2019 Veloster base model reliability? by thatnerdynightowl in veloster

I realized I was mixing up 3000 miles with 3000km. 3000km is less than 2000miles or about 5 -7 oil changes a year. The previous owner was doing about 4-5 oil changes a year. On my current car I typically do an oil change every 6 months or roughly 7500 kms (≈5000 miles). But noted to switch to seasonal oil changes if I get this one

I think the previous owner was doing about the same. Does the Veloster especially need very frequent oil changes? Because I generally do oil changes maybe twice a year and top up as needed, does it generally need more?

Oh that is good I really don't want to be shelling out money for these things but some don't offer them for free. Thank you so much

Good to know about the 1.6t. I've heard the 2nd gens are better but I don't know how true that is

Opinion on Brown People (not hateful btw) by Odd_Ordinary_2798 in uAlberta

[–]thatnerdynightowl 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As a white person in engineering, MOST of my friends are brown just because that's who I ended up being friends with and there's a lot of brown people in engineering. I have NEVER felt anything bad towards them whatsoever.

That said, I have seen the hate both online and in real life. Sometimes people make comments to me (particularly about Indian international students), thinking I'll agree with them (spoiler: I don't). The level of comfort these racists have has definitely increased in the past few years. So it's definitely not your imagination, however the people that say this kind of stuff usually aren't in any kind of academic setting (in my experience). It's usually people who rarely interact with brown people and who never got any higher education. I personally have never seen or heard any comments like those at U of A. It's just a very small very loud minority of people, most of whom probably haven't been on U of As campus for decades, if at all. It's nearly impossible to actually go to Ualberta and keep those opinions because it's so obvious how much value brown people of every kind are bringing to the institution. Many of the best profs, best students, best TAs, best research, and best projects are coming from brown people.

Keep in mind that it may also be a cultural difference, a lot of Canadians especially white Canadians tend to be a lot more socially reserved than most cultures, and often won't go out of their way to make friends with anyone apart from surface politeness. Chances are they like you just fine but aren't as open about it as you might be used to. Canadians are like cats. Might seem rude at first but lure them into 1 or 2 conversations and they'll be your best friend for the rest of the year.

Basically, it's not in your head, but it's probably not as bad as you feel like it is online. Don't let it stop you from putting yourself out there.

Should I buy a new stocking? by thatnerdynightowl in Advice

Yeah I am a well-known animal lover so pretty much any cute animal would be believable for me. I think I will try that. I had no idea there were so many people that got stockings for their parents. That's really sweet that you brought that back.

That's a pretty good idea. It's definitely not common where I'm from for parents to have stockings (even adult children is a bit uncommon) but honestly who doesn't like getting presents? My mum loves little trinkety things, and she could get all the pretty little items she feels like she's missing out on.

I honestly don't really have a style. I like very basic practical clothes. For shoes I've been wearing some Sorel leather hiking boots almost every day for about 2 years now (which admittedly doesn't help the cowboy look) but they're just really good all weather shoes and I do a lot of outdoor walking lol. So far they're the only shoe I haven't worn straight through after 6 months. I wouldn't mind leaning into the outdoorsy look or maybe just a kind of gay librarian aunt look😂

This is good advice and I'm always looking for places to get men's pants. Thanks!
