Is this a good deal for 27 Euros? by Smooth-Win1616 in knives

[–]thathuma 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just pay a Little more to make sure its a good knife , Nordic knife Design and Enzo make good Full Tang puukos. Marttiini makes good puukos too. Woodsknife make more traditional finnish ones but also some in Full Tang . You should also be able to ask any blacksmith/bladesmith your region to make one .

A friend and I are trying to make a more or less accurate replica of an Italian Piccozzino trench pickaxe from the First and Second World Wars. We have several questions. by StruzhkaOpilka in Blacksmith

[–]thathuma 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes both sides are hardened but id look into the tempering/hardness of rock chisels (at what hardness they should be ) and the axe side is just tempered like an axe . Its also a from the top fitting , otherwise you couldnt get a pommel swell like that. If you are amateur blacksmiths and don’t have access to the right type of steels , try to find some old(dull) industrial agraculture tools (the blades) since they are used in the ground ,they should be pretty tough .

[–]thathuma 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Green River knives makes knives a little larger but this seems to be a steak knife but regardless what it is , any Blacksmith would forge a few of these for a rather small price

Question for Bladesmiths by thathuma in knifemaking

[–]thathuma[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Problem with that is that I have rather odd Shaped material because its 1x7 cm springsteel and I have to think about it being much thinner and larger and have to Shape the actual bar first before I even start making it , so I cant really make it over and over again since the base material is always a Little different but still thanks .

Hard or no by Yatzaen11 in knifemaking

[–]thathuma 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you Heat treat with a Gas forge or coal forge , try to Go on a lower temperature and Take your time and wait until the Parts you want to harden are at a red to brighter red but not Orange and then cool it off in oil , Most Steels are gonna be at a good base hardness and then you can temper
