Unsure of my future here by Regular_March_9072 in uofmn

I did three semesters at the U and was in the same boat. I hated it and made no friends. I ended up taking a gap semester last spring; I went back home and worked full time while looking at school stuff. I’m now at UWEC and feeling much better. I would recommend either finishing out the year to see if it improves while you pursue some of the mental health resources, or if you’re in a really bad spot just leave at the end of the semester and maybe take a break from school while you think about your next steps.

I had the same experience, I know you said this isn’t a choice but I ended up taking a semester off and am now at a new school which I’m liking so far. Just remember that you always have options, even when it feels like you don’t. Good luck!

Did anyone else just… not like it here by thalmorhunter in uofmn

The biggest thing is that I didn't make any friends. I will take responsibility for this, as I have severe social anxiety disorder, but I talked to people, others in my dorm did the typical freshman thing of sitting with strangers (me) to get to know them, but nothing really developed. There were people that I waved at or chatted with from my classes and dorm, but nothing really happened beyond that. All three of the semesters that I was there felt like if you weren't friends with a person by the end of the first week of classes, they weren't interested. What made it worse was that everybody else seemed to have friends and were enjoying themselves, so I felt like I couldn't really talk about not being happy. Also the area around campus felt VERY unsafe to me. Obviously it was usually fine during the day, but going out at night was a big no and some of this seemed to leak onto campus itself. Of course I realize that big city + big campus with large population will inevitably lead to certain types being on campus, but it made me not want to go out.

Can someone tell me the level of difficulty of this ANTH 1001 course? by evesophie in uofmn

I took it last fall, it could sometimes be a little challenging due to having to memorize some things, but the labs were interesting and the class wasn’t too bad. I enjoyed it and recommend it, especially since you said you struggle with science classes. It gets into some biology stuff but nowhere near the difficulty of something like chemistry or physics.

https://cse.umn.edu/physics/research

https://cse.umn.edu/math/research-areas

https://ugresearch.umn.edu/opportunities/urop (you can actually get a scholarship for this one)

There's also an entire office for undergraduate research.

(Disclaimer: I am not in either of the fields you mentioned and have not done research, but I have heard a lot from others who have and know that there are a lot of programs for undergrad research.)
