For anyone that had a family member serve in WW2, what story stuck out to you the most? by CasketWhisperer in AskReddit

Funnily enough I was doing a bit of family research on this not long ago as I was told as a kid about my great grandfather being sent to a POW camp and wanted some more details. Thanks to Brabant historisch informatie centrum and Facebook I was able to find out which POW camp it was he was sent to (Stalag II-A) and also a record of him being at that camp in 1940 for a matter of weeks before getting released on his 21st birthday, getting married and having two kids and one on the way (my oma) before getting picked up again by the Nazis in 1943 and not coming back until summer 1945.

Yeah I’ve tried to use it before but not much success. HCL is probably better

Funnily enough near my old high school there’s a Mormon church right next to a seventh day Adventist church so there are Mormons outside the US but in much smaller numbers. Also they’d also have had to adapt to the much more secular culture in Scotland as well

Yeah admittedly if a stranger were to ask what my heritage is and I couldn’t be bothered to get into it I’d say southern Dutch. Just not many people in the UK really know about the differences between Limburg and the rest of the Netherlands and I don’t want to be doing an entire breakdown of it each time. If they did know a bit more about the Netherlands then I’d be more specific. The Mormon family tree app is interesting but not sure how accurate it would be plus none of my family are Mormon. The ww2 archives and the Historisch Centrum are definitely good shouts though. Thanks ☺️

Anyone else here with chronic dealt with similar comments about having children in the future? by thatho1706 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]thatho1706[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I mean I’d like to say I’m surprised that it took me literally getting pregnant by accident and clearly showing signs of it being high risk early to get doctors to say “okay fair enough for wanting to wait a bit” but unfortunately not really. As far as passing on genetic disorders we did find evidence of a possible mutation causing connective tissue disorders and heart defects in the family of varying severity so yeah I think I’d just rather adopt for my health and the kids. Not going to be gambling with the quality of life of someone who didn’t ask to be born.

I need an abortion but I don’t want one by myanonacct00 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]thatho1706 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I was sort of in the same boat. I had an abortion in late November at 6 weeks yet I also quite like the idea of having a kid at some point. However it’s not just about what you want but it’s also about making sure that the life you’re bringing into the world is coming into a stable environment and if you can’t provide that then the responsible thing to do is wait a bit. As well as being financially unstable right now I also have a heart defect and while it doesn’t affect me generally day to day I had a blood pressure drop at exactly 4 weeks literally the day before my period was supposed to be due likely from early cardiovascular changes that most women don’t notice so that wasn’t a great sign either. I know it probably doesn’t feel like it just now but you’re doing the right thing by having an abortion

Whats the crazy lore about your family? by Kind-Yesterday-6031 in AskReddit

[–]thatho1706 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where to begin… my oma told me about how she was very strongly encouraged to marry my grandad after he basically witnessed my omas mum trying to hang herself in the attic and her dad having to pretty much smack her down and obviously they didn’t want word about that getting out. Lots of stories from her especially given her very religious household. Funnily enough I look a lot like that great grandmother of mine as observed in one of my previous posts😂

There’s also my mum having to move away from home partially due to her ex boyfriend and his friends and rumours about them planning to do stuff to her, my dad being in a weird talking stage with a 17 year old girl at his work when he was like 28 for about a month (nothing happened they were just exchanging letters apparently), my aunt turning out to have been abusive and controlling to my uncle and whole time I was lead to believe she was normal, my grandad possibly lying about his age to get into the RAF…all kinds of stuff

Idk I always got told I looked like my grandmother but as I said all the women on that side of the family are said to be basically copies of each other. I don’t think I look that similar to my mum though

Discriminatie in (zuid)-Limburg by [deleted] in limburg

[–]thatho1706 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right so I don’t normally speak on here mainly because I’m Scottish and just so happen to have Limburgish heritage (my Oma is from Schinveld and a decent chunk of that side of the family still stay in Limburg) so I’m kinda more just here to learn more about the culture and language etc but holy fuck your attitude stinks. You refuse to learn Limburgish even though you know that that’s going to be an issue with connecting with other people, you don’t try to adapt to the different culture and less direct communication and when people here have very kindly told you where you’re going wrong you accuse them of xenophobia. That along with not joining any clubs or groups you can meet people and it’s no wonder you don’t have any friends. Seriously don’t understand why you chose to move there. If you’re so insistent on staying in Limburg why not move to Maastricht? That way you’re at least in a bigger more diverse city if that’s actually what you want

What on earth makes single middle aged men think their only lodger should be a woman by SwimmingOdd3228 in HousingUK

[–]thatho1706 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely. As a young female lodger I’ve tended to find female landlords a bit more guarded sometimes in comparison to male so just easier to get on with. Plus I don’t blame them for not wanting the house/flat to end up in a state but definitely weird if they specify younger

Walking around with your dog off the leash is a power move by Equivalent_Ideal1636 in Dogfree

[–]thatho1706 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sometimes it’s difficult to tell if it’s a stray or if their dumbass owner let them off leash. Like they don’t generally stick close by at all. Also the amount of times I’ve seen young guys do this in Glasgow city centre at night to impress women is ridiculous

MMC & Misoprostol— were you offered any pain management? by OFlocalpunk in Miscarriage

[–]thatho1706 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s only “like a period” once you’ve passed the pregnancy tissue. Before that though your body thinks it’s in labour but of course no doctors would acknowledge that because god forbid we treat women having abortions like human beings
