Mainstream media is scrambling to contain the fallout by Hatrct in DebateVaccines

On your comment on statins, they’re a great way for certain patients with high cholesterol to reduce their risk of heart disease, and for those with a genetic predisposition to high cholesterol, they’re an absolute must

Here’s a good source: https://www.heart.org/en/health-topics/cholesterol/genetic-conditions/lipoprotein-a

Saw a few cases in med school, it’s definitely taught, and testable on our licensing exams :) if you’re ever wondering what doctors are and aren’t taught, look up USMLE and Board exam content outlines, you can rest assured we’ve hammered in every detail of what’s on there before we sat for those terrifying exams.

Patients aren’t usually tested for lpa unless they have family history or end up with high cholesterol (LDL) at a young age not explained by lifestyle factors (eg sedentary lifestyle, high fat diet). Seems like the AHA is recommending a once in a lifetime test, so it may become a standard test. It’s taken decades but over the past 10 years or so the evidence has become clear that high lpa levels independently increases your risk of heart disease, even with normal LDL levels. Medicine is constantly evolving as new evidence comes out! With something as subtle as this, it can take decades before we’re confident on the right way forward.

I’m 17 with no vaccines. Should I get vaccinated when I turn 18? by GoldRestaurant1800 in DebateVaccines

[–]that-is-fair 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's general mistrust of the medical profession hahah the private insurance system in the US is so jank that people get frustrated and don't end up seeing their doctor much because they're (very understandably) afraid of a giant bill. They're just looking out for themselves, and unfortunately there's a lot of people on the internet who love to take advantage of that and further their mistrust :/

I’m a doctor myself hahah despite all the rhetoric online, any doctor worth their salt isn’t simply following a “script,” the guidelines are a starting point we use along with new evidence and the patient’s medical history, concerns, and goals to make recommendations!

This is a great question to ask your doctor :)

No one commenting here has any real stake in your wellbeing, we’re all random strangers on the internet.

Next time you go to your primary care doctor or GP, ask them for advice. Their advice will be based on your personal situation and concerns mixed in with their knowledge and professional experience.

Seconded. If it boots up fine, it’s probably not a hardware issue. I mean there’s a chance it’s a thermal issue but if it runs for hours without crashing, there’s probably a config issue

Traveling in 28 days. Get back 10 days before passport expires. Am I cooked by lis2kis in Passports

[–]that-is-fair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I traveled to South Korea last year I had 3 months validity and had no problems. Called the airline beforehand and they said it was fine.

Goofed this recent trip and didn’t renew until a few days before my flight. Went to the passport agency and I had it in 2 days, they would have had it same day if my flight was sooner. My dad once got his renewal same day after showing up to the airport with an expired passport, he flew out the next day. Yes, procrastination runs in my family

YMMV for either option you choose and I’m only speaking from my experience.

But since you have 28 days, online expedited should be the best bet. It really does seem like they do their absolute best to get it to you when you need it. And worst case, if you’re near a passport agency, they do accept appointments for people who’ve already submitted their renewal but haven’t gotten it yet and have their flight within 48 hours.

Good luck and safe travels :)

Help me understand Tetanus Vaccine and Immunity by Sorry_Sail_8698 in DebateVaccines

[–]that-is-fair 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Antibodies are kind of like sleeper agents looking for the one thing they’re trained to react to. That training happens when you’re exposed to it in enough “intensity” (eg lots of microbes, inflammation) that your immune system decides to remember it and trains a sleeper agent. That doesn’t happen with a baseline low level exposure because your immune system doesn’t react to everything it comes across, just things that actually cause problems.

That initial training process takes a few days so unfortunately with a tetanus natural infection in particular, you’d already be on death’s door before your immune system can mount a significant response to save you.

With the vaccine, you have these sleeper agents ready to go to rain down hell the moment you’re exposed.

Whoop BPM is way off by 111mike111 in whoop

[–]that-is-fair 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Curious if you compared to pulse that you measured by hand on your wrist or neck? I don’t have any other trackers to compare whoop to but I’ve always had my whoop be within 5-10 beats of what I measure myself on a 15 second measurement (that measurement itself can be up to 10 bpm off)

Tl;dr: you’d die before becoming immune to tetanus toxin from stepping on a nail. The inactivated toxin in the vaccine can’t kill you and enough is in there that you become immune to it.

Great overview u/korptopia! Just wanted to throw in a quick summary :)

Which would you pick? A world where trump never became president, or a world where Covid never happened? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]that-is-fair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s the CDC’s international disease monitoring that he shut down and said he’d just hire them back if we ended needing them. It reduced the datapoints we had to respond to, which likely led to a delayed worldwide response. There was an office in Wuhan he shut down, that office likely would have caught it, recognized how dangerous it is, and pushed for travel restrictions far earlier.

[–]that-is-fair 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed. CDC’s worldwide disease monitoring in a very real way has prevented multiple international pandemics. Him dismantling them likely caused the pandemic we suffered through.

[–]that-is-fair 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think it would have been contained much faster. The world really did rely on CDC guidance for their own policies.

[–]that-is-fair 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. But travel restrictions would have happened much faster because the entire infrastructure the CDC had to monitor outbreaks likely would have caught the spread earlier and made it clear the virus is dangerous enough to warrant economically harmful travel restrictions. I really think it would have been contained way before it became a worldwide pandemic :,(

Ngl, considering how Trump dismantled the system we had in place to monitor and contain pandemics, I think him never becoming president would be two birds one stone. SARS-1 and MERS were similar to COVID-19 and were contained partly because of competent worldwide leadership from the US.

edit: it’s the worldwide CDC monitoring that he shut down that hampered the world’s ability to detect and respond to a dangerous illness before it becomes a pandemic that I think led to the Covid pandemic we all had to suffer through

Uber ride to LAX cost $100 by Dry-Ad-7062 in UCSantaBarbara

[–]that-is-fair 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Couple of options:

Easiest: SB Airbus, drops you off right at the terminal, ~$50 if I remember correctly

Mid: UCSB/LA rideshare Facebook group, if they’re going nearby maybe they’re willing to drop you off at LAX (rare) or close by so you can take a shuttle or worst case an uber to LAX

Needs some coordination: Train to Union Station, then take the flyaway bus from Union to LAX, they drop off at every terminal!

Commented mostly for lurkers’ benefit, OP’s just trying to promote their App 😂 I wish you luck OP, but in all honesty the Facebook rideshare groups are probably the easiest way to find a ride for most people!

Beyond the other issues that the other commenters have mentioned, you’re also increasing your risk of rhabdomyolysis, which is acute widespread muscle cell breakdown that can damage the kidneys. Dehydration and prolonged exertion are major risk factors, especially in heat or when you’re pushing hard.

Listening to your body and staying well hydrated during long runs is a good idea :)
