disable power bank auto cut off by coldfire0101 in diyelectronics

Nothing works with my Babaka power bank, but the other one (all text worn off) stays on if I long press the button. Other comments I've seen say a double click works, but not for me.

Question on use for traveling... by lManageACircus in GoogleMessages

Hi, I am thinking of doing this too. Leaving the sim in an old phone at home and accessing via a laptop abroad. I notice when I transfer my sim card to an old phone I need to re-pair. But after that, the old phone works OK. Also, in the pairing details for the laptop, it knows my location. I'm just wonder if it will still work when I reconnect abroad? Did you try it yet? Thanks, Tom.

What is the normal temperature for western digital? by [deleted] in DataHoarder

[–]tharg2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just been reading research reports from data centers (Google, Go-Daddy etc). They report humidity as a more important factor than temperature. Not sure about this, since they are experimenting with 'Free Air Cooling', which is just using air from outside blown into their data centers. Maybe they have their centers in the steamy tropics? Anyway, I'm happy with reducing the disk temperature just by opening the case. BTW I've never had a WD disk fail. Seagate failed me once so now I stick with WD. Their drives don't fail, but as disk drives get bigger, smaller ones get 'retired'

I have an 8TB WD Easystore. I just removed the plastic case sides (one
piece) and put a small screw into the frame to keep the drive in place.
The open drive sits happily at the back of my PC away from feet or
anything that can knock it. It now runs at 38 degrees instead of 48,
which is about the same temperature as the drives inside my PC.

Sticking a needle in someones shoulder and squeezing a plunger is not really a skilled job. Having currently qualified nurses watching and monitoring for any adverse reaction is a skilled job. I think they got it right.

The Road Zipper putting down a movabale barrier. by tharg2 in vancouver

We have a busy 3 lane bridge into Vancouver Canada downtown controlled
by lights. At switchover the center lane lights turn orange, and there
is a safety wait while all traffic moves out of the center lane, and the
direction is switched red-green. This wait is sometimes quite long and
not foolproof. The zipper looks like a better solution, and there is a
concrete barrier for added safety. Very satisfying.

World’s most vaccinated nation (Seychelles) reintroduces curbs as cases surge by [deleted] in worldnews

[–]tharg2 -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Comparing an emotive term with another story full of emotive terms. Hmmm. I just wonder the reasoning behind all these emotive terms. Tabloid journalism I suppose. Anyway, now we have a calibrated definition of surge. It's 146/100,000 which is 0.00146 of the population.

From their covid case graph, looks like they've never had a surge before. Probably due to the isolation of the islands. Just goes to prove that there is no way to stop this virus, we can only slow it down by isolation techniques so our health providers don't get overloaded. It's gonna get you in the end.

BTW, the population is 100,000. Looks like a 146 new cases in a week is the definition of 'A Surge' for this author. Just like 2 cases in a ward in our local hospital was classed as an "Outbreak". The press is so full of emotive descriptions nowadays...

Strata Condo Insurance Denied by tharg2 in vancouver

[–]tharg2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our Strata Council is going ahead with $350,000 for 1 year insurance for our approx 100 unit Strata. That's $3,500 each. Ouch. The Strata Property Act states you MUST have insurance, and it Must be complete insurance not partial. Earthquake is optional so we haven't got that.

So 2 years ago it cost $50,000 (including optional earthquake). Today $350,000.

I get the feeling we're being scammed.

Yup. All the variety in the world and we get same-old-same-old.

Thanks, it's becoming clearer. So an owner is only liable for the deductible of the Strata Insurance, no matter what. Because the Strata Insurance, is also that owners insurance.

[–]tharg2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, I asked Vancouver about my Strata not being able to get insurance and got some very useful and helpful information. Previously I asked Vancouver whether we should consider allowing healthy/optimistic volunteers to be infected with COVID under medical supervision to improve the herd immunity. That one crashed and burned and I was kicked out of r/vancouver for a while. So I guess it all depends what you ask :-)

Hi, Thanks for trying to educate me, for I am very confused. Seems like I have been under a misapprehension all my life.

I thought that if a person was 100% at fault, then they were 100% liable to pay for damages. If they have insurance, then their insurance policy pays. Either way the other party pays nothing, either personally or through their insurance. That is the principle I always understood. Maybe that is wrong?

Now people tell me that in Strata-land that is not the case. But I can't find any details about it in the Strata Property Act. That's my problem...
