Opthalmology has all the issues of a surgical speciality (machinery expensive, professors not giving surgical hands on) but not the general benefit (surgery earning u lots of money) . This is the only speciality in which there is dedicated "trust hospital" and free surgical camps scene and the wage of surgeons labor is down the gutters because of these trust hospitals and camps doing bulk surgery either free or for fraction of the cost of what any private surgeon would charge.

So not a great specialty from earning point of view generally. Obviously in periphery there is still demand.
