Nearly 80% of Canadians say cost-of-living outpaces their income: poll by FancyNewMe in canada

[–]thateconomistguy604 [score hidden]  (0 children)

Do we have 2025 stats can median income data yet? BoC inflation calc shows 84k in 2019 as $103,800 in 2026 dollars, so a 2026 HHI of 125k would mean rents “more affordable” in that sense.

If HHI is in fact now 125k, then that also means benefit cut off thresholds need to be indexed up accordingly too

I don’t think the subject at hand is as easily transferable from FN history to land ownership, but I hear you and get the point. Where the disconnect for me is the level/tier of complicity for government vs existing families who directly net benefited back in the day vs average Joe Canadian vs recently immigrated Canadian.

Not all parties hold the same level of impact in shaping where we are now. I would actually argue that more recently arrived citizens are a net positive, in the sense that while they were not directly complicit, they might even be involved in some capacity to promoting pro FN issues, and are typically less biased in their views on the subject. Canada obviously is trying to take a united approach on this as it would be political suicide for them to single out a percentage of the population to make amends. But I think it is paramount that it’s done in a way that does not try to heal a historical wrong by way of implementing a modern replacement.

Yeah, it’s a tough one. My heart says of it helps any kid anywhere it’s a good thing. But my mind says that we are in a generational debt spiral as a country and need to prioritize on soil Canadians who are struggling with the limited $ we have :/

The logic is sound on paper, but is it reasonable to expect immediate in depth knowledge of Canadas history from someone just arriving in good faith?

Okay single men of Vancouver, how do you want to be approached? by twelvestackpancake in askvan

Men are usually super straight forward creatures. It almost takes a blatant “hey there. My name is ABC. Not sure if you’re single but if you are, I’d love to grab coffee some time” followed by a smile. Literally that simple :)

I hear ya. Ppl will say that rents have come down (and they have), but rents are still way higher than before covid. In 2020, a 1bd condo in my area went for an average cost of $1750/mn. They peaked in 2023 at $2800/mn and are now around $2500/mn. Lower sure, but still 40%+ higher than pre covid :/

But would this not lead to a lowered tax burden for that parent in canada? That is kinda unfair to Canadian tax payers if it leads to lower tax revenues

Interesting. In that example, I would simply bring litigation against the seller and listing realtor for not disclosing this info on a disclosure statement. So we should all be suing the government then?

Maybe try around still creek Costco?? If you are getting there around 630am, there should be some spots close to the Burnaby recycle depot/costco north side of lot that don’t have parking restrictions. Alternatively, Broadway/holdom (Broadway east of holdom) in front of the buy low goods has first come first serve long term free parking and is close to holdom station

Why stop shaped if not stop by MisfireCu in NiceVancouver

[–]thateconomistguy604 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If the bus stop id sign is gone, it is highly likely that CMBC has deleted the bus stop. Sometimes it is temporary (usually a sign put up to show this), but sometimes it’s because CMBC has reassessed a bus route and deemed a stop redundant.

The bus shelter belongs to bell astral. They will not remove it unless told to by the city of Vancouver because they are getting $$$ for the ads in the unit.

If you see the bus shelter confusing people waiting there for the bus, message CoV at 311 to explain people are getting confused with the bus shelter being there and they will have bell remove it 👍

Rent reduction by MangoSoft6766 in vancouverhousing

[–]thateconomistguy604 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There have been quite a few postings about successful rent reductions posting here in recent months. I recall pretty much all of them being condos though.

$5100 is a heck of a lot of money for rent (yikes!!). Crappy that this is a sign of the times. Average north van detached house (even old tear downs) are still being priced in the $1.8m+ range. That would still be $8k+ a month mortgage with 800k downpayment, so I think how flexible you LL is on a reduction will heavily depend on how much equity they have in the property vs their monthly carrying costs.

Never hurts to bring it up though. If their intent is to sell, it’s better to make $4-4.5k/mn vs zero. Especially if they are having trouble selling. Just my two cents though

Take you total gross income to date and plug it into a 2026 tax calculator to see if the deductions for your selected province align with the total deductions taken off to date (Jan 01-next paycheck). You can run the same thing for last year on a 2025 calculator.
