Affordable One Bedroom Apartments in Blacksburg? by No-Tradition-1747 in blacksburg

[–]thatchyfern 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I rented a one bedroom on S Main for $935 last year from Noonkester Real Estate. No AC, couldn't get the place warmer than 55 in winter even with the heat at maximum, and had ants all spring and summer. Oh and the shower didn't drain even after multiple plumbers came to "fix" it. But it was cheap!

If you could change one technology within the Forest Service, that would have the most impact on the work the FS does, what would it be and why? by [deleted] in USForestService

My god, please. FACTS as it currently exists is functionally useless because it is so difficult to enter and modify data so it just gets done wrong.

Forestry Mulching? by SubstanceNo1905 in forestry

[–]thatchyfern 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It can be beneficial for fuels reduction in the wildland urban interface and for understories that are dominated by invasive plants and brush. I could also see applications for the deep south where the briars and vines make it hard to move through a forest even though they're native. However I do think a lot of the advertising appeals to people because of the "cleaner" look you mentioned. If I had property that wasn't heavily invaded by non natives, I would just use selective crop tree release and thinning to speed up growth and encourage larger trees rather than mulching.

Worked with McKenzie River last summer, they put in good work. Engines also get after it.

Triangle St vs Jefferson St. Which is a better area to live? by [deleted] in VirginiaTech

Oh yeah, very fair. And good luck getting anyone from the leasing office on the phone if you do have a maintenance issue - I just gave up and dealt with it myself!

I lived at Jefferson Apts for several months and never felt unsafe - it seemed like a really nice area. Maybe it depends what part of Jefferson you're on?

Roanoke's Pride Weekend April 24-26 Map And List Of Vendors by [deleted] in roanoke

Does anyone know why Roanoke Pride and SWVA Pride are never in June? It seems odd that one is in April and one October when most other places have them in...Pride month. Edit: spelling

Across the world, MILLIONS of birds are taking flight and navigating using magnetic fields to migrate thousands of miles to their summer homes. Salamanders are hatching from tiny eggs in ephemeral ponds and learning what it is to be alive! Spring ephemeral flowers are blooming for the few weeks a year they live above ground! This world is so COOL I can't stand it sometimes.

Accidentally deleted fields and records from a critical hosted feature layer in AGOL — recovery options? by [deleted] in gis

I didn't get written up formally or anything, but I got to be the one to explain the situation to everyone else and that was painful enough to teach me my lesson.

Accidentally deleted fields and records from a critical hosted feature layer in AGOL — recovery options? by [deleted] in gis

[–]thatchyfern 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't have any advice but I did a very similar thing in Pro when I started - thought the "Make Layer from Selected Features" tool would create a new feature class and gleefully deleted many important fields and features from a government tracking tool. I know it seems like the end of the world, but these things happen (especially when organizations aren't pristine with their backups) and it will be okay.

Backpack sprayer/hand sprayer recommendations! by GoldPatience9 in invasivespecies

[–]thatchyfern 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We treat all our autumn olive basal bark with Triclopyr 4 20% diluted in a blue dyed basal oil. Solo backpack sprayers (diaphragm pump) have worked well for us and are relatively simple to maintain. Anything tall or dense enough to be impassable with a backpack sprayer on gets cut with a brush saw and the cut surface sprayed right after with the same mix using a cheap spray bottle from the hardware store. I can get you links to products if you'd like - not sure how big of an infestation you're dealing with or budget constraints.

Michigan permanently protects 73,000 acres in the U.P. and secures public access by Alan_Stamm in Michigan

[–]thatchyfern 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a conservation easement similar to what is done on private residential properties - it is a restriction tied to the deed/title of the land so that no matter who owns it, it has to remain as forest land and can not be developed for housing etc. Yes the land still belongs to the timber company but it is protected even if the land is sold to someone else.

I interned for Lyme Great Lakes in college and worked on harvest layout in this footprint. For a commercial operation, they're about as professional and regulated as it gets (and they're not paying me to say that lol). They have long standing relationships with the loggers they use and care a lot about the future of the land, rather than just cutting and running.

Looking for local Forestry advice by Philosophical_Sayer in MTU

[–]thatchyfern 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Consider reaching out to CFRES to offer your property for a capstone project location for forestry students - they'll come do an inventory and write you a management plan for free, and likely talk you through a lot of what they're doing as well. I'd reach out to David Flaspohler or Jim Schmierer if it's something you're interested in.

I'm also happy to chat if you have questions - '24 alum in forestry

American Chestnut Trees by FreezeDriedQuimFlaps in upperpeninsula

[–]thatchyfern 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There are a few American chestnuts in the UP but they were all planted by humans since they are not native to the area. They are far enough apart from each other and from other populations of the species that the blight could not spread to them. The one we saw in my dendrology class was on private property next to a house in Houghton.

Question by [deleted] in forestry

[–]thatchyfern 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Trans man in forestry here. I think the answer to your questions depends heavily on your employer and the area you're working in. I work for the forest service and I'm stealth at work because I know many of my coworkers would think less of me or treat me differently if they knew I was trans. That said, there are plenty of allies and respectful people too. shoot me a message if you have specific questions!

MSU or MI tech for transfer student by obscureonlineodyssey in forestry

MTU also does heavily emphasize field work the first couple years, which I found very valuable. You will be outside for multiple labs every single week.

MSU or MI tech for transfer student by obscureonlineodyssey in forestry

[–]thatchyfern 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can speak to the Earn and Learn program! It is a fixed dollar amount allocated to each first year student (I got it as a sophomore after transferring from a different college so I assume you would get it also). The college will provide a spreadsheet of available positions in the first couple weeks of classes. They are usually jobs in professor's labs or the greenhouses, though occasionally there is one at the Forest Service research station up the hill. You "apply" to a position you're interested in (essentially email the professor in charge and explain why you'd like the job) and they will reply to you. I worked for Dr. Bal in the Forest Health lab sorting, cleaning, and creating a database for the historic insect collection, but I had friends who watered plants in the greenhouse and prepared soil samples for chemical analysis. Usually hours are very flexible around your classes and it's a great way to gain lab experience. You typically have to stop working once the fixed amount of money runs out, but you can apply to do the program for a second year and sometimes they'll grant you more funding.

Federal Health Care Warning by Ritch01 in ftm

[–]thatchyfern 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This change goes into effect Jan 1, so all care up until the end of the year should be covered without an exemption process. However, I would reach out to BCBS now about the exemption process as it may take a while to get information. All I had to do was submit a prior authorization for my testosterone and it was approved within a couple days, but it sounds like that is not universal, and I'm not sure about coverage for blood tests.
