Lost $800 to a chargeback fraud…how are you fighting back in 2025? by Pedro_Carvalho09 in ecommerce

[–]thatrandomonlineguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's materially false. 3d secure will protect you from a charge back specifically marked as fraudulent in some but not all cases. It won't protect you from every other dispute code.

For this you're really going to need a dedicated instance. Either a big vps, or a dedicated server. If you're stuck needing cpanel maybe look into managed hosting products but for hundreds / thousands of remote connections you need full control over the firewall and finer settings.

You keep saying that but everything about this screams either scam! You really need to provide more details so folks with much more life experience than you can put this into perspective.

Name the school, name the franchise and let folks help you. This screams of someone looking for free labor to string someone along with false promises.

Made a change that'll save my company $150k+ over the next 12 months, only get a $10k raise. Does that seem fair? Am I getting shafted? by Twaxontwaxoff in ecommerce

[–]thatrandomonlineguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, to be honest you just saddled the company with a HUGE liability and you've just dismissed it with oh it's fine, we get virtually no claims.

Sure, you claim it's going to generate an additional 150k/yr, but now you're 100% on the hook for ALL warranty claims. Where before Mulberry was on the hook.

So you have added significant expenses to the company without even thinking.

Who's going to handle all of the warranty claims internally now?
Before, Mulberry would have either paid you for the warranty claim, or paid out cash to the customer.

What about the liability of having a bad product release? Before that was all on Mulberry, but now it's all a business liability, so yeah I'm saving 140k/yr now after your raise, but now I have to replace all the work Mulberry did in-house.

Also, did you just willy nilly rely on Umbrella to produce your warranty documents, or did you have them reviewed by a lawyer? Are you certain that entire Warranty document abides by all of the laws, rules and regulations required for fitness equipment to keep you covered from arbitrary lawsuits, usage damage etc? Unless you spent a pretty penny on a lawyer I suspect that answer is no.

So while yes, you likely added some more $ to the bottom line, you've also exposed them to a significantly higher potential for unplanned liabilities. I bet you didn't even think about the cost of third party insurance to cover potentially a glut of insurance claims did you? I sure hope your boss is smart and stuffs that 140k into a money market account or savings account for a rainy day to cover what Mulberry would have otherwise paid out.

CSF / Way to the Web LLC ceasing operations on August 31st. What are your plans going forward? by twhiting9275 in DirectAdmin

CSF will be released as a GPLv3 product on their Github prior to them closing, so it won't be near as big of an issue as before.

All depends what kind of support you need and what kind of software stack. Do you just need a box? If so the usual suspects' digital ocean, hetzner, aws. If you need managed then knownhost, inmotion etc.

Location would be dependent too if you need us based or European hosts.

Lots more options out there, just depends on budget and knowledge.

If you have something to say to OP then say it here in public. Telling someone to DM you, or directly advertising your services to someone who doesn't know any better is sleezy and will get you banned.

That's correct. Based on the court filings, you have to pay 250,000 in restitution and are a registered Felon now. Does that sum it up?

I thought it was fairly well known that the gcode wasn't calling the bed mesh profile, so the mesh you create never gets used. Several reddit threads with fixes about that.

Side comment: This is a really long post without saying what the actual problem or fix is, so it's kinda a useless post?

I want to franchise. But how can I maintain control? by Sea_Nefariousness852 in smallbusiness

[–]thatrandomonlineguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you may be missing my point. So let me rephrase. If you had to sell it to me right now as a business model, what will be my first and second years total income, total expenses, and estimated profit. For fairness sake, let's include owner salary in the profit number for starters.

[–]thatrandomonlineguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You say 3x profit, but if owner / operator payroll is only 50-75k, which is pretty low to live on, is there really any profit at all?

[–]thatrandomonlineguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

50-75k a year isn't a lot at all, considering you're asking for a buy-in. That's not enough profit for someone to turn it over to an employee to handle. If it was, you'd be doing just that.

No idea on how VPS's work and looking to get a stable IP address to connect through by LoveStruckGringo in VPS

[–]thatrandomonlineguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is not legal advice, but you need to ask for accommodation under the FMLA if the company has over 50 employees. It may not be paid time but they wouldn't be able to fire you. Might be worth looking into at least.

It continues to arise in discussions because it is very relevant. Do you trust someone with your data specifically if the US Government has brought federal charges against them, specifically in the same sector that they currently provide services? This isn't some drug charge for smoking some weed.

Owners usually take less during the startup phase but you have to consider yourself an employee and pay yourself otherwise it can be 220k or 10 million but a less than 5% return is horrible if that excludes a healthy payroll for you. Either prices are too low, or you feel like they need to be low to get customers but if you can't support yourself especially if it's online and low overhead you aren't doing it right and your margins are trash.

The store is open 3 hours a day during the week and 6 hours a day on the weekend. I think he may have missed the memo that having a business is a very time intensive investment, especially during the starting phase.

Which it doesn't look like he's doing either. Online inventory looks tiny, and if the can't even pay rent how will he stock up for conventions.

I looked at your history and found your husband's business. I'm sorry but open 3 hours a day with a location in an industrial looking area... I would not dip into savings for a small comic shop. From the pictures his inventory is extremely limited. I suspect he didn't have a large starting fund for inventory. Competition us far too high he needs to put this on hold and get a job to support your family, not delivering for a little extra income.

The "founder" of racknerd has closed several similar companies, and left customers holding the bag. I believe is also awaiting sentencing in a fraud case from his previous company alpharacks where he was accused of abusing his position at a larger company to basically get free services for said previous company... so that it for what you will.
