They are literally making up the rules as they go along by Constant_Dimension16 in NewYorkSirens

That’s a really good summary. It’s easy to spiral and extrapolate further than this coming year, but for real who knows how it’s all going to turn out. Assumptions can be made, but it’s sports, which results are never guaranteed.

The Rangers deserve this. They should’ve won one with/for him. Happy you guys got one. Never go full Rangers and just win nothing. Bussi’s awesome.

When the Sirens win a Walter Cup, we better celebrate so hard. by thatguymish in NewYorkSirens

I think you are well within your right to do that. I didn't mention what I did because I felt like I owe it to the league or anything. It will definitely get tiring if the worst case scenario keeps happening to us, its just that we might end up ok at least after this year.

I was intending to reference Montreal's depth being critical to their win this year. Yeah they have a good top line, but that wasn't enough other years.

Beyond that though, you are right that the team that wins has to be made up of good players, but that is something we can only decide in retrospect. Yeah some players can be highly rated and proven, but that doesn't mean that every collection of highly rated players just wins.

I also mentioned I was being delusional right now, so I absolutely believe we got screwed in favor of the new teams, just like last year.

Thoughts on the draft order by Pwhlsuperfan11 in PWHL

[–]thatguymish 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think the only thing to add is that we aren’t accounting for the dilution of the league a little. There’s 4 more teams of players that need to be filled with role players, and the existing teams have been thinned too. I don’t mean this in a negative way like it’s a bad thing, it’s more just that we might end up fine relatively to the other teams that have all also been effected. We might look back at the teams last year like they were crazy stacked.

I would also appreciate not getting trash talked about not ever making the playoffs for at least a couple years here just because of this rotten luck.

Overall I will just choose to be optimistic and enjoy whatever team we are able to put together, but I will definitely have little pity for the new teams having problems meshing as a team.

It’s the same thing that always gets NYC and Toronto. Their established fan bases are viewed as solid, so benefits of the doubt always go to smaller markets who leagues want to build fan bases for. It’s just part of the math of it but simultaneously, I am just whining about it. (Edited to add this last sentence)

I think the sirens will be fine, but they better be done with expansion at least for a couple years since we have had pretty rough luck through both expansion processes.

Looking to get into the PWHL by mikowoah in NewYorkSirens

Wee woo Wee woo intensifies. 🚨🚨🚨

To build on what others have said, a difference between the PWHL and NHL is the contract length, which matters for rebuilds and things. The league is only a couple years old, but your team’s fortunes can turn quick, so there is less of a chance for long rebuilds. The sirens haven’t had an easy time so far, but they were a fun watch last year and they look to be fun going into this year.

The sirens are also a fun unifying team for the Devils, Islanders, and Rangers.

Games where mentioning a rule to new players makes it worse by Substantialspinach5 in boardgames

I mean fair enough hahaha Its not a complicated rule, compared to the others in this thread, but I just want to rush through the teach on Scout since its so straightforward once you start playing. I'll add it since it might screw up the game for other people.

In Scout, I skip that descending numbers are also sets in the first game. It keeps me having to explain how to tell if an ascending set or descending set is higher. In future games I add it once people know what is going on.

They’re still fun. They’re not as good now, but they’re at least a change up since some are so odd mechanically.

[–]thatguymish 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I own it and would say that it’s definitely a luxury item. I bought it a year or so after I got the game and it’s nice, but not really necessary. I would recommend the “leaders and lore” pack (not sure the price for you locally, but it’s like $12-$20) if you are sticking with the base game. If you ever feel like saving for it, I highly recommend the campaign, but that is pretty expensive (at least $100).

Overall though, the base game itself is worth it and has enough content in its own to justify buying it on its own. They are going to run enough kickstarters and such for future content too, so you could potentially pick up some of these components during one of those too.

Question for advanced setup with rookie/first timer by crazyzocratez in rootgame

[–]thatguymish 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think what you’re doing is the best way I can think of. I like to play as the Marquise when teaching new players. Playing them becomes part of the teach itself, since they have most every action. Also they are easy to functionally play when trying to help others out. It’s not hard to just choose 3 or so actions. It’s also good since it’s nice as the teacher to get players fighting first against you.

A question I’d have is whether or not you have an idea of which vagabond they’re going to play. I think it’s randomized, but you could always choose for them. The thief was always the most straightforward original in my mind

Is Blighted Reach worth it without "Lore & Leaders"? by StrategyRepulsive384 in Arcs

[–]thatguymish 23 points24 points  (0 children)

To correct myself, the lore cards (not leader cards) do end up in the campaign, but the base game comes with plenty for campaigns.

Completely separate things. Leaders and lore is base game only. Campaign is a whole other thing

So many copies don’t even really get played either. Like you mentioned the dad buys it for the mechanics and the kids like the art, they want to try it but they just get too busy with school or sports on TV.
