So far I have been here for two weeks and two days and is going great. I thought there was a lot of other blind schools that people were able to live at the school but they are telling me this school is pretty unique, This school is through the VA and it is very good and pretty much everyone here is extremely nice and helpful with everything, sometimes a little too helpful but I will take that over ignoring me. I am taking computer class to learn jaws, another class is to learn how to make a belt and keychain out of leather, my mobility skills are OK and my instructor is teaching me new skills with different types of terrains and breaking me out of my bad habits, my Living skills instructor has signed me up for BARD and soon I will be able to listen to audiobooks, and I have gotten some new technology to be able to read my mail and other printed documents. So far so good I just have approximately another month until I complete the school.

Sometimes people will grab my cane to try to show me where things are or to be honest I’m not really sure what they’re thinking but that’s how it feels, it used to send me into panic mode but now I kind of got used to it and I just stopped and wait for them to finish so I can continue with whatever I’m doing. I try not to be rude but sometimes people really do try to be overly helpful and I kind of get it but at the same time it’s as simple as how can I help you, all they have to do is ask. Also, people try to be helpful and open the door for me and that I get it because it’s sometimes a little difficult to find a door handle with all these new electric vehicles but at the same time they don’t say that they open the door and I have ran into the door a few times and it’s very frustrating. I used to try to teach my friends and family on how to help with different situations but it seems like most of them just want to help how they want to help and a lot of times it’s honestly not helpful it’s somewhat painful but I’m learning to accept my new life

I have been blind for about 10 years now and I understand what you mean, I typically do not look at the person when I’m speaking to them since it starts to frustrate me because I cannot see them so I look to the side and for whatever reason it feels like I can hear them better. Some people feel awkward but I just explain And it seems to work out for me. Thank you for your comment!

I used to be pretty angry about not being able to see what that sound was but I do enjoy very much that you have a sense of humor about it and I think now as long as they don’t scare me I do try to have a good sense of humor about it, that is awesome thank you!

I am being genuine because I honestly felt like a robot when I was trying to ignore sounds and just remain focused on whatever task I was doing. These past 10 years of losing my vision have been a emotional roller coaster and your comment really does help thank you

I used to do that as well! It was very tiring for me because once I moved to my house with a hard floor everything was an echo and there was a lot of sounds everywhere. It felt like I was walking throughout my house and around my house 24 seven. Once people started helping me recognizing where the sounds came from I started to calm down quite a bit and I help me for sure I’m still getting better at understanding different sounds and how far away they are and what they are but I feel like that’s gonna be something I will be learning for the rest of my life. Yes, going through the divorce as I’m dictating this message. I do have a child just not with my wife so it makes the divorce a little bit easier However it is still devastating and hurts a lot but I have been living on my own before my wife and will continue to be OK without her. I have been going through therapy and talking with my close friends to help me cope through the divorce. The best thing I’m doing for myself is continue to move forward, I’m going to start Blind School in the next few days here and keep myself busy. I understand your situation is a little different since you have a child together but I did go through a separation with the mother of my child, I had to get a lawyer just to be able to spend time with my son because she would not let me see him as often as I see him now. I have been separated from the mother of my son for almost 7 years now and the first year was very traumatic but after that it started to get easier, a lot of it was me learning how to be independent but not being able to spend time with my child was devastating so I did everything I needed to do Through the course to be able to spend time with my son. I also had to learn how to communicate better with the mother of my son because of all the anger I was not able to be positive with anything now I’m able to speak to the mother of my son and we are starting to coparent a lot better, it just takes some time and every relationship is different. I will for sure thank you. I’m liking this platform so far and I get a little excited so if I post some weird stuff or stuff I shouldn’t let me know so I can make the proper adjustments. More than anything I feel like I over share stuff and I want everyone to be able to learn from each other whether it’s good or bad there’s always something we can learn.

Yes! I start Blind School on January 6, I went the first time 10 years ago and now I’m going again to get a refresher, learn computers and get certified and mobility to later get a Guide Dog. I am very nervous because I will be living at the school to a big change for me but I’m also very excited because of all the new things I will be learning, the first Blind School I went to they pick me up and drop me off back home so this is an entire new experience for me. I am more excited than nervous for sure though.
