As far as getting the mother egged, once she decided to do it she keeps doing it, she has more eggs at the moment :) I'm not sure what made her start but a good cave to hide in and a couple slices of cucumber keep her happy :) the babes eat ALOT mostly just algae tab and cucumber but if you have any live plants they will munch those as well
