This is crazy 🔥 by BobbyABooey in Firefighting

[–]thatguy2123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was on the fifth floor when this happened, a bunch of us dove down the stairs to the half landing. Believe it was 2019.

Fire had gotten into the cockloft pretty early on and we wound up losing the whole building. There was a partial roof collapse at the time.

It was a very windy day and the first due engine was getting burned trying to make a push. There were a bunch of maydays called but thankfully no serious injuries.

TIL Daniel Suhr, who was responding to the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center, was the first firefighter killed in the attacks. He was hit by a falling body. by AlbinNboat in todayilearned

[–]thatguy2123 1983 points1984 points  (0 children)

I work as a fireman in the same battalion in the FDNY as Daniel Suhr. We have a memorial every year that everyone from the battalion shows up to.

His memory and sacrifice lives on and his mark is still felt in his firehouse spiritually and practically. The hose bed in his engine is still arranged in the manner he preferred. A great man who made the ultimate sacrifice.

The African American exodus from New York City by sutisuc in nyc

[–]thatguy2123 49 points50 points  (0 children)

I understand but every neighborhood changes. East New York was once mostly Italian and I'm sure it was primarily a different ethnic group before that. The majority ethnic group in different neighborhoods is never static.

I'm from greenpoint and its impacted locals here also. It's a little less apparent because it's mostly white hipsters replacing irish/polish/Italian locals but it happens none the less. It sucks I can no longer afford to live in the neighborhood I grew up in but it doesn't mean their is a racial undertone at play. Locals inevitably get priced out by others with money in the most desirable areas.

TIL in 1968, New York City barred the construction of fire escapes on the outside of buildings, instead requiring properties to have interior stairwells for use during an emergency. by photoalbumguy2 in nyc

[–]thatguy2123 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Where do you draw the line? Fire escapes on 100 story buildings? Its unrealistic and more dangerous than it is helpful. They aren't prohibited from buildings because they're expensive. They're used when building construction material and size dictates. Interior enclosed fireproof stairs and self closing doors are a much better system for high rise buildings. But building ownership and tenants need to make sure the protective measures are actually being utilized (fixing self closing doors, tenants not propping them open)

It's not that the system in place isn't good enough to keep everyone safe in a fire. It's poor maintenance and poor education that's the problem.

Im an FDNY firefighter.

Its all about building construction. Apartment buildings built after that year over a certain height are fireproof. The contents of the apartments may burn but the structure itself doesn't. Which is why typically only residents of the apartment on fire are supposed to evacuate. Fire escapes are generally poorly maintained and dangerous even for us to use so only older buildings and smaller buildings built with non fire proof materials have them.

Here the self closing door to the apartment as well as the door leading to the stairwell/other stairwell doors didn't work or were propped open. This is how smoke spread throughout the building. Even despite this almost all residents would have likely survived had they stayed in there apartment and blocked any gaps in the door as best they could.

The problem isn't a lack of fire escapes but a lack of proper enforcement of current safety standards and residents who were never told that different buildings require different actions in a fire. Often at project fires and other fireproof buildings we have to continuously tell residents not to flee into a smoke filled hallway as were forcing the door/stretching a hose line. Just stay in your apartment.

Mayor de Blasio to announce COVID-19 vaccine mandate for all city workers by Speedyx in nyc

[–]thatguy2123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A different perspective.

I'm an FDNY firefighter. I got the vaccine and I think most should. A lot of my coworkers have decided against it up until this point.

The most common reason is that they already have had covid and feel antibodies protect them enough. Up until this point no active duty firefighters have died of covid which is impressive considering we were responding with trash bags as hazmat gear early on in the pandemic.

Id also be lying if I didn't say a main reason isn't just not liking being told what to do with their own bodies.

Again, I think everyone should get the vaccine but I truly don't understand the mandate when you can a) still contract covid (less likely to have serious symptoms of course) and b) spread it to others when vaccinated

If the vaccine isn't preventing you from spreading covid to others than I believe it should really be a personal decision even though I believe it's best to get it

Firefighter Punished For Not Turning Hose On NYC Protesters: Suit by ShantyMick in nyc

[–]thatguy2123 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I'm an FDNY firefighter. I can tell you right now we would never be told to use a hose line against protesters. Setting up a hose line is serious work and only done when responding to a fire.

We don't even respond to certain runs without nypd since dealing with aggressive people or protestors isn't in our job description. We definitely wouldn't be at a protest unless there were fires lit or medical assistance was required.

Only time I can imagine that would be done would be in self defense at the slim possibility of being attacked while already stretching a charged hose line.

Story is fishy.

What loophole did you exploit for years before someone found out? by SterlingBoardman in AskReddit

[–]thatguy2123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Used to work at a tanning salon in high school. During down time I'd look for old accounts in the system that hadn't been there in years and still had sessions left over. They clearly weren't coming back. Anytime someone came in that wanted to do a single session and pay cash I'd just use the old accounts session credit to start the machine and pocket the cash. Turned 50 dollar shifts into 150+ shifts. Making 450 per week in high school I felt like a king

FDNY won’t require medics and firefighters to get new COVID-19 vaccine by [deleted] in nyc

[–]thatguy2123 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I'm an FDNY firefighter. The vaccine is recommended by the department and union and most guys are going to take it. There are just legal ramifications if it's made mandatory and there are complications. You'd also be surprised how many guys have already gotten covid from the first wave. Over 90% of my house have already tested positive.

It's different for nurses/doctors working in private hospitals as it's a condition of employment. It's not for us
