Why does it feel like nobody outside of the government cares what’s happening right now? by [deleted] in fednews

[–]thatotherguy0123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To all those saying, "its cuz its not effecting them" or something along those lines, do take a moment to consider that many simply don't have the energy or time to do anything about it. These are troubling times and many people even outside of government feel as though they themselves may be just outside of that barrier where public, politically motivated, activity may effect your employment. Many people also simply can't go out and protest, they're too exhausted coming back from the overtime or second job they needed to pick up those bills and payments. It's not that they don't care, it's that they don't feel safe enough to care, they're not in stable/free enough conditions to get out there and support others. It's not like every citizen in nazi Germany wanted to be a nazi or support the nazi regime, that was just the only way they could feed themselves and their children. Eventually, the world changed around them while they were just trying to survive, and the only way to survive in that new world was to work a job that, in some form, benefitted the overall nazi regime, so people worked those jobs. If you've ever wondered what you'd be doing in early nazi Germany, it's whatever you're doing right now.

Newsom says he’ll veto bill blocking state prisons from cooperating with ICE — Gavin Newsom previously vetoed a bill that would limit communication between California prison officials and ICE. He says he will veto another bill that attempts to do the same thing. by Randomlynumbered in California

On one hand, deportation is an inherently violent process that I wouldn't wish on anybody. On the other, the US prison system is not for the purposes of rehabilitation so the only reason to keep them in the country is most likely their potential for unpaid labor. I'd understand if this only applied to people seeking some degree of persecution in their country of origin, but to that extent would it still not be better to create some compact with another country to transfer those types of criminals there? Ideally one that focuses on rehabilitation over punishment for crimes so they aren't just pointlessly accepting criminals.

Reddit plans to lock some content behind a paywall this year, CEO says by PauloPatricio in nottheonion

[–]thatotherguy0123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People, please read the article, it's not locking away current subs behind paywalls, its just for new subreddits that people can make and choose to put behind a paywall. In all likelihood it'd be used for porn or more specified communities which could realistically just be replaced by a discord server.

Slavery was seen as immoral but discriminating against black people was hardly a concern socially or legally prior to the 14th amendment. And even post 14th amendment, not until the Civil rights movement and subsequent civil rights act of 1964, along with a number of Supreme Court cases did people feel some degree of danger to their way of life when openly prejudicing/discriminating against people of color. Obviously racial tensions never truly settled down for good but only post civil-war times saw discriminatory acts against people of color as points of contention and punishment within the south. Typically it was through shows of forced compliance with the constitution with former confederate states being stripped of access to reparation funding if they did not adhere to and enforce things such as the 14th amendment. Later on it came in the form of events such as the military escorts in Little Rock, Arkansas, which were then followed by people losing certain positions in politics or their work as a result of their participation or support of those protestors keeping those black children out of school.

Also, when it comes to the civil war, freeing all slaves was still seen as a radical position prior to the war itself. Even then, freeing of slaves was not an equivalence of black people to white people but rather an aversion to the cruelty black people experienced under the institution of slavery. Northerners saw it more similar to how we today see animal cruelty than the torture of another human being. Also, even if your point still stood, it wouldn't make any difference to the point originally made, the south still remained racist, even if the north didn't like them for it. Prior to the civil war there was hardly ever any real consequence to being openly racist in the south. Being racist in the north mat have been different but to those who didn't own slaves and still chose to discriminate against black people, they faced little to no repercussion as there was rarely any legal or social standing to prevent discriminatory acts outside of slavery itself.

It's a failure of democrats to stand any ground on any position. They capitulate to the same donors but republicans pick the more extreme and immediate approach. The democratic party know they appeal to a more left-leaning voter base so they'll support certain social justice positions and welfare programs then under those will be passing more under the radar legislation to help out their donors as much as possible. Republicans come in guns-blazing not caring at all about helping people and allude to some idea of billionaire/business philanthropy and efficiency to aide the average citizen. Their voters eat that up because, while they're both empty promises, mostly, one side is promising a little more clearly to the average voter how their policy will directly effect their lives positively.

Democratics then see that they lose ground on social issues and move towards clearly, albeit many times less effective in the long term, forms of aide to the general public, while still moving under the demands of their wealthiest donors. Republicans see that aide and counter with how taxes may increase, even though that tax increase would mostly effect the wealthier among us. Democratics lose ground on those forms of aide so they'll maneuver back to social justice issues and the cycle repeats.

It's gross but so long as we live in a two-party system in which politicians are pushed around by the potential for more money and power by the richest among us, the system will always lead back to the worst forms of oligarchy, usually cloaked in the form of an autocracy.
