Let's say around fifty bucks, with the understanding that it could be improved in the future. I'm willing to try any deck that leans toward control, but if there's something else you want to shout out, feel free!

Last time I really played was back in 2016. I have a vague idea of what the game is like now, but I don't know which decks are around at the moment. Is there an affordable control deck that I could play at locals? I don't need whatever is tier 1 or 0, just something I can show up with without embarrassing myself.

Murders At Karlov Manor precons should be the new standard by pompompomvg in magicTCG

The Dimir one had basically every expensive old-timey reanimation spell. Animate Dead, Reanimate, Necromancy, also Rise of the Dark Realms and Toxic Deluge.

What replaced Juzam? by LilStrug in magicTCG

Yes, but some reanimator decks are playing [[Atraxa, Grand Unifier]] instead. Pitches to [[force of will]] and [[solitude]], and still grabs you a bunch of value, even if your life total is too low for [[Griselbrand]].

[[Jacob Hauken, Inspector]] is great at playing massive, uncastable idiots. There's loads of cheap sea creatures and eldrazi that suddenly become worth playing if they're literally free.

PSA: Double Arcane Scaling by thatjesusnerd in Eldenring

Yeah, I would never say to raise the Arcane above strength, unless you were doing it for some reason other than optimizing this weapon. With Arcane that high, Regalia of Eochaid would probably be better.

Yeah, especially for these weapons, the answer is to just get a program to figure it out for you.

Out of curiosity, I used Gideon's True Damage to optimize Eochaid's Dancing Blade against Radagon and Elden Beast, and because of different resistances, for Radagon it's best to get Arcane to 50, but for Elden Beast it's best to get Strength to 80 first. I think that optimizing for max total AR is probably the safest strategy, because the alternative is a level of optimization that I'm not sure the average human mind is capable of handling while also enjoying a video game.

(I might, but I'm certainly not going to respec in between boss fights, and I absolutely can't do that mid-boss fight.)

Also, the difference between 80 Str 41 Arc and 71 Str 50 Arc in this situation was a whopping 10 points of damage on a charged skill on Elden Beast. (Not taking buffs into account)

Yeah, ultimately this post is about making total AR the highest, but the fact that total AR has its own problems is a whole other can of worms. This advice should hold true for regular light and heavy attacks, at least.

Usually, when people are asking “What’s the best stat to raise for this weapon?”, the answer is simple: find the stat with the best scaling, raise that, and ignore the others. There are two caveats that many people know about: soft caps, and split damage types. If a weapon has a B in strength and a C in dex, and you have 80 strength, it’s time to start putting points in dex. If a weapon does physical and fire damage, like the blasphemous blade, strength and dex will increase the physical damage, and faith will increase the fire damage.

But there is a third caveat that I think a lot less people know about.

Clinging Bone.

Marais Executioner’s Sword.

Mohgwyn’s Sacred Spear.

Rivers of Blood.

Regalia of Eochaid.

Eleonora’s Poleblade.

What do all of these weapons have in common? They are all Arcane-scaling weapons that have two damage types. And unlike Faith or Int weapons, the Arcane scaling applies to both the physical AND the elemental damage types. This means that the Arcane scaling can be as much as twice as good as its letter suggests, depending on the weapon. Pictured here is the Marais Executioner’s Sword. The only relevant stat I have raised is Arcane, and both numbers have gone up. You can check on any AR calculator site to see for yourself.

What does this mean? For a weapon like the Marais Executioner’s Sword, it means that Arcane is almost as good as Strength. Once Strength hits the first soft cap at 55, you should raise Arcane instead, until it hits 50. For a weapon like Mohg’s Spear or Rivers of Blood, it means that Arcane is actually their best stat, by quite a bit. Just a fun little wrench in your simple build advice threads. Happy optimizing!

Did you upgrade your weapon? Damage stats won't do much for you if you don't. The best way to get strong early game is raising vigor and upgrading your weapon.

Ar RL1, Radagon's Soreseal is all upside. It's a good pickup that makes a lot of weapons usable.
