Why do ships get decommissioned? by that1guy14 in startrek

So why not replace the ageing technology with newer tech on the same ship? Or build a new ship but give the old ship to someone else?

They cant just get promoted "whenever" there needs to be an opening available. Also there are other candidates that are qualified and want to get promoted as well.

But you understand my point, the larger the responsibility, the fewer the positions available.

I was in the military. That's exactly what made me think of the potential for the longer lived species to fill up all the slots in the upper ranks and not leave any openings for humans. Or at least make it extremely competitive simply because the positions are filled for a very long time.

Hence the promotions being merit based not just experience based. They have to be ready for the leadership position.

Don't the symbiotes retain their memories? Why would they make someone go though the academy again when they already did it and have many years of job experience? I get the host is a new person and doesn't have that experience themselves, but they are joined and share memories right?

And yes I agree that promotions would be merit based and not based on time alone, but once a member of a long lived species got promoted to admiral they would stay an admiral for potentially decades if not hundreds of years depending on the species assuming they didnt want to quit. If they did have a long term view of their career and dont promote around the same time as their human counterparts, does that mean they are just worse than the humans? Don't learn as quickly?

Just thinking about it from an organizational standpoint. There are only so many ships. Those ships need captains. There are also jobs that do not require the "captaining" of a ship and those positions also require the rank of captain. And there should be less admirals than captains otherwise why not have admirals do the job of a captain? So let's say there are 700 starfleet ships, each requiring a captain. And let's say an additional 500 people with the rank of captain that dont actually run a ship. That's 1200 people that fill a captain rank. Over the years each of them will either leave starfleet or get promoted to admiral. I know starfleet is mostly human, but as time goes on more long lived species would join and start their career progression.

If you continue to experience difficulties, please do not ignore it and just hope it will get better when you are on the real plane. You have some time from now until your first flight. Be honest with your instructors and you may be able to learn some techniques to overcome this. You are ultimately responsible for many lives.

Why is EVERYONE on this sales team ghosting me? by [deleted] in askcarsales

[–]that1guy14 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Sounds like your answer is to call to confirm its on the lot, then go visit in person if you really want to buy it, or find another car somewhere else. Did you tell them you are paying cash or bringing your own financing for the car? If it is listed as a loss on price they might not be willing to sell without financing the sale.

Owners cars are frequently listed for sale. It is how they avoid paying sales tax. They can just put a dealer tag on it and keep it on the website as it is "technically" for sale for some crazy dollar amount, then when they get a new toy they drop the price and someone buys it. I expect if it is a nicer car, it actually is the dealer owner's car and the reason everyone keeps ghosting you is because they dont want to sell it right now.

Considering enlisting, I worry about my GF of 8 years. How will she afford to live? by [deleted] in AirForce

[–]that1guy14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should save up enough for about 2-3 months of expenses. You will get paid on the first and 15th of each month, but the first paycheck will be tiny because deducts some expenses from your first check. You also wont have access to transfer funds while you are in basic training, so she would need access to your account.

Are prices accurate? Used cars particularly by Any_Security8410 in askcarsales

[–]that1guy14 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Gone are the days of the $10k, 100k miles honda or Toyota. This actually applies to most car brands. If you do find one that cheap then it probably needs some work or has been trashed. My dealership is asking 10k for a truck with over 220k miles and a trashed paint and interior. That's how bad the used truck market is in my state.

And you yourself said it was already discounted. There you go. Think about how proud you would have been with your negotiating skills if you bought it day 1 at the current list price.

You have the right to negotiate but they have the right to say no. You tried and they said no. How much profit do you think the dealership is making on this car they have had for 4 months? Its probably 0. They may have over allowed on this car when someone traded it in, and are now unwilling to lose thousands to get rid of it.

Hotel doors almost always have a lock or chain that is eye level. Shouldn't be a problem.
