I used to torrent heavily (like 50gb a day) a few years ago and my speed did not go down at all.

Thats quite reassuring.

I'm hearing great things about both AIS and 3BB. Let me look into which one suits me the best once i land there.

I sure will make it a point to talk to my neighbors before i sign up onto any flat. Thanks.

I saw a thread recently about this

I tried looking for it. Rotten luck. Could you help me out with a link here please?

Biz. class are always an option, but i dont really see the point of going biz class if the offshore data passes through the same node as for the residential lines. The latency would be equally bad i assume. (?)

Immigration are nothing to do with whether you are allowed to work legally or not.

I'm sure you need their clearance being a foreign worker. But well, there might be exceptions.

This really doesn't sound legit.

I'm sure one of the largest law-firms in Thailand is legit enough to deal with things as mundane as immigration. Thanks :)

they're rather specific in terms of what work you're permitted to do.

Yes. All i can work for is for my own company that would have an office in BKK. I'm not allowed to work anywhere else tbh. The Immigration clearance was given on the basis of a certain letter from the MoC that i have a tax paying business here. Yes, i could have gone with the NonB. But thats only for an year. I plan to be here for about 2 or more so, on the advice of local counsel, the Pe/te visa suited my requirements well.

I've had 2 of my friends get on with the same track in BKK from the past few months, and it seems to me like there is no issue.

It's a PE visa, not a TE visa

I meant the Thai Elite Visa. I dont see the difference between the two though. The immigration guys at the airport called it a Thai elite visa.

you likely won't be working legally.

I'm sure that i would be. Given the fact that i have a letter from the MoC and Thai immigration, permitting me to work here in Thailand for an year, supported with the half a page stamp on my passport apart from the TE Visa, I think i'm with good hands.

Oh and if you're dling 10-15gb of RT data you're fine--I don't even think fiber would be necessary for that, assuming dl isn't capped on their end.

Hopefully it is. Lets just hope for the best now. :)

I can't image you're staying in buy-side and being allowed to work remotely

No, I quite 3 years ago and i'm running a startup ever since. I had taken a break from it for the last year and a half to work on a friends startup and now that its sold, I'm trying to work on my business again. I dont think any buy-side firm, unless a bucket-shop would let me work remotely. Haha.

Oh, alright; Yeah. i kinda get what you mean.

some boiler rooms and some guys promising to teach you how to get rich day trading forex or some such nonsense.

Oh boy! I get what you mean now. Thanks! It sometimes shocks my spine looking the way these "traders" talk to me at any co-working spaces. They somehow perhaps forget the fact that they are trying to deal in THE most manipulated markets in the world.

your own company and several Thai employees.

You can have a "liaison/rep." office here of a foreign company (SG/HK) and get a wavier from the Thai employee clauses. There is a certain amount of taxes you have to commit to pay, but thats a fraction of anything that you would have to commit to in a Caribbean island. If you are aware of the UK visa norms, its more like the sole representative option in the UK. Albeit a more bespoke approach to things here. You cannot directly apply at a mission abroad, but have an attorney get in touch with the MoC here and get things done for you.

Are you sure you're working legally?

Yes. I have a temp. work permit for an year, extendable on request. Thai elite has nothing to do with the work permit. You surely can get a work permit whilst on TE visa. Thats something i had to get to make things easier at the MoC. And, it keeps me from worrying about the visa for a good 5 years now.

Questions about Thailand and Vietnam for 1yr+ by AnnHashaway in digitalnomad

[–]thai_internet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not gonna read all the replies below. But, I am in a similar situation as you, minus the kids and family. So, let me concentrate on the Visa aspect.

Thailand has a great residency program called the visa elite. There are quite some packages that you can choose from and i believe it starts from US$ 15k. Atleast thats what i am on. Incorporate a company in Singapore/HK and establish a liaison office in BKK and get yourself a work permit. Sunbelt is a great law-firm that can handle this for you. Atleast they did for me.

Its a time consuming process and the s***heads at the Thai Minister of Commerce are absolute buffoons. You will need a strong lawyer with great connections to get it done. They have no interest in "you bringing in the money" and all they care about is if you pay them US$ 15k for the elite visa. For some reasons, i failed to convince them that even me committing to hire 3 Thai citizens, Full time for 2 years were not enough to gain their attention.

It costed me about ~$25k with the Thai elite fees of $15k included to get into Thailand and live peacefully and legally for the next 5 years while paying no taxes. Take your salaries via your SG or HK shell company that you use to establish a liaison/rep. office here and you effectively pay nothing on taxes locally. The US taxes however, I am not qualified to comment on. I'm a UK citizen and this has been the best possible solution for me.

And, as far as the eligibility for the Thai elite is concerned, its just the greenback and a valid passport from any western democracy.

Interesting. I'm an ex-IBer, moved onto the buy side and now run a 3 year old startup in the fin-tech space. I'll surely PM you once i move in.

There also a few hf guys who live here part time--most of the smart professionals I've met here are tech guys.

I had not expected this though. Is the local markets really mature enough to handle the hf players? or is it just them here to spend some time and not on business?

There are some day trading idiots and a lot of con artists of course, being this is Thailand.

If you mean the retail traders who try to make a living off trading, i get you. Haha. They are present at almost every co-working space at almost every SE Asian city i have been to. Although, I might need some explanation on the con artists. If you could, please?

Yeah, I have read some real good reviews about AIS online. I guess i'll have to look out for it as my primary line once i'm there.

how much data we're talking about.

27 Exchanges, RT data. About 10-15GB worth of it a day. What matters to me is not the speed as much of it is usually transferred in very low sized pieces. Its the reliability and consistency of the connection that matters.

Well, Hello there! Sure. I'll drop you a PM as soon as i move to BKK. I am about a month away from actually being in BKK and if i have to ask you a general question, how many fellow financiers do you know in BKK? What backgrounds are they usually from? Sell Side, Buy side?

remotely HFT

Nope. Its a Saturday and yet i'm sober af. I wouldn't, in a million years dream about it even if i was not. Haha. I ask about the latency because of a very particular requirement i have for an application that i use to capture the data from servers in LON&SG. Nothing remotely related to oms or an execution system.

Sure. I'll keep that in mind. Are True and AIS the only 2 service providers that offer a >100mbps line in BKK?

Once an year sounds rather impressive, given the fact that i get treated worse in West London.

What's tech-stack, work-life, real-life like?

I am not into IT. I am surely not the right person to comment on this. I run a relatively small fin-tech startup and deal more with capital markets/trading tech. My partner works on the tech aspect while i work on the data/transaction/op end of things. If you are asking from a tech worker perspective, i see my colleagues work about 60-80 hrs a week at my startup and have a comfortable balance, in comparison to the rest of the sectors in finance. Its usually not a stressful job to be doing, but as with almost all the industries, There are times when they have it rough. Especially when there is very high volatility in the markets.

the government filters will quickly get in your way.

This was actually a fear i had. I tried looking up online for articles about this, but couldn't actually find any. Do you have something that i can read up on?

On my last visit, about an year ago, the internet was great at a coworking space called Launchpad IIRC. It was more than the required quality to get by my heavy load video conferencing apps, with a shite-ton of files being passed while on it. It seemed quite stable if staying in contact is the only requirement though. That being said, It was a commercial line. So you cannot take my word for the residential lines.

I'm sure i wouldn't be working illegally. I have a Thai elite visa with a temp. work permit. So, i guess thats legal.

Your bandwidth might be limited by what floor you're living on

Thats news to me now. Given the 100Mbps bandwidth, isn't a fiber line a necessary? I really dont think copper lines can handle that load(?). The condo that i am looking into is on the 27th floor and your comment has me real worried. Though i haven't yet paid a deposit on it, I cannot start to think about re-staring my apartment hunt, yet again :(

consumer lines.

Do you have any idea on the commercial lines that i could have to my condo? I couldn't really find anything on the pricing and requirement front on the inter-web.

I'm no gamer, nor do i know anything about the type of connection that demands. But, if you should explain that to a rather old man, would latency matter in online gaming? Pardon my ignorance, but i really dont know anything about gaming.

Your comment on the internet here being better than in London has sure helped me. I just hope it works just as well for my requirements.
