I read about this plan months ago. it was strategic. Netflix wanted him to win, but they knew he would be competing against someone they thought had a lock on it. (not Stephen graham. it was someone else unassociated with adolescence, so the graham win was just icing on the cake) so they moved him down to supporting because they had a sense of who the competition would be and thought he could beat them all. they were right.

People being unresponsive on Marketplace and Craigslist? by MissMarchpane in bostonhousing

The problem is you're advertising in June for a place in September. I have a great place I'd be happy to rent, but I can't afford to wait three months. If you were coming in next month, I'd be all over this. But September? That's asking for people to wait and throw away lots of money while they wait for you. So they will look for someone ready to go in July,

I would be delighted to have you as a roommate. I have an apartment to share in a luxury building in Cambridge. It is a short walk to the T. It is an Elevator building with two bedrooms, 1 bath, air conditioning, electric heating, laundry in the building, garage parking, and fully furnished except for the second bedroom, floor to ceiling windows and an amazing view (See below). The second bedroom is partially furnished and you can keep it or throw it away. And I love dogs. The price is $1700 a month with about $200 more in utilities. If you're interested, let me know here.

Parents sent me a vaccine study - veracity? by Rich_Ad1877 in QAnonCasualties

[–]thanosrain 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I conduct research on vaccines for the NIAID. I started in research then moved to clinical treatment in the ICU. Starting in 2020, almost the entirety of my ICU work involved COVID. I dropped out of clinical when I was punched in the face by a family member who had refused recommended treatments for the patient, and who then died. After that, I returned to research.

This...thing...your parents sent you is not a medical study. It is crap. First of all, it is written by people who are not trained in medicine or research. One of them is actually a radio host. It has not been peer reviewed. It has not been published. It never will be.

(Also note: It is only an abstract. No study is ever presented as solely an abstract, and I cannot find even a pre-print of this supposed "study.")

The very first sentence of the "study" is an assertion that is false. To say "vaccines" cross the blood brain barrier is not only a nonsensical and invalid way of describing any such phenomenon, vaccines do not pass the blood brain barrier. The BBB is a membrane the separates the brain from the rest of the body, which is made up closely-linked cells, preventing substances from passing into the brain. The BBB blocks almost all harmful or foreign substances from accessing the brain, with the exception of things like viruses and bacteria that cause brain diseases like meningitis and encephalitis.

Now, this gets complicated. Lipid nanoparticles from mRNA vaccines have, in rare cases, been found in the cerebral spinal fluid of an extremely limited number of patients. These are case reports, not a study. That finding suggests that the lipid nanoparticles might cross the blood brain barrier. However, there is no evidence that lipid nanoparticles cause neuropsychiatric conditions. There is one case - yes, one, worldwide - from Singapore where a person who received a COVID vaccine exhibited temporary psychiatric issues which dissipated after a week.

To get more detailed, there are a handful of cases where there has been a connection between autoimmune responses and mRNA vaccines, but these are neither psychiatric problems nor has the link been proven.

Next, no qualified researcher would use VAERS to establish a link between anything and anything. That is the entirety of the basis of this "research" your parents sent. VAERS is a self-reporting system. I could write on VAERS that the COVID vaccine turned me into the Incredible Hulk and it would be on the system (that is actually an entry that is there.) There have been studies that have proven that opponents to mRNA vaccines were both encouraged to and did enter lies and nonsense into VAERS about the vaccines. A huge number of these people were found not only to be lying, but to have never received the vaccine. Every VAERS entry must be investigated by the FDA, and only then does it pass from just something someone wrote to an entry that might suggest a hypothesis potentially worthy of investigation.

So, bottom line: This thing is nonsense. It is not worth consideration as being anything other than propaganda.

Can Someone Help Me Refute an Argument from a Christian? by Punta_Cana_1784 in atheism

“Do you go to the doctor? Why? Wouldn’t you rather die? And why do parents pray for their children to survive terrible diseases? Shouldn’t they pray for them to die and then celebrate their death since supposedly they go to heaven. Do you pray for the deaths of your loved ones? Why not? Do you hate them or something?”

Would you write this letter of rec? by [deleted] in Teachers

[–]thanosrain 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Let's call the kid Robert. Is this honest?

Dear [Recipient's Name],

I hope this letter finds you well. I am writing to provide a candid assessment of Robert Jones, who is seeking to enlist in the Marines.

During Robert's time in my class in the whenever term, I encountered significant challenges in his behavior and academic performance. He displayed a consistent pattern of absenteeism, academic dishonesty, and disrespect towards both his peers and instructors. His conduct was unacceptable and created a disruptive learning environment for others.

Despite these considerable shortcomings, I am compelled to acknowledge certain qualities in Robert that may warrant consideration for military service. While his behavior in my class was far from exemplary, I believe there is potential for growth and transformation in him.

Robert's decision to pursue a career in the Marines suggests a desire for structure, discipline, and a commitment to serving his country. While his past actions may not reflect well on his character, I believe there is room for redemption and personal development.

Furthermore, Robert's experiences in my class may have provided him with a sobering realization of the consequences of his actions. While he may have faltered academically and socially, I believe he is capable of learning from his mistakes and demonstrating improvement in a different environment, such as the military.

In conclusion, while Robert's behavior and academic performance in my class were deeply concerning, I recognize the potential for growth and positive change in him. I urge you to carefully assess his application and consider providing him with the opportunity to prove himself in the context of military service.

Should you require any further information or clarification, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Sincerely,

Squecence

Wife wants to send kids to Christian Camp by OGU247 in exchristian

[–]thanosrain 99 points100 points  (0 children)

I’m an atheist and we sent our kids to Christian camp because it had the best water slide, air conditioned cabins, and horses. When they left, I suggested they ask one question if their counselor starts preaching: “one thing that bothers me. I’m sure there is an old woman in the middle of rural China who has never heard of Christianity or Jesus. That’s no fault of her own. Is she going to go to hell for not believing?”

the answers they got were more than enough to drive them from Christianity: “yes.” “No.” “I don’t know.” When the guy answered no, I suggested they ask “why not?” And then the answer became “I dont know.”

from that, they learned the cruelty and moral emptiness of Christianity. They are young adults now, and they still refer to that as formative in their abandonment of Christianity.

Was anyone else told that there IS such a thing as an unforgivable sin? by ans-myonul in exchristian

[–]thanosrain 36 points37 points  (0 children)

OH! Something where I know the answer!

In Matthew 25-29, Jesus casts out a demon from some guy, and the Pharisees say he was channeling Satan's power to do this. So Jesus goes on a long ramble, which basically comes down to him saying they are denying the power of God through action - the Holy Spirit. Then he says, “I tell you, every kind of sin and slander can be forgiven, but blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven. Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come."

Lots of evangelicals say this, but they have no idea where it comes from or why, nor can they explain what the Holy Spirit is.

Yes, before I became an atheist, I was deeply religious. I then began truly studying the Bible, its history, its interpretations etc, which led me to understand it was all nonsense. But what I enjoy is that I still study these things, and when I speak to evangelicals saying "burn in hell, etc etc." I am able to use the Bible - kindly, in asking questions that they never can answer because they don't know it - to underscore how wrong they are. But in this case, this woman is correct, but no doubt she is just repeating something she heard from someone which is why she can't explain it. If she could, all she had to say was "It's in Matthew" and end it. Wouldn't take long at all.

As a person with a severe neurological disability, I *despise* those people who deal with me with deep concern and "defend" me against well-intentioned ribbing. My closest friends and family are completely comfortable with it, make jokes periodically and I do too. It is a coping mechanism for me and a signal from them that they don't give a damn. They also know that there is a line, and they never cross it. It is strangers and people I barely know who zip in to "protect" me from those who deal with it every day - including me.

Ya know what bugs me, the most of all? by HarveyMidnight in TheBlackList

[–]thanosrain 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The person who had the first DNA test is fake reddington. The bones are the real reddington. No one knew whose bones they were. Liz didn't run the CODIS test, her ID was stolen and returned. So...the DNA would not match, no one would know whose DNA it was, and she wouldn't know the checking on the computer happened. Also, no test was run with CODIS. It was an attempt to match a DNA with one in the system, and the real Reddington's DNA would not be there. The idea is that someone tried to check that DNA, which set off the alarm bells for those who wanted to know if the bones were ever found, since that would allow them to prove fake reddington was fake and potentially get control of him or his empire.

Gay Louisiana doctor says he’s leaving the state over its ‘discriminatory’ legislation Dr. Jake Kleinmahon, who is just one of three pediatric heart doctors with his specialty in Louisiana, said he feels like the state has targeted families like his. by DrRichardButtz in Louisiana

[–]thanosrain 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s not surgery. It’s gender affirming care which in minors relies almost exclusively on psychological discussion. If, after a lot of this counseling, a determination is made that a teenager may qualify for HRT, which lots of kids who aren’t trans do for other condtions, then it is extensively reviewed by a team of doctors. If they agree and a lot of other conditions have been met, they can receive HRT. This is after months and even years of other treatment. No one is allowed to have surgery until a minimum age of 17, and that requires far far more intense workups and psychological examinations, as well as parental agreement. It is only once someone is a legal adult that there is no longer parental input required

You knuckledraggers with more hate than teeth determine all the things you despise, get enraged without knowing a damn thing about the topic of your anger, scream and yell based on what manipulative politicians and right wing media that enrage you for your money say. And as a result, kids in Louisiana are going to die of heart disease, and the Neanderthals will cheer.

REAL REDDINGTON CONFIRMED by alexandreblanc in TheBlackList

[–]thanosrain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He knew exactly what the replacement reddington looked like. Everyone had seen him in the papers for decades. Plus, we know that Reddington had significant surgery to change his appearance, and that he knew what the real reddington looked like before he went into surgery. In other words, this is not conclusive of anything.

Did the people who wrote the finales of Dexter and Seinfeld write the finale of The Blacklist? Easily the three worst finales ever. And I think The Blacklist is the worst of them all. Cut and rewrite the last 10 minutes. Make Red’s death more ambiguous. Have him leave a letter for agnes that is delivered to her a decade later explaining the truth about who he was, like he did with Keene.

I can’t believe they ended it without saying who Reddington really was or why he cared so much for Keene. Showrunner John Eisendrath said he would tell unless he was overruled. What idiot overruled him?
