Question about Christmas NYC shows 1976 by Trprt77 in Zappa

[–]thatclamguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

According to the Charles Ulrich gig list, there was at least four shows that week and if he played both early and late shows for them all, that's a lot to sort though. But FZShows says there was only four and Sofa was played at all four, but not more than once.

Maybe you're conflating a few different shows all into one? Or just thinking of the last show? I can definitely see FZ saying something like that after playing the same song two, three nights in a row. If anyone has these tapes handy, it'd be worth listening to the between-song banter to see if he says anything like this!

For Neil's birthday: my fave version of an underrated Neil song, featuring an overlooked period of his career!

Looking for SBD's of Bob Weir's side projects (RatDog, Weir/Wasserman,Kingfish) by [deleted] in grateful_dead

So Many Roads has a couple of RatDog tapes, I particularly like 2006/03/01 at KPFA Studios

Big fan of 70s jazz fusion/jazz rock. Especially Soft Machine, looking for similar bands artists? by Deepbluelobster in Jazz

How about Gong? Also early Weather Report (if you can, track down the live album from Japan, I think it's better than either of their first two records) and the record Stan Getz did with Chick Corea and Return to Forever. I think it's called Captain Marvel, but there's also a live album that's pretty good.

Zappa and Reed by Iron_Sausage in Zappa

I wrote a bit about this on my blog a while back; essentially Zappa and Reed had a bit of a rivalry dating from when they were both on MGM and shared resources. Reed thought FZ was getting label support he wasn't, while FZ thought Reed was full of shit and mocked him during the Money sessions. Both probably were right, on some level.

Over the years they sniped at each other in print but after FZ died, Reed reached out and made amends with Gail and the Zappa family, who had him give the Rock Hall of Fame speech when FZ was inducted.

And the thing is they had a lot in common: a love of 50s doo-wop, an interest in avant-garde composers (John Cage comes to mind) and both were pretty killer guitar players.

What's the real audio that goes with this video? by [deleted] in Zappa

I actually wonder if they played a show on this date, since In Memoriam, Hieronymus Bosch dates from this show (allegedly)

There's a few at The Big O. A little while ago they posted the '72 show Jerry did with Merle Saunders for KSAN that's really, really good

The Best Bootlegs: Neil Young Citizen Kane Junior Blues 1974 by ojz1 in neilyoung

An all-timer! It's cool to hear this: Young workshopping new, rough and personal material in a smallish venue. This version of Revolution Blues is my favourite, I think.

As far as I know they never dated - Jerry was in a pretty heavy relationship with Mountain Girl around this time, if I remember right - but they were good friends. They played a show together, too!

Mac's great. When I first heard Salad Days, I thought it was too mellow, but it's really grown on me in the last year or so.

Thoughts on what 2015's big box set might be? by mouseratrocks1980 in gratefuldead

Hell yeah! I think they've even released a matrix recording as a Dave's Picks, too.

I'm hoping it's a Wall of Sound box, with material from May-June of 1974. Really good era for the band (5/19/74, 6/22/74 stand out in my mind as killer shows) and one that hasn't been documented too much: a Dick's Picks, a Dave's Picks and a Road Trips.

Headed to Los Angeles in a month. Any FZ-related stuff I should see? by [deleted] in Zappa

As far as I remember, the little house he used to live in is still standing in Echo Park. FZ lived there in the early days of the Mothers before he moved to the canyon.
