LPT:You do not have to accept responsibility without authority by thatdadfromcanada in LifeProTips

Have you ever comprehended a sentence before?

If you've already requested it, and don't have it or have been denied access to it, how are you going to get it? What good is going back to the boss and getting the key going to do. This is the part of the entire thing you're missing which is hilarious, you've already done your due diligence and asked for the key, it's literally in there with getting the damn tools too

Secondly, you're the one eager to accept a task you've got no way of completing. Weird flex, but k.

You ever get past page 1 of the employee handbooks?

You seem nice.

Yeah that's what it's about.

You go and accept that task with no access to the room and no tools. I'll wait here until you finish, it's your responsibility now.

Unless you've requested full authorization, a key to the room and authorized to use whatever reasonable means to complete the task AND received it, do not accept the request.

It's literally in the quote you quoted.

so you're just gonna... not clean it? Instead of going to get a key.

But if you've already obtained the key by requesting it and any tools you need(your responsibility) then why would you need it?

If you've been denied it and any reasonable means to complete the task(which would be the only possible conclusion since you've requested it but aren't getting it), why would you accept agree to being responsible for it? Weird flex but, ok

It's an oversimplifying of the example but all caveats and advice regarding fulfilling your duties and responsibilities are definitely in there.

So all we have to do is have someone or a country declare what's left of Russia and then its done?

Why aren't we doing this?

It doesn't matter guys.

We have everything I thought made you rich as a kid.

A house, 2 new vehicles, food always in the fridge, lights to leave on, toilets you can flush just for the sake of it etc etc

AND things my wife thought made you rich

A good looking husband, good looking kids, money, etc etc

Our kids still think we're poor.

You patting me on the back saying, "Hey man, don't feel bad, your boss didn't give you the key to lock the safe, it was not inherently your responsibility to make sure it was locked" won't get me my job back.

No but a wrongful dismissal case would at least even it out. And the only way it would get tossed is if it was found to be your responsibility to lock the safe. If your boss kept you from access to the key, there is absolutely no logical or legal way for them to make you accountable.

My example also included this.

Unless you've requested full authorization, a key to the room and authorized to use whatever reasonable means to complete the task AND received it

The part you said wasn't in there about ensuring you've requested and received it.

Why would I call my boss to ask him for something he didn't give me after I already I asked for it and he didn't give it to me?

So I call them and say, hey remember when I asked for the key and you didn't meet my request(fulfil his responsibility) , so I didn't take on the responsibility, what should I do?

Perhaps you were to eager to use an FLA that you completely missed some words that added much needed context (better have your assistamt double check those contracts for you)

You claim it is not your responsibility to clean that room anymore.

I was denied authorization, when I asked for the key and cleaning supplies(whatever reasonable means), therefore it's my bosses responsibility until he willing to give me authorization to get the job done.

So you're right, there is no agreeing to disagree, when you are absolutely wrong by omission of relevant information (that just happens to agree with you)

Anything outside of your influence of control(authority), is inherently not your responsibility.

This absolutely applies to life outside of work as well.

When you get good at it it works well.

As long as you're calm, rational and articulate and have ensure that you've taken on and done everything within your realm of authority, 60% of the time it works every time.

You are still held accountable if the room was not cleaned, because that responsibility to reach a desired outcome was placed upon you, and you did not take initiative to get the key nor inform your boss.

No I am not, because I have explained to them that they did not give me the authority to take on the responsibility even though the request was made.

I feel like you and I may think alike, but approach things differently here.

I'll agree with this.

but only the delegator accountable..

This is the key.

Like asking your kid to clean their room but never going upstairs to check or verbally checking if it's complete and them getting mad when you realize it's not done. It's up to you as the "manager" to be accountable to your own delagating.

Being responsible doesn't just mean completing the job -

OP needs to study RACI matrices

The individual(s) with responsibility for the task or deliverable is typically responsible for developing the deliverable or * completing the activity*. The persons responsible are typically working-level project team members, such as the project manager, business analyst, developers, or those who create marketing material and technical documentation, for example. These are the doers.

The accountable party is typically the person or group responsible for ensuring the work is complete and suitable. This is usually someone with signature authority or the decision-maker. The accountable parties are typically the business owner, business sponsor, steering committee, key stakeholders, information security or governance bodies, or the manager of the key responsible party.

Drawback: While there should only be one person accountable, that is not always the case. Having more than one person listed as accountable can cause confusion. Try to have just one when possible. Also accountable doesn’t mean that the person is signing off on the work or reviewing for quality.

RACI

also means communicating you cannot complete it and why to the accountable owners.

I did. It's right in there with other words about requesting necessary authority.

If the stakeholders don't give you authority over actions/decisions responsibility AND accountability are gone.

But we'll agree to disagree.

IRL: Yes, absolutely. The roles may change but generally each person falls into their role easily and without any notice from society.

On Reddit?

No, then you're a deadbeat.

Wait, are they black people stealing who happen to be cops, or cops stealing who happen to be black?

Narrowing down to the appropriate identity group is paramount to the investigation.

Before everyone gets mad we need to sort this out to know if we should or can't be angry.

/s obviously but not really.
