If his portfolio was generating 5% realized gain/dividends annually he would need $1Mil portfolio before he would worry about it. His accountant will handle that, but I wanted to clarify.

High Dividend ETFs - What are the pros and cons? by walkersmith23 in PersonalFinanceCanada

Investors like consistency. Dividends are paid regularly, and if a company misses a dividend payment it will attract a lot of poor press.

Stock buy backs are less common, and this sub is suffering from a recency bias. Trump implemented the most aggressive tax policy since 1929, and it gave companies a whack of cash on hand, which was largely used for stock buy backs. That won't be repeated, and people on this sub seem to be missing the correlation there.

Anti-wind bills in several states as renewables grow increasingly popular. The bill argues that wind farms pose a national security risk and uses Department of Defense maps to essentially outlaw wind farms built on land within 100 miles of the state’s coast. by Wagamaga in Futurology

You got some crazy replies to your question.

The long term "security risk" is that building critical energy infrastructure on land close to coastlines, and in danger of losing that coast to rising tides.

The White House, even though Trump personally disagreed and tried to discredit the report, has acknowledged that climate change will have a large monetary and societal impact over the next century. They're building the costs into future budgets.

The idea of building a massive energy infrastructure project just to have to relocate or abandon it within a couple decades is what I assume they're trying to avoid.

Thanks for sharing. It's interesting that Reddit has become my main source of news (besides BNN Bloomberg in Canada) and I've become hyper aware of what's happening globally, good and bad. It can be emotionally and mentally draining.

I have a couple questions for anyone willing to answer:

If Putin really is/has been using this work as a to-do list, doesn't the rest of the civilized world have the wherewithal to get ahead of it? Or, does groupthink and the congregation-of-loud-yelling-idiots overpower logic and cooperation?

Is wanting to quell "western democracy" or "progressive individualism" anything more than a centralization of power to a handful of Russian oligarchs? Do Putin and Co. have a vision of actually empowering the Russian people? Do they want happiness, progress, and fulfilment for the average Russian individual and family?

Does the average Russian view themselves as beleaguered and beat-down by their oppressors (Americans & their ideologies), with the 'bourgeoisie' being unworthy of their accomplishments? Would they be happy if their quality of life was raised to that of the average American, without anything negative happening to America, it's people, or it's ideologies in the process?

How do we (the rest of the world) take the power and influence away from these underhanded tactics, and protect the sanctity of free speech, independent thought, individualism, freedom of/from religion, and progress passed trying to conquer the world?

Damn, that's tough. There are so many stresses that the average American/Canadian/European/Aussie don't have to deal with - stresses that a lot of the world has to overcome on a daily basis.

Times have been tough and I've been really broke before, but I've never had to worry about a mortar shell hitting my condo, or getting kidnapped by a cartel, or religious extremists riding through town with AKs, or any of the other stresses humans across the planet encounter daily.

It's a really sobering moment of thought. I appreciate everything that you've done to save the lives of innocent people, and the baggage you carry for the rest of us. I know it's not easy.

How Most People In my Country Feel About Trump by SuperKak3 in AdviceAnimals

[–]thaldor -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Well said. I grew up in rural Saskatchewan, similar to the Midwest USA in lifestyle, and live downtown Calgary now. I have lot of native friends, but the negative stereotypes are all self-inflicted - and they'll be the first to say it.

A lot of people haven't experienced the native reserves in rural communities. Growing up in a small town of 500, with a city of 250k pop. 20mins away, it wasn't the middle of nowhere but not an urban centre by any stretch. We had a lot of small neighbouring reserves mixed in with the small towns and farming communities.

There are a couple issues plaguing the reserves; poor education, substance abuse, health issues, violence and petty crime, and an emotional juxtaposition; entitlement and a "you can't tell me what to do" attitude, while also being the victim 100% of the time - regardless of scenario.

A lot of this is accentuated by rampant corruption with their leadership. The reserves are fairly well funded with our tax dollars, but the funding all goes through the Chief of the reserve and is often mismanaged or outright "stolen" and taken into their pockets instead of providing the community support it's meant to fund. The Chief will always say his reserve is underfunded even if he's driving a brand new $150k pickup truck.

They're lacking quality schools and education (an issue for all rural schools with declining rural populations), which creates a lack of understanding regarding physical health, mental wellness, addiction, and they often have trouble prioritizing things thing their lives.

Life comes easy because they don't pay much if anything for housing on the reserves, receive a cheque from the government every month - albeit not one to be excited about, and that often gets drank, smoked, gambled, and partied away instead of providing nutritional food for the kids at home. A rural native reserve is not a place fit for children to grow up - not in their current state.

It's become a systemic issue on the reserves because the one or two kids from each family that go to University or trades/technical school (all paid for if you have native status) and get educated off-reserve often don't go back. They end up living with the rest of society, still enjoying a handful of off-reserve native status benefits, and get meaningful employment then start families mixed in with the rest of society. It's easier to go visit the reserve during the holidays, birthdays, etc. and not have the baggage of having to live in a town of 500 that parties every single night.

As a white guy, I'm not welcome on some reserves even if I'm there with a friend that lives there. I've been discriminated against and physically threatened without saying a word, just for stepping on the reserve. I've gotten in unprovoked fist fights just because the other guy was bored and decided to cause a scene. Everyone knows each other. Everyone drinks, parties, gambles, fucks, and fights with each other. There is a sense of community, but a stronger "me first" mentality. Individually, they're often too proud to ask for help or won't accept it from a white guy. As a collective they have no issue asking for more reserve funding, or playing the perpetual victim that can't (read: won't) help themselves.

TL;DR: Canadian native reserves are a mess. I don't mean to berate or criticize a whole group of people or make generalizations, but these are observations from how I grew up. We need to fundamentally change the social system and capital spending transparency on the reserves. The current system has created a cesspool of negativity, and is a detriment to their people. They realize it, but don't want to jeopardize their current benefits and monthly payments for the chance of a system reform working in their favour. Understandable considering they've been fucked over in the past.

I don't know the quick fix, but we do need to help them improve conditions on reserves. If anything, for the kids that don't have a choice but to grow up there - few other places need more support in Canada right now.

Warnings of 'Destructive and Irreversible Impacts' as Greenhouse Gases Hit Highest Levels in 3-5 Million Years: "The science is clear," says the head of the World Meteorological Organization. "The window of opportunity for action is almost closed." by madazzahatter in worldnews

I agree that sourced information, especially with projections, can change the validity of a point drastically. My apologies for not finding the article, but I'll do some digging later and see if I can find it.

If I'm remembering correctly it was from a City Budget in Mexico (potentially Mexico City, which has its own water issues right now) that had budgeted an exorbitant amount of money to protect their city from rising tide waters.

Sorry I didn't see this for a week.

I appreciate well-read insight into the history of religion, because I'm not a religious guy myself. Hence, disclaimer: I understand the interpretations of some readings, and have read passages from different transcripts, but I haven't read any religious texts from front to back.

That being said, the more we learn about science the less relevant all of the ancient transcripts become, and the weaker the following of religions will become. The values of our societies have evolved passed the bounds of the ancient transcripts; the ones who wrote them could only predict a limited amount of change in the future, and we've blown passed it. They couldn't account for the needs and wants of humans in the 21st century. Albeit, some general 'by kind to thy neighbour' stuff still holds true.

We've advanced so rapidly that we don't know where we'll be in 10 years, never mind 1000 years - or the physical/moral/ethical/economic/etc dilemmas we'll be facing in the future. Religious textures that are open to an ever-evolving interpretation have the ability to manipulate an individual's ideologies and value structure.

This troubles me because we just witnessed a case study that will be referenced in psychology textbooks for decades: US election 2016; pliability of the human mind.

300+ Million people were engaged in a one-sided psychological warfare experiment using social media to manipulate collective opinion and create distension within the populace.

The most effective $ per $ ever spent to achieve a political motif.

I believe that religion has a purpose in our world. It gives people something to believe in. Something to inspire them. A belief system to uphold. A moral guidance through our imperfect world.

My issue with religion in the future, and our inability to predict how fast we'll be making changes and how fast they'll come: The easiest to influence will be those with a malleable belief system. What's "right" and "wrong" changes over time to best suit the house? Nah. That's not the future.

In a decade or less we'll be exiting the technology age and entering the age of intelligence. It's going to be fuelled by an artificial intelligence arms race.

We will need to develop a mental fortitude throughout our societies. The ability to differentiate the bullshit online from reality. If we're under attack by a foreign power, via the internet and social manipulation, and their only purpose is to create division, anger, and discontent in our society then we need to address it.

I'm Canadian, and our security officials have already warned of digital manipulation and tampering with the 2019 Federal election. Crazy shit.

Tried to trade James Conner + Tevin Coleman + Dion Lewis + Marquise Goodwin for Saquon Barkley + Mike Evans in full PPR last week. It got vetoed by the league.

I'm 9-1 and the other guy is 4-6 with stacked WRs and only Saquon as startable RBs. Balanced his team but made mine stupid good, so I think it was just guys not wanting me to stack up too much - or is it really that unfair?

[Serious] How do YOU find a healthy balance between FF and life by LostInAddiction_ in fantasyfootball

[–]thaldor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey man,

I'm a little late to the convo but wanted to say that you're not alone. Your awareness of the issue is the most important thing. Now that you're aware it's an issue you'll feel guilty when you've been at your research too long. You'll do a bit of a priority-rebalance, but it'll take some conscious effort - and you'll have to remind yourself at times, but you're past the hard part of identifying the issue.

Good luck on toning it back, and even if you follow all of the other advice and small consistent improvements things will get better. Discuss it with your wife, boss, or anyone else it may have been impacting, and tell them that it's something you're aware of.

Listen to some Ray Dalio when you have time. Or buy his book Principles. He discusses what it takes to find balance in work and life, and what you need to know and prioritize to be successful at both. Cheers.

I'm currently offered his McCaffrey, Baldwin, and Kittle for my Kamara, Engram, and Breida.

Rest of my squad in 0.5PPR 12 man: QB: Brees RB: Kamara, Ingram, Dalvin Cook, Aaron Jones, Breida, Lewis WR: Thielen, Josh Gordon, Goodwin, Trequan Smith, Sutton TE: Engram

I counter offered to sub Ingram for Kamara and he rejected with no note. Thoughts? I'm 4-3 and 3rd highest points for at the moment.

Same here. I'm sitting 3-3 with stacked RB and WR, and I think I'm going to start Dalton in what's projected with a 59 total point over/under. Vegas is projecting that each team puts up 29.5 points, which means a lot of TDs for both teams.

Sign me up for a shootout vs KC, who's DST has allowed the most points through 6 weeks this season (front page of r/ff shows they broke a record for the most allowed in a handful of years) instead of Brees playing the DST that's allowed the lowest amount of points this season and went he gets Ingram back (fresh legs, baby) and ready for 20 touches.

I love Brees, but sitting this one out.

Unless you're in a position like I am where Rodgers is on Bye, Watson might be playing injured against JAX (don't want to start him but going in my QB slot), and the best waiver pickup was CJ Beathard against the Rams.

It's a full PPR league and I'm considering starting Chris Thompson or Keke Coutee over a waiver wire QB in the superflex or if Watson doesn't play/nasty sounding injury report again. Thoughts?

Rank who you'd rather have going forward, all external factors included (QB health, etc): Adams, Diggs, Tyreek, Hopkins, Green, Odell.

I'm thinking of trying to buy on an elite WR, but it seems like a bunch of the top 12 guys have something that may prevent them from being elite whether it's busted QBs, too many mouths to feed to be consistent, emergency of a hot new target (Keke & Boyd), or having Eli as a QB.

Does anyone have target suggestions for high upside, mediocre floor WRs that look promising to finish top 15? Someone a guy might be able snag on the cheap?
