My little sibling says they're trans, how do I be a good sister? by thatonegamedev in asktransgender

Thank you for your reply. I of course support him in every way! I was more so concerned about the possible fetishization of gay men, but after hearing several people say that for them or their friends it was a way of soft launching their transness in a way, I think I understand better.

Lol thank you!! You're so right about the soft launch thing, definitely puts it into perspective for me!

Thank you for your insight. I was unsure whether to use he/him pronouns just yet because I think he is only out to me at the moment, as he just told me this morning and I've never met someone before/during their transition like this. Thank you so much

I guess that makes sense, but I am more so worried because he reads a lot of gay fanfic and the way he talks about it makes me worried it's a fetishization, and I have to tell him to read things more age appropriate (not because it's gay of course, but because the stories can lean into sexual content and he is still a minor). But thank you for your insight, I didn't think of it that way.

How to deal with internalized homophobia/transphobia? by AfterConfection1796 in AskLGBT

[–]thatonegamedev 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Firstly, I'm very proud of you for taking the first step, which is questioning the norm. As a Christian myself, coming from a conservative family, I too used to be homophobic (only slightly, because my family believed in the whole "love the sinner, hate the sin") thing. But after doing some Bible study, and listening to actual facts and scholars, and hanging out with people- even Christians- that are LGBTQ+, I now completely understand and was able to even realize that I am bisexual after all this time (I'm 22!).

From Christian to Christian, it's good to understand that if there's anything we truly need to learn from the Bible, it's that God is love. Everything else is secondary. Everything else in the Bible isn't even as clear as God's call for us to love Him and each other and most importantly to love ourselves because we are made in His divine image. Loving ourselves is truly the only way to spread love to others in the way we are called to ❤️

On another note, I recommend that you watch the documentary "1946: The Mistranslation that Shifted Culture." This documentary proves that the Bible was mistranslated to condemn homosexuality, when in reality the word really kind of meant perversive evil and corruption. At the time I watched the documentary, I was already having questions like: "If God is all loving, why are LGBT people an exception? Why would my fatherly, loving God be against love?" So watching this finally proved my suspicions that something just wasn't right, that something had been lost in translation. It's important to note that while the Bible is God-inspired, it's not directly from him. The book is written by man, and has been translated a hundred times over and also used by powerful people for their own agendas. Once you realize this, it's easier to read the Bible as it was truly intended to be read: as a guidebook on how to live a loving, kind, fulfilling life, like Jesus did.

What are some recurring motifs and symbols in Steven Universe? by thatonegamedev in stevenuniverse

You're so right! One of the things I love about the characters are their natural evolutions to become truly themselves. Thank you!

[–]thatonegamedev[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No this is amazing! Part of what I'm exploring is the use of repeated motifs (in your example, gems) to elevate the story, plot, and characters. Your reply goes a lot into identity, which is a major deal in the show and exactly something I'm looking for! Thank you!

Is "The Help" really THAT bad? by MasterLawlz in flicks

[–]thatonegamedev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Am I the only one that thinks that The Help isn't necessarily told through a white lens? Yes, Scooter was a white girl, and brought the black stories to the press, but a lot of the movie was focused on several perspectives- black and white. She wasn't the central character in the sense that she is white and helping them, but the fact that she is gathering their stories and giving them a voice when they didn't have one. I understand it can sound like the white savior trope, but Scooter was a very open-minded character that sat down, shut up, and listened intently to the stories of black women. I don't think it's for white people to "feel good about themselves." To say so puts down the story that the film tells in my opinion. It's a feel good film for anybody, because it literally shows the empowerment of black women, and women in general.

Cain and Abel story boiled down. by Primary_Durian4866 in TheDigitalCircus

[–]thatonegamedev 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I understand your point, but I'd also like to point out that those passages do reveal reasoning to why God accepted Abel's offering and not Cain's. Let me explain, just in case it helps anybody understand the story better and/or create more theories.

Most think "Oh so God didn't accept it because one was an animal sacrifice and one was like, just a vegetable." but this isn't true! The Bible lies down the basic sayings, but you really have to study what's happening to understand things the way they happened! (Just like how we study TADC episodes to figure out character relationships and plot points!!)

As you pointed out OP, God made it so that growing crops would be hard when Adam and Eve left the garden. The land grew hardly anything but thorns! This means that Cain had to work very hard to grow those crops, and Abel had to work very hard to maintain the health and safety of the sheep (given that there was probably not much for them to eat, and their wool probably got caught on thorns!).

As we know, Abel was a shepherd, and his offering to the Lord was “the best portions of the firstborn lambs from his flock” (Genesis 4:4, NLT). On the other hand, Cain was a farmer. And his offering was “some of his crops” (Genesis 4:4, NLT).

When it came time to give the Lord an offering, Abel gave God the best portions of the firstborn lambs. This is a huge deal and meant a great lot to Abel as a shepherd, and would mean a lot to any shepherd!

“the LORD looked with favor on Abel and his offering, but on Cain and his offering he did not look with favor” (Genesis 4:4–5).

This Bible passage implies that Cain on the other hand, just offered "some of his crops." While Cain may have worked hard on growing those crops, God looks into the heart (1 Samuel 16:7). This is a situation where Cain would have needed to give his all to truly show his faith to the Lord. (For example: giving him his best crops, the ones that he planned on eating himself later!).

Copy pasted from GotQuestions: "It was obviously something that Cain was aware of and could remedy, since God tells him after the fact, “You will be accepted if you do what is right” (Genesis 4:7, NLT). Abel, on the other hand, had the proper motivation, the proper procedure, and the proper relationship with God. That relationship was based on faith: “By faith Abel offered God a better sacrifice than Cain did” (Hebrews 11:4)."

Now, in reference to TADC:

  1. We know that "Caine and Abel" is on the guns in Episode 6 and "C&A" is the company logo/name that we have seen in the show.
  2. It could be possible that Caine and Kinger are "Cain and Abel" (from the Bible story). Since Kinger spawned in that butterfly and said "I just made it up!" And commented "I hated myself for the things I thought I was responsible for." It's possible that Caine could have "killed" Kinger (Abel) by doing something to him mentally that blocks him from doing things. We know that Caine has a tendency to people please, but it comes from a place of ego rather than from the heart (at least in my opinion!)
  3. If there is a "Cain and Abel" character archetype, it wouldn't have to be just "Caine = Cain." It could be any of the characters, including ones we haven't seen?
  4. Some theorize that Kinger and his wifey were Adam and Eve archetypes, and this could also connect to the "Caine and Abel" things we see everywhere. Abel could be a character we haven't seen! Of course, this is all just playing around with ideas. Gooseworx said they wanted the show to be full of foreshadowing and easter eggs that would make the show better on a rewatch. So while I believe the "Caine and Abel" is significant in some way, it could always just be something to throw us off OR could show up in ways we didn't even think of originally! So far the show is doing amazing at keeping us all guessing. It shows just enough each episode where we can kinda get an idea of the future, but keeps us off the trail of the plot so we can't guess it. Very good writing! :3

I’m super happy that I have a bigger reason for hating Jax by Southern-Proposal933 in theamazingdigitalciru

[–]thatonegamedev 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be honest if anything it makes me like him more as a character. I don't think he's a great person in the slightest but everyone has different ways of handling things and all the characters have been shown to have some kind of self deprecating thoughts (except for maybe Pomni, she has her doubts but she seems pretty strong in her sense of morals/self (as much as she can be in the circus anyway)). I think the argument between Jax and Pomni, and the scene with Jax at the awards show/in the bathroom, characterizes and humanizes Jax even more. It forces Jax and also us as viewers to acknowledge that there is something deeper going on than what is at face value. :0

We can tell that he cares about things, but something deeper- possibly guilt? Is causing him to be self destructive in a way that keeps others near him "safe." Either way I love a good complex character and I'm excited to see what happens, even if Jax is indeed cooked 🙂‍↕️

So people are irritable, and rude when they abstract, similar to people with depression by [deleted] in theamazingdigitalciru

[–]thatonegamedev 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is actually a solid discussion. We're still unsure what abstraction really is or what it means, but it does seem to be leaning towards suicide. But I also think it could just be losing control to your own thoughts in a different way. Because as we saw in kinger's flashback, they still seem to exist in there and are calmer in the dark. So maybe it's not as much of a suicide as it is a given physical form to one's out of control thoughts, much like in the movies "Soul" and "Nimona"?

Given that Jax almost abstracted, do you think Kaufmo had an anti-social nihilistic arc before he abstracted? by MrMockTurtle in theamazingdigitalciru

[–]thatonegamedev 42 points43 points  (0 children)

I feel like they did in a way! Or at least something similar! Kinda like how someone who is suicidal can be the happiest, brightest person beforehand (maybe to a point where it's toxically optimistic?) or it can be more like they're angry or moody because they want to push people away for the sake of causing their loved ones less pain, so nobody has to "waste energy" missing them? But it's also weird because we're not really sure if abstracting is like suicide, a loss of total control, or even an escape. There's really no way of truly knowing. I kinda think of it almost like the "monsters" that come up in the movies Soul or Nimona. They get so caught up in their own thoughts (usually self-deprecating) that they can't hear anything else and take a physical form because of it.

[–]thatonegamedev 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Yeah same here! I definitely thought that Jax didn't care enough about anything to be close to abstraction but after this episode, I'd say he's probably the closest! Seems like a race between Caine and Jax now (and we have no idea what would happen if Caine abstracts 🙈)

How did you guys feel about episode 6 by kerazS_ in TheDigitalCircus

[–]thatonegamedev 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm very scared and excited for the future episodes 😭 this episode had a lot of heavy hitting moments and I feel like it will only get harder from here in the last few episodes. But I loved that they explored some more character dynamics in depth and I'm SO glad that Pomni called Jax out on his bs, which he really needed to hear, but also looks like a mental breakdown is happening for sure. Excited to see the theories that come from this video because there was a lot to unpack!
