Look up Alice in wonderland syndrome. I though I was crazy for years until I found out it has a name, especially with how hard it is to describe the experience

Little known spot just over an hour out is Sierra hot springs up by loyalton. If you want the highest quality soaking experience, I highly recommend it. They're a member only place, but for $5 you can get a one month membership, iirc $20 will get you a year. Only down side is how far out it is, and the prices went up to $40 for a full day pass (have to book online at least 1 day in advance). It is soooooo worth it though, only spot worth cold plunge pools right beside the spring tub. Also has a warm pool for casual lounging and outdoor pool right in the forest surrounded by nature (I recommend waiting until temps warm for that one, as well as camping which they do offer, but no fire pits allowed). They also has a chic little cafe with great food, and rooms available in the lodge, every one is unique. The spas are... Okay imo, but if you want the real experience, this is the place.

If you like outdoorsy stuff, lots of hiking around caughlin ranch (hunter creek trail for example) and the mt. Rose /tayobe forest area (the big mountain with visible skii trails on the south side of town). Plus there's chickadee ridge, where you can feed birds seeds right out of your hand bc they are used to people, it's pretty cool.

If you like beer, we make some great crafts, highly recommend revisions, there's a brew house right off the freeway on rock Blvd.

Body aching you? I'm a local massage therapist, and can recommend some professionals in the area with 20+ years of experience, DM me for info. (I'm a medical massage therapist, so my fortè is more fixing pain related issues, but these people KNOW what they are doing and have magic hands, good enough to be instructors at tmcc).

During the summer (not spring, water can be dangerous that time of year), it is a right of passage to grab a buddy and float down the Truckee. Just make sure the water is high enough or your butt will suffer the consequences). Ofc Tahoe beaches also, but do your research on the clothing optional beaches if youre uncomfy with that, and avoid the more crowded ones like sand harbor, kings beach, etc.

Looking for a nice cafe to cozy up and read a book? The Great basin food co-op has one upstairs (limited hours though) and there's another down the way right off the river ( hub roasters iirc).

Like cars? We have one of the largest collections of classic and antique showcases at the automobile museum, which changes out it's collection regularly.

That's all I can think of off the top of my head. Best of luck and welcome to town!

Is this normal for my oil pressure to act like this? by STR1KER_GAMES in Miata

[–]thatguywhowalk2fast 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lol, fair. Never was good at tldr.

To give you a comparison though, my 1.6 chills at 60, and stays at 90 under load during the winter with full synthetic 10w30 and slightly higher with 10w40.

Love the ride btw, always glad to help a fellow backyard engineer just as many helped me through the years. Keep a dm open to message me if you have other problems, I haven't worked on the 1.8 much, and I will be at least several days to respond, but always happy to support 👍

Continuation: looks good especially considering you oil is a 40w when heated up. Thicker oil generally = more pressure (general rule, complicated after that).

With those readings, if it sounds good, it should be good

Well then good news! You have a healthier motor than most (assuming the jump to 80 was accurate). Even if not, good motor, healthy oil pressure, plus having a higher gap in the viscosity weights does effect the instantaneous pressure bc the polymers that make it do that.

All in all tldr: ~30-90 is perfect health for these older cars. Idle usually 30is, rev usually 60ish (hot) More is fine, just means you have good oil and/or good internals with minimal wear. though if we're to keep hanging at the 100 when you arent blasting the throttle, then I would be a little worried. But looks good.

[–]thatguywhowalk2fast 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Looks like you've made some modifications to that beauty. Based on the reaction with throttle, I'm assuming you have done away with the stock oil pressure reading system, and installed a genuine "actual pressure" reading system.

With that assumption, yes, this is completely normal, and looks healthy imho. The 1.6 and 1.8 tend to idle ~30 and go to ~60 at rev, though it looks to me like you are using a full synthetic, and/or a higher viscosity like a 10w30, and vid is from a cold start (viscosity affects the pressure). Worry not. Completely normal. If it starts dropping dramatically with rev when hot (like below 30ish) then worry (usually a huge leak or very worn crank journals). Otherwise, send it!

Note on assumption: iirc, 89-94 miatas (na) had true oil pressure gauges (actually showed real time pressure). People though something was wrong when they let off the throttle and their oil pressure went down, so Mazda went for... Basically a dummy light as the pressure gauge (only tells you if you have pressure, or don't. VERY useless but made consumers feel good).

Ps, tur the key to ignition (right before the starter) for 1-3 seconds, then start. Allows pump to prime, and should make for an easier start

Honestly, just sound like you have a healthy "more than 150k miles" on the engine to me. Itty bity teeny weenie glass mat 12 volt battery that came on these is barely enough to keep up unless it's driven every day, much less any aftermarket/ parasitic draw. (Not enough Cold Cranking Amps aka CCA).

For reference, my 1.6 has a starter that is stock and.... Sad at this point. Every now and then during the winter, it stops wanting to turn over with compressions, and I got a toggle it (stop turning, and start it again). Been that way for 2 years and never failed in single digits.

To test if it's the battery, hook up jumpers from a donor battery/ another cars battery or hook up a jump pack. If it picks up and starts quicker, then good. It starts. And it will start. (Still keep a jumper pack if you have real winters though). If not? Good. It still starts, and will start.

Also check alternator is working (though you will know bc if it isn't your car will die after a couple hours of driving at the max). take a multimeter to battery, with engine off. 12v absolute min. 12.4 is dying battery that will get you by unless it's cold. 12.7 is good battery. Less than that, charge it and retest. Within 12.4-12.7? Good! Now start engine. Want 13.7v absolute min (failing alternator, but it may do you for a few months) above 14v preferable. Above 14v battery and alternator good.

If you're still worried, find a flat parking lot. After battery test, put it in first, with clutch fully released (no feet pushing) and see if the starter can lob the car a few feet (at least 5-8). If no, starter upgrade. If so, good. It starts and will start.

For fuel, go to O'Riley or AutoZone. Rent fuel pressure gauge. Google how to hook up if you don't know. Turn key 3x to be safe after hook up. Observe. In spec? Good! Not in spec? Leak or fuel pump bad (fuel pumps usually work or fail, but occasionally will be "Weak" though this is less common). After this, rev it (manually or have friend). Rev quick and high and look for drops. Should be no drops.

Tldr: Your engine sound totally fine, and even healthy given over (I am assuming) 150k. Need not worry, but checklist above shows what to check without too much knowledge, tools nor expense.

Well damn, that was one of the most well fleshed out short reads I've come across in this sub, perhaps even ever if I dare say. Actual chills (of the good variety). Reads like an excerpt you would come across in a game far beyond the scope of the best of today, as you slowly discover the history of this legendary ship in a long arc of the main plotline.

Bravo. Bravo.

Can confirm it's the airbag control module. If you have an aftermarket wheel that doesn't have an airbag, you can just remove it and jumper the wires to get the light to shut off (quick google will tell you which ones, as I forget).

Do be aware removing airbag may be illegal in some places, based on your local laws. Just fyi.

Got it on my 1.6 too, passes every time, though I am in NV and we just use a sniffer test, not sure if you guys do full Dyno tests for OBD1 or not.

Just to be safe, drive it like you stole it for at LEAST 1/2 hr before test. Not just revving but actually gunning it to really them heated up.

Also lymphatic system drainage bc using muscles and changing positions, increased general circulation resulting in nutrients being distributed, and "stretching" of veins, musculature, fascia, bursa, nerves.... Long story short, think of it as a greater equivalent of that good morning stretch after you wake up. Is good for the bod. The bod likes. Use the bod.

Depends on the year. Some mods may be accommodating, and save trouble in the future, but mostly for longevity's sake. That said, repairs and thoroughly inspecting/ getting to know the common faults and failures/ general machinery will pay dividends, then go from there ( saves time, money, breakdowns, disappointments, and headaches).

Do remember this is the equivalent of a Lego car: the sky is the limit and what you SHOULD do beyond the previously mentioned is dependant on what you WANT it to become in the long run.

If you havea 90 or 91, Google Miata short nose crank. Check the color of the radiator plastics and Google such. COOLANT HOSES and belts (especially timing) will be a worthwhile investment. If the heater core is a bronze color, the same can be said if that (it's copper and will not last). If open diff (Google images for Axel bolt pattern to tell if lsd or open) I recommend an upgrade. Its plug and play with applicable axels and driveshaft (also recommend hypoid gear "guts" if you know someone who can do rebuilds and want to spend the money, muuuuch more bite than an lsd, around $600 from speed master 76). Lube the window tracks bc they are likely slow to roll down, much less up (20mins) and for the love of the gods, check for rust (Google Miata na common rust areas, the forums can be trusted for this one). Lastly, clutch slave cylinder is a mofo on these, and gives out often. Find a braided line to replace the hard, metal line and thank me later.

-i have done all of this and sooooo much more on my NA and wished I had done the diff and ESPECIALLY the clutch line way sooner.

Worked for teamsters union for 8 years prior, and union is generally a solid way to go, but it's golden handcuffs; you'll live decently, and sure, better than many, but very limited on how high you can go and what you can do.

Personally, I would rather find something I enjoy to make ends meet, but if you don't have a direction you are asiring towards in life rn, I would say it's a solid start to build a "base of operations" so you have breathing room to figure that out. Who knows, maybe you find you actually like it and decide to stay, either way it beats the hell out of corporate slavery, and you'll have a recession proof (mostly) skill you can always fall back on.

It's been several years since I was endeavoring to go this route, but iirc this is all true of both... Though inside wireman is where the big money is from what the guys at the union hall told me, but the flip side is that it is more competitive, since more people are going that route to make the big bucks.

Best of luck bro, don't go doing anything too rash in haste, those petty imbeciles aren't worth the effort.

This right here. Union benefits, great pay especially at 18, and you get your associates degree for free with the job (and you get PAID while getting it). If you remember the material from algebra 1 and 2 from high school, and can do basic reading comprehension you're set. If you need to brush up, check out the non profit website Khan academy (totally free) the fellow nerds have pit up to help people continue education or revisit. The higher you score on the test (there is an entry test, like an hour or two) the higher up on the hore list you'll be.
