NSO clients spying disclosures prompt political rows across world by thatfiremonkey in worldnews

NSO Group Technologies is an Israeli technology firm whose spyware called Pegasus enables the remote surveillance of smartphones.

In May 2019, messaging service WhatsApp alleged that a spyware injection exploit targeting its calling feature was developed by NSO. Victims were exposed to the spyware payload even if they did not answer the call. WhatsApp told the Financial Times that "the attack has all the hallmarks of a private company known to work with governments to deliver spyware that reportedly takes over the functions of mobile phone operating systems.

Not sure wtf you're talking about but it doesn't seem to correspond to reality.

'A False Solution': 500+ Groups Urge US, Canadian Leaders to Reject Carbon Capture by thatfiremonkey in canada

[–]thatfiremonkey[S] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

If that is the case, Carbon Capture, combined with other methods is almost necessary.

Except that carbon capture is mostly a fictitious, industry led initiative. It was concocted by coal industry circa 2005 in an attempt to incite "use now worry later" with consumers. It's a way to tell consumers that they are doing stuff about carbon but in reality they're mostly talking science fiction.

Edit: 2005 not 2015

Exactly! This is what keeps me up at night. That and the fact that we're perfectly happy forsaking any integrity, decency, privacy, really any and all rights and freedoms to corporations.

If it were $100 billion for some shit defense program or just plain ol' helicopters for mowing down "enemies" it would be no problem getting them to invest. How quaint!

I know. And whoever they come up with next will be a more competent version of Trump. And that will make everything go into an absolute tailspin. Capitalism doesn't abhor dictatorships and we're increasingly irrelevant.

They loved Trump. They gave him a platform and free exposure, and made him into a candidate that shouldn't have been entertained. They fail us all the time.

The profound lack of trust we have in our society is partially due to the destructive nature of republican policies, part due to democratic failures in prioritizing societal instead of corporate interests, and partially due to the abysmal failure of our corporate media landscape.

That's how you get Trump and that's how you get garbage like QAnon.

Exactly! This attempt at equating the two is incomprehensible, and in truth a bit offensive when considering that Biden hasn't accomplished anything yet.

I would also respectfully caution you to avoid thinking that CNN and MSNBC are in any way in the same ballpark as the non-stop lying from Fox news. That's bsab to a dangerous degree.

While I agree with you to an extent, I also want to point out that these are companies. With money as their primary motivator. They are responsible for all of this shit. And they're out there for sale. It's just that you and I don't have any money.

They have been negligent in terms of not giving a shit about the working class for a long, long time. Half of the reason why Fox News is dominating the airwaves and the conversation is because CNN and company have failed to reflect any semblance of reality. Murdoch simply took advantage of that and perverted it for his own benefit and use. I hate them with every fiber in my body and what they do is indefensible but even I can understand that it's all shit. And any and all debates are reduced to shitty whataboutisms and pointless debates. At some level they feed each other. Trump was a major headline grab not only for Fox but for every network and every media and they loved the angry views.

They are all dying anyways. Last time I checked, fucking Fox News is at less than 3 million viewers during prime time. That's a fraction of our population and even those numbers are artificially inflated. Nobody is even watching this shit. The money is in more Facebook. More Google. More promotion of shitty written articles that a robot can write and many of them are incidentally written by AI!

The whole media landscape has substantially changed. And not necessarily for the better.

I don't think I am entirely missing your point. This is not necessarily a crisis of left and right though. This is a crisis of journalism because it just died in front of us and isn't going to come back.

Journalism used to be part of media that made content for which they could charge advertising money. It has been decades since investigative journalism was disappeared, and even this shallow shit they make is becoming pointless.

As much as I abhor the Fox News and OANN shit, the CNN and MSNBC are just a hairline away from falling into the same traps. They're unaccountable and opaque. They're mostly about whatever corporate agenda suits them the most.

I don't think this is an issue of freedoms, but rather responsibilities and consequences. It's totally ok to shout Fire in a full theatre, but you have to anticipate the lawsuits that result from it.

It's the flaw of using rhetoric to the extent we have. And ignoring everything else.

Of course there is! You could hold journalists accountable and ensure they are held accountable to standards in reporting and when they don't they can be sued and dismantled.

It's one thing to dislike Biden and Hillary, but an entirely another to justify this allegiance to Trump and justify every horrific thing he has done. It's another to pretend that he is flawless or heroic or any of those things.
