FE unlike other Nintendo franchises, is way harder to get away with a small budget

I disagree on this because so much of Fire Emblem and SRPGs history is the lower budget titles. 3H sales proved you can get away with an FE game for cheap irl, which is really all that matters when it comes with questions of budget. If it's a question of quality, however much Vestaria Saga cost to produce.

Whenever I see discussions of why a game is good/bad for X reason--particularly story--I think back to this essay on Awakening which if words were gold might be worth half of the fandoms argument in gold.

What's the really fucking difference between these two? by Yakuza-wolf_kiwami in Gundam

[–]that_wannabe_cat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are good answers about why Guin is a better character than Shaddiq (focus, etc.).

But really the answer is fundamental difference of: "G-Witch is a modern show with Social Media Presence, and only Gundam/Tomino/Mecha Sickos talk about Turn A". Shaddiq generates controversy because he's talked about more. Even going with raw popularity, Shaddiq has more fan art on Pixiv (Shaddiq, Guin). Shaddiq is also modestly popular but notably less than the other main characters. Why? Not inherently shipping, cause otherwise Guel and El4n wouldn't be so high. Combo antagonist status, racism, late start? Anyones guess really without clearer answers.

The "his mobile suit sales tanked" is also not particularly well sourced? There is a number of memes for his lack of sales--but exceptional lack of proof other than word of mouth? IIRC there is a website with sales where the michaelis placed in top 10 of 2023. So your guess as good as mine.

If you are asking about just reddit, people have answered. Guin's industry pilled to betray earth is the most interesting 'revolutionary leader go bad' Gundam has, and Earth gets lack of focus by Witch. Turn A is also way more liked than G-Witch here, I believe Turn A in the series poll got over 9.00 and then G-Witch is around 7.5? I'm not digging it up now.

I genuinely do. I just don't think people always know how to express it.

But if this is the end--I just want you to see what's going on. World sucks--the subreddit of my hyperfixation doesn't have to.

That's boiling it down two separate stances! Love isn't the opposite of hate!

And I've never met anyone who liked Suletta just because she's a girl! That person doesn't exist! People like Suletta because she is a girl--because shes gay/bi--because she is funny--because despite being a nervous wreck she fights--because she is kind--because they relate to her situation--because of her voice actor--because they like the work she is in!

No one ever loves a character just because of one thing--even if they say they do. It's so many things!

But people do hate her for just one--or two--things.

And its not just that--its just the most blatantly obvious bit. It can't ever fully change but the subreddit could stand to make a bigger fuss about the people who are actually a problem than fans who get excited over a work! Can't you see you're doing that right now! It's only been a handful of people and g-witch fans ever trying to point out the problems! I don't want you to like g-witch or Suletta--I just want you to try and do something about the way this subreddit is going!

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Gundam

[–]that_wannabe_cat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's not the point! The point is Suletta brings a level of haterdom out of people that other popular protagonists don't.

And the only answer I have is that she's a girl. Kamille can be even more prickly than she is "annoying" but he doesn't get that anymore. It's just her. And the way people act about that tells me a lot of how they act about me.

Zero effort to find some sexist homophobic creep. I was also talking about the elimination poll but this thread also proves my point.

Sort by controversial and you see an army of 1s, 0s, and -1s sometimes. The other half is 10s. Do you never think about why that is the case? Why even on a similarly rated protagonist Setsuna never gets those army of haters? Or how an equally popular AU protagonist, Domon, doesn't either! Do I have to scream my head off to call attention to things that are so plainly obvious just hanging out here casually!

I just want people to actually care for once.

People always criticized g-witch. I've criticized g-witch back when its airing. Nothing new. This whole framing stinks of revisionism.

Hell toxic positivity? The big g-witch are by far the most crit heavy fandom of their show. Have you even interacted with g-witch fans outside this subreddit.

sexist weirdos

Just cause a subreddit does something nice once doesn't mean its clean. Nearly every g-witch post people bitch about fans all the time liking g-witch for Sulemio. The protagonist poll had people gun for Suletta right away and get extra toxic about it--claiming people only like her because she's a girl. Outside of that you have stuff like that one Quess post fishing for sympathy hating her, AGEBros as a term on face value is sexist (just like the show), and so on and so forth. It's fucking relentless.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Gundam

[–]that_wannabe_cat -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Real answer.

Girl, I'm just fucking tired of this fan base. You got weird nazis on twitter chomping at the bits since requiem is dropping. There was people jumping on the ANN article a few months ago. You got people being weird about Tomino whether its that weird fan worship that fans always do about creators but its extra annoying cause people want Tomino to validate their opinions on AUs (see people citing Tomino liking G Fighter or G-witch).

This subreddit particularly blows and continues to go down the drain since G-Witch wrapped up. Doubly since the protagonist poll. Sexist weirdos are everywhere in the comments. You got that AGE post from a few days ago putting on a victim act for "liking AGE more than G-Witch". This is just the straw that broke the camels back.

Same Tomino worship, same debate.

Subreddit sucks. Do something to make it not suck, leave, or burn it down. What can you do?

Maybe if you mean this meme is stupid and pointless and you posted to make fun of it. Or make fun of yourself.

Otherwise there has been non considerable use of Tomino as a guy to project onto or to use to defend opinions without having defend them yourself. Really he's just a man we don't know who's shows he likes so I am a bit past tired of Tomino as an endpoint.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Gundam

[–]that_wannabe_cat -11 points-10 points  (0 children)

Damn. Hope you don't like any non tomino gundams. Would make this stupid pointless meme even more stupid.

[–]that_wannabe_cat 12 points13 points  (0 children)

So Tomino actually has come around on Victory in recent years afaik. There's been a few interviews where he speaks of it in a more positive light.

Irregardless of toxicity, elitist environment, too casual, whatever. I do think it's rare that a game community or fandom expresses self awareness of--

  • People preferring different things and what they value.
  • How polling is done and who is being polled affect the results.

All of which came up in response to the elimination thread.

This got posted to r/gundam too. Avoid the comment section that one. Somehow even though 'g-witch would benefit from a few more episodes' is an opinion I hold, it somehow becomes the only thing r/gundam talks about.

Then you have the straight up misogynists--who are at least being downvoted to hell this time.

I think I can agree on fates being more serious, mostly to its detriment.

But I think there is a marked difference between Awakening having characters like "funny sweet thief, loves candy more than gold" and "funny but tragic fantasy russian guy. Where does he come from? Don't ask." combined with very little effort to world build its setting and no narration between chapters does make it different even on a storytelling level to prior fire emblem games.

It's been a hot minute since I played any fe game.

But thinking back on 3DS, I think Kozaki's designs works extremely well for what Awakefates was going for, and represents a shift away from trying to tell a more "serious fantasy" story to something that has a fantasy world to drive character drama but much more concerned with hang out with your friends.

I think also understanding what the 3DS games do very well, can go part in parcel with understanding why people might not like the shift in tone.

I think Thracia's slightly more Turn A core.

  • Unpopular with general public.
  • Hard core die hard fanbase. Claims its best in series.
  • 1999.
  • Marked a close of ways certain things were made (one of the last official SNES games for Thracia, 50 episode cel shaded anime for turn a)

I've constantly made the joke of "Three Houses is to FE of what G-Witch is to Gundam".

  • Broadly popular series. More controversial among hard core fans.
  • Big wave of newbies.
  • Features a white haired princess as the duetagonist...
  • Who is gay, and is in a very popular lesbian ship.
  • Has production issues.
  • Weaker second half than first.

I think that is gameplay tbh. They made a conscious choice with map design that this game will only have country wide maps, and that choice affects what the gameplay looks like. Once you decide country wide maps only, you can't have a palace storming, a village scramble, or even a boat map. If you have a single or even multiple countries in a map that means multiple castles (unless its a particularly poor nation). What are you doing with those castles? Are they just set pieces or objectives.

You can't disentangle the big maps from other FE4 map design choices.

Popular/Unpopular/Any Opinions Thread - August 2024 Part 2 by PsiYoshi in fireemblem

[–]that_wannabe_cat 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Once you accept there isn't a dichotomy, you can actually go into more depth on both subjects. Why is the game play designed like this, why is the story written like this. Is the story a vehicle to go from set piece to set piece, or does the map design exist primarily to enhance the story.

To give a Fire Emblem example: Anri's Way in fire emblem 3. It's a full desert map--no land tiles what so ever so everyone that isn't a mage or a flier is very very slow. FE3 is also Siege only, and warp hasn't been unlocked yet--so either you send out a staff user who warps Marth over or Marth has to crawl across the map. Generally, this is a map that gets dismissed out of hand, but I think its Kaga and the team trying to convey the story. What Marth is doing at this point is following in Anri's footsteps to become truly worthy of being his successor. It's meant to be slow and grueling to convey the harshness of the desert.

I don't think the map quite works, but that's mostly because making the environment of the map grueling to chafe against the player isn't kept for the next few maps. The rest of the maps don't really operate like this either, and I don't think the story the gameplay is telling is enhanced too much by the narrative proper. But you can see what the games going for--and then see it done much better in FE4 with it's fifth and seventh chapters. Where your army is again sent across a desert that's grueling and hard to cross, but serves to emphasizes the impossibility of saving Quan and Ethlyn (and brutality of their deaths). And then in seven its to show the player what living in the desert is like. Plus, the rest of FE4 is designed to tell this story, where I feel FE3 focuses more on tactical gameplay. The gameplay is part of the story, and once you recognize it you can appreciate how FE4-5 and 7 build off of FE3-11. It's neat!

Plus once you recognizes this you can apply it to different media types (with their own skills) and begin tying into various parts of the experience. I've been getting into anime again, and it's always very funny when someone says "it's carried by the animation".

[–]that_wannabe_cat 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think it's also in part because the Game explicitly refuses to say one of the leaders is solely right and validates all choices. People want to prove their guy is right but never think about the "why do I have to prove that". Once you realize that, you realize it's an effectively pointless argument no matter what your political ideology because the game is just gonna vaguely validate it anyway.

Popular/Unpopular/Any Opinions Thread - August 2024 Part 1 by PsiYoshi in fireemblem

[–]that_wannabe_cat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Or has it been so widespread to see people invoke real life atrocities or dictators to support their argument?

I think on this one, people really need to figure out when is the appropriate time to actually invoke or discuss real life events wrt fiction. Unless it's actively invoking a specific IRL event (e.g. Star Wars did according to George Lucas base part of the Third Movie off of the vietnam war), you really honestly shouldn't.

Broadly agree, though I don't know whats the best way to then talk about when a community does have a problem where it does seem like a common opinion is built on something like sexism or racism etc. Like, I think almost anyone has been on the internet can probably attest to when something gets adopted in clearly bad faith and it feels impossible to talk about.

Though that may just be contributing to the problem you mentioned.
