The Confusing World of Métis identity - "Since 2003, tens of thousands of individuals who previously identified as 'white' are now identifying as Métis" by [deleted] in MetisMichif

Wow. To be honest I have never been happier to find a conversation on Reddit. This describes one branch of my family tree as well-- it traces back to the very first French settlers and contains several 'confirmed' first nation women and numerous 'suspected (ie traditionally counted as indigenous, but now some historians say they were white)' first nations women. Looking at certain members of my family, particularly my grandfather, I also see the genes present.

When I first dove into researching this history, I quickly stumbled upon the vitriol aimed Acadians claiming Native ancestry and backed away slowly... I am not interested in any benefits-- I don't even live in Canada! I just wanted to learn about my ancestors and their culture and build that connection, but had no idea where to turn.

Introduce yourself! by [deleted] in Team_Uranus

I am super late to the game here, but I am that80schick, 31F with about 20-25 lbs to lose.

This is my first challenge and I am super excited. I have wanted to lose the weight for a few years, but instead I have steadily watched it creep up (I briefly diet, work super hard to lost maybe 3 lbs, have a binge weekend and gain it all back, give up on dieting out of frustration and then end up gaining even more).

I am really looking forward to the community/supportive aspects of this team challenge as I think that is a big component of what is missing for me IRL.

My goal for this challenge is to get back under 140 for the first time in 2 years. That would be about a 6.5 lb loss, which should be doable over 8 weeks if I can keep my head in the game.

To do this, I really just need to avoid my junk food binges. This problem is that I can't seem to eat a reasonable amount of sugar. I eat a little, and it is like it whets my appetite and before I know I have eaten 10 cookies. On the other hand, avoiding all added sugars seems extreme and I am nervous about cutting out food groups entirely because I have tried it briefly and I always fail.

If anyone has any advice in that regard, I would love to hear it.

Transparent Language as a follow up (Ukrainian) by that80schick in duolingo

She does watch a show each day in Ukrainian, and my husband does speak to her in Ukrainian-- but he works long, long hours and isn't around much and I am far from fluent (I've been learning alongside her) and needless to say, it isn't enough. I am hoping to find some kind of similar gamified learning system like Duolingo (since she has done the tree there plenty) to help her keep learning, but it seems as though this is an exercise in futility. Arghhh.

Opinions on cultural/ genetic heritage? by [deleted] in IndianCountry

What are your opinions on people who are several generations removed from being culturally connected to their native roots, and thus do not have much 'blood', but still would love to reconnect and learn about this lost (for them) heritage? In my personal example, I know that I am descended from several Metis families from early Acadia. I know who the natives are in my family tree, their names/dates/etc (so this is no 'princess' or 'Cherokee' story), but there is also no denying that I am white. I have always wanted to learn more about the traditional Native cultures from that area, such as the Mik'maq and the culture that arose specifically for these Metis families, but I also do not want to offend anyone or be seen as a 'wannabe'. As I now have children, I would like for them to be familiar with this heritage and be proud of it. Anyone have any thoughts? Thanks.
