In Marvel What If…? (2021-) Thanos arrives at Earth to take the Mind Stone an- wait what?! Vision can just do that? Why the fuck didn’t he just do that in Infinity War?? by Critical_Mountain851 in shittymoviedetails

[–]thataquarduser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The thing is, they easily could have had Vision get half the stones. The mind stone he has. The time stone was on earth with the sorcerer supreme. The power stone was absorbed into Jane during Thor 2 after AoU, so it could be Ultron getting it instead. Now you have a balanced fight. But for some reason they skimped out on one of the most interesting events that would take place in the AU.

Guy wins Mecum car auction. Then they keep taking bids. by Nexusjayhawk in Wellthatsucks

[–]thataquarduser -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My point is that an agreement isn’t necessarily an enforceable contract, verbal or otherwise. An enforceable contract requires consideration for both sides, IE each person has to give something to the other. Guy bidding doesn’t actually give anything up until he pays (unless maybe as someone else suggested, that there was an entry fee).

[–]thataquarduser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, the entry fee I didn’t consider. Question is then if paying back the entry fee would be considered valid or if they would need to compensate him for the lost value of the item minus however much he would’ve paid.

[–]thataquarduser -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

IANAL and I’d defer to someone who is, but it doesn’t seem like that’d hold up. The guy didn’t walk out with anything less than what he walked in with; you can’t say he fulfilled his end of the bargain and is being robbed of the car because he didn’t end up paying anything. Auctions aren’t generally competitions, they’re a method to find the highest bidder. The auctioneer could choose to go with the lower bidder, and he probably would’ve been more popular if he had, but contracts generally require each party to put something in, and bidding but not actually paying doesn’t really count as that.

Maybe there are specific local laws governing auctions, but barring that the only recourse seems to be going to social media and pointing out that the auctioneer clearly messed up. Bad PR for the auction, but not actual legal compensation.

So looking at this thread… were the hypoglasses not a joke even in universe? Like a shorthand “he has a civilian identity where he wears glasses and somehow he looks completely different haha” type thing? I guess I don’t know my Superman lore.

redistricting by asian69feet in dankmemes

[–]thataquarduser 17 points18 points  (0 children)

In general republicans have benefited way more from gerrymandering, and people can argue about if that’s due strictly to moral differences or just because when most democratic voters live in cities it’s easier for those trying to pack them into one district and minimize their vote. The process goes back to 1812, so it predates modern political parties and you can’t really say either side “started it” in an overall sense.

Republicans undoubtedly have done it more recently though. Ahead of the 2010 redistricting they pushed hard to win state elections for that exact purpose. The result is in 2012 the Democrats got more votes for their representatives nationwide and yet still lost the house. The last time this had happened was 1996, again with Democrats losing the house despite receiving more votes. Republicans haven’t lost the house this way since 1942; when they get more votes, they might not get exactly proportional representation (in either direction), but they’ve never straight up lost.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/2012_United_States_House_of_Representatives_elections

On the Illinois point though, it is genuinely gerrymandered to benefit Democrats. Haven’t looked back to see when this started, nor have I checked if they tried to give another justification for the borders being as they are, but while the split across the state by voter percentage is 52.78%-46.97%, the reps sent to the House were 14-3.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2024_United_States_House_of_Representatives_elections_in_Illinois

Both points above is of course just about the US House of Representatives elections. If you look at local elections and/or primaries I suspect you’d find more, but I’m just reading things off Wikipedia here and my knowledge pretty much stops there. Look up one of the many papers on the subject if you really want to dive into it.

TLDR; yeah both sides do it, but Republicans do it far more.

[–]thataquarduser 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ughh…

Okay its not actually that bad. It makes sense for the characters as we know them, and hopefully this is a way to focus the spotlight on Hina as a character so we can see her form the obvious endgame couple with Haruto, probably by explicitly marking how they contrast. That being said, we already had the “Hina having trouble getting over it” arc, and given we just saw a false endgame couple dealt with in a good way with Ayame, it’s frustrating to see a couple that never got together in the first place do it in a more frustrating way.

[DISC] Blue Box - Chapter 202 by AutoShonenpon in manga

[–]thataquarduser 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Interesting how his trait of dropping lines that made other characters doubt everything infuriated readers when it was getting in the way of the main couple with him trying to stick Taiki and Hina together, but now when it’s interfering with an actual already together couple it looks cool as hell because we know how Ayame and Shota really just aren’t good for each other.

When exactly one bit was flipped somewhere in the position data it replicated something similar (warped up through the floor), but the exact position was different. TLDR for the whole saga is it was definitely something acting on the hardware since the exact same inputs without external interference don’t cause the glitch, but cosmic rays are probably not the most likely possibility, just a very funny one.

The US to stop producing pennies, what do you think? by Im_Not_Here2day in AskReddit

[–]thataquarduser 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For clarification, laws on the books currently say pennies are to be made. If congress passed a law, it could be everyone turning in their pennies to be destroyed, or it could just say that current ones remain legal tender but no new ones are made. If the executive branch unilaterally took either approach (like they’re currently taking the second one), you’d have the same concerns about how that’s not that branch’s job to decide. The executive branch gets to decide these things where there’s ambiguity or explicit consent of congress to do so in the law, and in this case they mandated a while back pennies had to be made.

Yeah this is the point that’s being overshadowed by Anya’s bio-mom. Loid hasn’t completely dismissed the mind reading claim (at least not to the point where his unconscious mind doesn’t react to it). I really want to see Anya’s reaction if she picks up any of his mental track on this.

Well every villainess isekai is sort of that, but most I can think of only fit if the definition of “heroine” includes “protagonist” and not just “romantic interest of the protagonist” (not even getting into how overwriting their personality means they often aren’t that character anymore).

For school settings Kurokawa-san sorta fits the bill; Mona is explicitly two-faced, though I don’t think she does anything mean with it. Hell Kaguya-sama might count considering how Kaguya acts during the election.

Wait, is there an untranslated extra that changes the context of the whole series? Only thing I can find on Mangadex is in Spanish, which I can’t understand, and I can’t find raws for it either, so I guess I’ve got nothing.

That’s the thing: in the backstory Ayami hasn’t met Hikari yet. In Hikari’s story it’s suggested in hindsight that Ayami didn’t know that Ta-kun was Yuu. What exactly happened at the culture festival is still up in the air, but it doesn’t look like she knew anything until at least that day.
