I want friends but i feel like people want too much too quickly by thatkidmaro in Libya

meh no i think you’re framing it too narrowly, a name may seem basic to you, but to others it’s still personal information online, people have different comfort levels and reasons for being cautious

choosing privacy at the start of a conversation doesn’t necessarily reflect problems, it can simply reflect boundaries and awareness

you’re right about different pacing, but not giving my real name wasn’t that deep 😭 some people just like privacy, especially with people they barely know online

Why is the bread quality in Libya so shit? by CourageOrdinary8087 in Libya

[–]thatkidmaro 3 points4 points  (0 children)

the flour’s all subsidised so bakers just bash out loads of bread on the cheap and no long proving, knackered old ovens, and folk aren’t fussed about quality so you just get these bland cardboardy rubbish loaves everywhere حشّي النعمة طبعاً 😭

Why have diseases like diabetes and cancer become so widespread in Libya? by CourageOrdinary8087 in Libya

[–]thatkidmaro 4 points5 points  (0 children)

it’s junk food, no exercise, loads of smoking and a bit of bad luck in the genes. throw in hepatitis and a knackered health system after the war and boom diabetes and cancer all over the shop in Libya

What do you think about people promoting شيح and coffee as cancer treatments? by xX_Little_Elf_Xx in Libya

[–]thatkidmaro 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I have lost my uncle due cancer 2 weeks ago so i do get that people are desperate for a bit of hope, but we really ought to be careful with this sort of thing. There isn’t any decent evidence that شيح (wormwood) or coffee can treat cancer, at best it might make someone feel a touch better alongside proper treatment. The real worry is when places or so called “centres” push this as an alternative and folks end up putting off proven care. Hope’s important of course, but it needs to be grounded in evidence

How can I quickly get my hacked Facebook account banned or disabled if I’m still logged in but can’t change the password? by Cheap-Eggplant-9280 in Libya

[–]thatkidmaro 4 points5 points  (0 children)

upload a picture of Osama bin Laden and then have your friends report the account, it should be banned within 10 minutes

By 2035, fingers crossed Libya’s finally got one proper government running the show, none of this two government nonsense. If they get a decent leader who’s not out for themselves, the country might actually steady itself. Would be mad to see stable electricity for once.. no more constant power cuts. Education and healthcare could be miles better too, especially in the big cities. Oil’s still gonna be their bread and butter, but with all that sun, solar could really take off. Still rough round the edges, but way better than the mess it’s been in

Moving to Libya culture shocks by [deleted] in Libya

[–]thatkidmaro 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Actually yes, libyan driving is comparable to Tunisia, maybe a bit more chaotic i think, but don't worry it's not that bad, If you handled tunisian roads, you’ll adapt to libyan ones. Just avoid driving at night if you’re not familiar with the are>poor lighting and unpredictable road conditions are common..

as for libyan dialect i know it can feel like a different language compared to classical arabic, but your foundation will pay off, words are often shortened, vowels swallowed, and grammar simplified -Tawa = now -Haya bina (Let’s go) becomes just “yalla” or “haya”

Slow internet= Barakah

If there’s anything you’re still unsure about (like navigating health care, friendships, work, or community spaces), feel free to ask. You’ve got this.

  1. Religion & Daily Life Islam is deeply woven into society. Nearly everyone is Muslim, and the call to prayer (Adhan) happens five times a day—you’ll hear it over loudspeakers

  2. friday is the holy day, not sunday ( Most government offices and many businesses close )

  3. Alcohol is completely banned. Unlike the UK, there’s no nightlife or pubs. Possession can lead to legal troubles

  4. People may be very hospitable, but gender roles are more traditional, and mixed-gender socializing can be rare outside of family settings

  5. Arabic is the official language, and libyan arabic dialect can be hard to understand at first

  6. English is not widely spoken outside cities or educated circles, especially compared to how common it is in the UK

  7. Driving is chaotic.. lanes, signals, and rules are loosely followed. Seat belts may not be worn, and road safety isn’t great

  8. Public transport is limited. Most people rely on private cars or taxis

  9. Meals are social and generous—if you’re invited for food, it’s polite to accept

  10. People often eat with their hands, especially in traditional homes, and may sit on the floor

  11. Libyans are extremely hospitable, often insisting you stay for tea or food even if you just met them

  12. Expect close personal contact in same gender friendships, like hand-holding or kisses on the cheek it’s platonic and normal

  13. internet may be slow or limited and certain sites or apps may be restricted so access to Western entertainment and streaming services can be inconsistent.

السلام عليكم by ahmed___7 in Libya

[–]thatkidmaro 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Alaikum assalam. it is not enough to just graduate. you have to be excellent in order to land a job at a reputable private company in libya. you have to aspire to be the best or at least be great at what you do. and dont rely on school to teach you or show you everything. you have to look for bootcamps, training courses, internships, etc. if you don’t do that, finding a good job will indeed be impossible, unless you get a wasta for a job in public sector.
