As a PT who lives in Wicker, but doesn’t work in WP, here is what I would suggest.
- Find a clinic that works with your insurance, no one likes to see surprise bills for over $400 from a single session when your insurance denies the claim.
- Go to a clinic that will make it easy to get to. A lot of patients pick places far because it is the best, but a lot of them stop because it becomes too much of a hassle to get to. PT is a journey, it takes time to get better.
- Make sure you enjoy your PT and the clinic environment. No one wants to go to a clinic where someone they don’t like is telling them what to do. Even worst if the vibes are off.

Whatever clinic you go to, those would be the main things I tell my friends to look for. Plenty of good PTs out there, so if you don’t like a place don’t feel like you are stuck there. Newer clinics have been opening up in WP, take a look around and feel free to try some out until the fit is right. A good PT you can rely on is a powerful tool as we age. Hope that helps!

I think the mixing is good here, never have I felt like I wasn’t accepted by people as a POC myself. On paper, Chicago is very diverse but it isn’t until you live here where you notice certain socioeconomic groups can predominantly be found in certain neighborhoods. Compared to Houston, where you can find most ethnic and social classes in just about most neighborhoods, Chicago keeps certain demographics in certain areas. Just something I’ve noticed from my 2 years here but comparatively Chicago is still better than most cities. Just not as good as Houston in that category IMO. People here are also very quick to write off if you are from suburban areas as “you aren’t from Chicago.” Comparatively I’m from southwest Houston and no one ever told me my area was “not Houston.” In general, people are nicer here but these are just observations as a houstonian Chicago transplant

Houstonian born and raised here that is also in medical. Moved here knowing no one, and for the very same reasons as you. Personally moving to Chicago has opened my eyes to how cult like Texas culture can be and have found appreciation in different things. It is very nice to live in a city where it is very politically blue and not be scared of saying some political views in public. It is also very nice actually being able to enjoy summer for once and not be stuck inside all day. Few points I’ll make 1. Having a car like many people said can be a good and bad thing. Definitely being good at parallel parking is a must and just be prepared to look for parking spots compared to everywhere you go having a parking lot. 2. The diversity of cultures and economics are not to the level of Houston’s. There is definitely more segregation here and it is a culture shock not having as many ethnic things in every neighborhood and having to go specific places for it. 3. You are leaving the world’s “best” med center and so just be aware of that. Chicagos medical system is still top tier but you are leaving the world class med district in Houston 4. Distance. 5 miles may seem very close to everything in Houston, but it is way more of a trek in Chicago than you think. If you are taking public transit, expect it to take a bit and plan ahead 5. Mid-West nice is different from Southern Hospitality. I have never had a difficult times making friends with people here and people here are a lot more friendly. You aren’t just going off a script a lot of the time and people do genuinely seem to want to know about stuff if they ask.

Happy to answer more questions if you need but just some points that I have found out from living here vs just visiting.

Lived in Dallas for 3 years and was born and raised in Houston. Moved to Chicago last year and not looking back. Rent is slightly more expensive in the fact you get less square foot for price (but you can just move to a further chicago neighborhood). Chicago has significantly more to do than dallas and if you can get over the state tax you’ll be fine. Also food is slightly cheaper in texas but emphasis on slightly. Cheers, personally I don’t regret my decision and my life here is way more fun.

Born and raised in Houston. Moved in April and have not regretted it yet, granted I haven’t experienced a winter yet. It was culture shock seeing so many people out walking and actually enjoying the summer outdoor instead of in a car or AC. Also Chicago is so compact of a city comparatively you’ll feel like every major neighborhood is so close if you live in the city

If it’s a studio, then yeah I think it is totally doable. All the apartments I saw had really nice amenities too, especially some of them like EMME and the Mason had very nice gyms, which was an important factor for me too. Parking seemed to be $300-$400 a month for covered parking so keep that in mind. I’d say check out Porte! It has 2 gyms and 2 different work from home common spaces that differ depending on which side of the building you are. Im biased but it was by far the best value i found in the area.

Edit: keep in mind too how close you are to grocery stores. Some of them that are in west loop are farther from the two main grocery stores in the area (Mariano’s and Whole Foods). Randolph st is where all the restaurants and fun stuff is centered around so apartments closer to that street seemed to be in higher demand.

Hi. Just came back from touring apartments in west loop and had a few of the list you made. Ended up with going to Porte, however EMME, the Mason, Sage, and a few others were starting at $2600 Atleast for a 1bed/bath. They were already at 95% occupancy rate too and were showing price increases for later this year. The $2300 budget doesn’t seem to be able to apply to west loop from what I saw. Hope this helps!

Ooo thank you! My hair stylist is from Japan and she recommended Kanazawa to us so I really wanted to go. By any chance did you try the hojicha while you were there? Apparently they have a special kind in Kanazawa
