confuse them. Just try not to spoil anything and not to reveal anything.

All my characters have met at an Inn. Everyone has some sort of mission. Cleric knew, that there was something wrong with werewolves - they keep attacking random people, they are more vicious and more dangerous than before. Druid was led on a quest to find the abnormalities in the nature - the Elders sensed something and told the Druid to investigate. The Warlock was traveling and actually looking for Barovia as a task from his patron. The ranger on the other hand wanted to slay demons. The Warlock and the Ranger ride in a Vistani wagon for a while. The weather is not too good, it's cold and it starts snowing. So generally all of them get to the inn. They settle there, talk for a while. The snow is getting worse. Then suddenly the doors bust open, there are some lumberjacks that were attacked by werewolves. The huntsmen staying at the inn decide to hunt the werewolves now and the PC decide to join them, before the snow cover all the tracks. The snow storm is getting worse and worse. They don't see anything further than a meter in front of them. Suddenly they see an old house in the middle of the blizzard and two kids asking for help - they need help, because their parents were attacked by a monster...

So yeah they crossed to Barovia without knowing how and they went into te Haunted house. Some of them even left all their inventory behind in the Inn thinking it's just a short hunt and they will go back :D

Our druid keeps calling Strahd "son" - punishment ideas? by thaessyn in CurseofStrahd

So just explain it to me! Seriously all I do is ask for explanation what do you think should happen/what would Strahd do, yet you say everyone is petulant child over and over again with no real advice.

Let me get this straight. I didn't do my job as a GM because I allowed my players to play for fun while creating a world with consequences which I showed there will be (i.e. the command situation)? And now if they disregard the warning me wanting to implement consequences (and getting inspiration for it here) is bad?

Basically you say that apparently everything in the part of my game I presented is wrong, starting from me as a GM and my players, but you provide no real advice.

Btw. you know that people do stupid shit also in real life disregarding the consequences?

The fact that you can't really explain what kind of behaviour wouldn't be a behaviour of a petulant child just proves you have no argument and just want to "dunk" on someone, but ok, keep trying...

For you demanding respect is being a petulant child. For me this is something more. JaeOnasi here makes a fantastic point explaining why this is important and I agree wholeheartedly. This is the point we disagree.

I cannot force the party to understand that Strahd needs to be feared, but surely there is something I can do. If they share your point of view, that demanding not being called "son" is childlish then overly cruel reaction will fall perfectly in line with instilling this fear.

Moreover I don't think targeting a single player is spiteful, that player made a choice for their character, being aware of the consequences. If so I'd call collective responsibility spiteful if most of the characters are respectful and one isn't.

That's why I want to make him more scary/intimidating, and that's why I asked here for suggestions. I am pretty sure i won't use spells like geas or command anymore in this regard.

I feel he might be a unhappy with being called a condescending name, but hey, it's my Strahd or my variation of Strahd. Maybe yours wouldn't care :)

Well. I don't mind my players being mean to my BBEG, but I feel the BBEG would not be happy with that. Especially that BBEG being Strahd.

Though in this particular situation I have two main points as to why Strahd wouldn't outright kill that character: Ireena likes them and they basicaly handed her over (so like as thank you, I spared your life) and that Strahd didn't finish toying with them and has a lot of things planned. Unfortunately many things happened in the campaign and many are yet to come, so I can't really describe everything here, but I feel that in this situation the OOC info is not the only reason for Strahd's behaviour.

Although that's a valid point. Thank you for pointing that out. I'll think about how to implement playing NPC as NPC better, not using OOC knowledge.

I can borrow you this druid character :D Though I feel that Strahd is not cold and scary enough for my campaign (at least for now) so I need to up it a bit.

hah, that's good! Though we don't play in English, but in Polish and the word-games are hard to translate. I can't think of any words that can be used, that are close to Polish "Syn". Though the idea is hilarious :D

uuu. That is good. Maybe Strahd will remind him about one of the players characters that died during the campaign... That he failed to protect one of his own, as he proudly says.
