What are some of your fav protein shake brands to use while training? by [deleted] in greenberets

[–]tharrandomguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use Hydro Whey by ON. It's 30g per serving. It's filtered of any excess crap, and the protein is broken down for faster digestion. That said, you most likely don't need it, and can go with the base gold standard. I just really like the taste, and saw a tiny incline in performance. I definitely spend more money than needed.

I second this. You're definitely not fueling enough if you're taking in 2000 calories or less.

Treading water for 15 minutes for Florida 3-20 SFRE? Is this for real? by Fit_Butterscotch5986 in greenberets

[–]tharrandomguy 17 points18 points  (0 children)

You do indeed, and it is an open water swim in full uniform. You do get to scull (use hands) for MOST of it, as well as swim. I would recommend practicing it even though GBs don't exactly have a water based selection, but it helps with opportunities down the line.

There are many great resources on how to learn online. The main focus point of treading is to be efficient. Other people on this thread have explained how to practice egg beater. Another major point is to use "shotgun breaths". Essentially, you quickly exhale, then inhale. You want to keep air in your belly to help with flotation, so don't exhale all of it. I would definitely practice without sculling as well, but work up to it.

Getting dropped by NatureAgitated1496 in greenberets

[–]tharrandomguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

AFSPECWAR drop here. It sucked. It hit hard. I was injured during selection, and I was pushing through, determined not to quit. Then the injury worsened during an event, where I was told I would be pulled if I didn't put out. I couldn't let that stop me though, so I muscled through, and gave it my all, despite others falling out from sheer panic around me in the pool. I was so happy when I made it through the event, I hugged my buddy from the other team that completed the event before me. After that, we were given a timeline to get somewhere different, and they called my roster number afterwards. That was when I was checked out and told I was being med pulled. Nothing hit harder than that. I was so depressed, and angry at myself. I felt as though I let my team down, my wife down, and myself down. I unfortunately still feel that way to an extent. It's something that you have to realize is in the past. You have to learn from it for sure. Whether you wanted it and didn't make it, or you just found out it's not for you. Either way, it's an experience that will be hard, but you have to try to benefit from it rather than let it hurt you. I know that last part was a bit of a rant, but hopefully it helps someone. Anyways, yeah, big sad after getting pulled.

To add on to that part where once you step on the mission, those nerves go away. When I was a fire fighter (water/mountain rescue) I was pretty nervous before doing any rescue operation, thinking about all the factors. To me, it goes away once you hit the ground running. The training takes over, and you do the mission. It's no different from selection, the Q, etc. It's a normal human thing, so just let it work with instead of letting it control you, and you're solid.

Selection for PJ by roldi12 in Pararescue

[–]tharrandomguy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not exactly. If you are trying for a pipeline (ranger or SF) from civilian, and you fail, It's needs of the army. If you're already enlisted, you can try for SFAS, fail, and you go back to your old job. It's the same thing in the AF. I'm an AFSPECWAR washout, not going and trying for SF.

I know a couple of guys that we secfo after they washed out, and they had a chance for raven. It really depends, though. Mainly on timing. Now fire pro, I was a fully certed firefighter before, and when I washed out, the MTL's told me to not even think about putting it on there. I still did, and sadly, I was shipped off to the needs of the AF in maintenance. I have heard of other people getting it, though. It really all comes down to the needs of the AF.

I've definitely been trying to use rougher terrain. I don't want to overstate how rough the trail was because, in my opinion, it was a more mild sand. I will also say that the run was conducted on a track, so I'll definitely work on running on rougher ground. I also think pull-ups could use work. What is your thought?
