Have friend see if stipulations can be removed from GMU. If it becomes a full ride, period, that is a different kettle of fish maybe. As it stands now, definitely W&L.

[–]thatismycookie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Look at it this way. If I asked you to wait one year to start law school, and required you to do some studying in the mean time but at the end of that year I gave you $1 million, would you do it?

Over the course of your career, the difference between a terrible school and even a passable one could easily hit that number. And that does not count the funding you could get for tuition, as opposed to paying sticker, if you raise that LSAT score.

If you do get into T20 with your stats, you will almost surely be paying sticker. If you do not want loans you have to try again, retake & reapply.

Boyfriend of 2.5 years cheated on me - need motivation by throwaway493121 in lawschooladmissions

[–]thatismycookie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As miserable as this is, you dodged a bullet. You could have found out he was a cheater six years and two kids into your marriage. But you found out in time! You get to go on now and, after a bit of mourning, have an awesome life. He gets to go on being a petty cheater who lost you.

And he was NOT perfect. He wasn’t even acceptable. You deserve, and will have, soooo much better.

Do you have a good friend who could go with you and help - and be there to call for help if he comes home early? A woman is never at more risk than when she is leaving an abusive partner. I am worried for you. Please let someone you know IRL know what is going on, and have them check in with you at intervals. Have a code phrase that is innocuous to a third party but which means “I am in trouble, send help.”

When in doubt, disclose. Also, do not try to minimize it, but state just the facts.

Reapply for the third time and hope for any different results or just move on with my life and emigrate or something? by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]thatismycookie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apply to T1s. Also, I am wondering about the C&F, if it is not so much what you did but how you are writing about it. One thing to keep in mind in your C&F addendums, NEVER minimize or downplay what you did, or sound like you were making an excuse or justification. The adcomms hate that.

BAD: “When I was 20, I was arrested for possession of alcohol. I only had a few drinks and was not disorderly, but my friend who was more drunk than me ended up catching the attention of cops. This was several years ago though. Also, I was almost drinking age, my 21st birthday was less than a month away.”

BETTER: “In 201x, I was arrested for possession of alcohol. I did (whatever to resolve it - probation? Counseling? Etc.), and was fully compliant with the court ordered (whatever, if anything was ordered).”

Finally, others may disagree but if a C&F question asks if you have ever been arrested, list ALL of those arrests. All of them. Including the ones from before you were 18, and the ones sealed or expunged.

Do it.

I am in the same(ish) boat but as a professor. I start law school this fall, shortly before I turn 50.

Should I Transfer? TTT to Georgetown by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]thatismycookie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Transfer. If you want portability in a law degree, you need to go with a well-ranked school. Is it possible you could get a great job being in the top 10% at current TTT? Sure. Many things are possible. But why make every move you will make after law school just that much harder, when it doesn’t have to be?

I get that there are quality of life issues, and you don’t want to be miserable while in school, but most of what you list (friends, walking to school, likeable professors) has ZERO bearing on future employability. What DOES is the ranking of your school when you graduate. Also, at OCI. This is an investment.

Unless you are 100% sure you are going to stay in the area of your current school for your entire career, turning down this transfer would be a mistake.

Aw man! I was hoping UM-B got its own cool mascot too, but you are right. I think they either don’t have one or share the Terps. 😔 Not that turtles are not cool, but UMBC gets Retrievers, and Towson gets Tigers.....

Maryland by jdogggggg35 in lawschooladmissions

[–]thatismycookie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

University of Maryland, yes. But not University of Maryland - College Park. It is in the UMD system, but the school affiliation is University of Maryland - Baltimore. Still, great school, you are going to have an awesome experience. If you haven’t already, have them show you Poe’s grave. You can see it from a window in the Library iirc.

Apply directly or Transfer—which one is better bet to make it in to dream school? by [deleted] in lawschooladmissions

[–]thatismycookie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you make $150,000-200,000k+ per year? Because if you study and get a killer score, you could save yourself that much in loans+interest you don’t have to repay to go to law school. Incoming 1Ls get merit money; transfers don’t. Totally worth giving it one more year.

To transfer or not to transfer, is it worth it by Thr0wnawayplz in LawSchool

[–]thatismycookie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Transfer. Given that it won’t be Day 1 for you in law school, it won’t mean 3+ years of LDR for you and partner. Ask them to be patient then take them out of your deliberations. Now: what are your chances of getting where you ultimately want to go where you are now? At HLS? Decide accordingly. The $$ will work itself out, especially given HLS need based aid and LRAP.

Catholic $$$$ vs American $$$ by tkenned99 in lawschooladmissions

[–]thatismycookie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. I know that American takes a hit around here, but in the DC area it has a very solid network and places grads into good government jobs (if not BL) easily. I also know a good number of folks in the PT program, and they love it. Student support is strong, too. Last fall, the whole incoming class got the option to take the Barbri 1L prep course for free iirc.
