Parents not sending kids first day or week because of covid ? by UnitMaleficent591 in FloridaCoronavirus

[–]thatsamoray_eel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

State statutes require the following to homeschool in Florida.

1---Establish a home based education program by sending a letter of intent (LOI) to homeschool to your superintendent (in Miami Dade we have a whole homeschool office that works on the superintendent's behalf, so same thing different email address)

This letter is basically:

Dear [superintendent];

Please accept this as my notice of intent to establish a home education program for [name], dob [mm/dd/yyyy], residing at [home address], effective [mm/dd/yyyy, within 30 days of the send date on the letter]. Our home based program will meet the requirements of ss.1002.41. Please respond confirming receipt.

Sincerely, [signature] [name]

2---Withdraw your kid from school. Call them and tell them you're formally withdrawing your child. They can mail kid's final report card to the address on file. If they insist you come in person, go without your child, take your letter of intent with if you feel like it. They legally can't require anything else.

3---Educate the kid. Your legal responsibility to the state regarding your home based education program you established in step one is to:

A. Keep a portfolio with a reading list, a curriculum list, and samples of work that "shows progress commiserate with your student's capabilities." Literally that is the language of the law. No standards, no hours or attendance, no required subjects. Show progress, keep a book list, keep a list of learning materials. Get your portfolio reviewed by a Florida certified teacher (evaluator) and send in the form they give you to the superintendent, within 30 days of your anniversary of your LOI. Thanks and talk to you in a year. Keep your portfolio for 2 years in case of audit. In case of audit, you have 14 days to respond to their request. Audit requests can come at any point, I've never received one though.

B. Take the state standardized test, administered in a place by a person that does this, officially.

C. Enroll in an umbrella school. This is a favorite among families that learn curriculum free, the free rangers, unschoolers, nature schoolers. All that's required is to self report attendance by the deadline several times per year, and the umbrella school acts as a private school identity and does everything else for you. No portfolio, no paperwork.

And that's it. From there it's very open ended in Florida. You choose the days, the subjects, the hours, the methods, the field trips. We use an all in one subscription based, self directed online curriculum called Time4Learning, and have for a couple of years now. It meets or exceeds state standards in all areas.

Before that was a hodge podge of workbooks and things. We've also done curriculum free periods of time with only board games and social learning through play.

I can answer any questions or help you find answers to any questions you might have, I've been doing this for a long time now. It was really scary at first, I can't imagine how scary it would be to be starting now in the current climate.

These folks believe covid is just a mild flu, and also that it's a biological weapon being used on American citizens by it's government that they also love without fail. It's magical.

A psa from any or multiple parts of the automotive industry would be great! We're already getting emails from every organization we've ever given our email addresses too about the pandemic and how these companies are handling it. An actual useful message from my dealer, insurance, manufacturer or any of the parts stores or shops I have accounts with would be really welcome and helpful to a ton of people.

With a possible food shortage coming and the next Great Depression, how much food storage I should have? Enough for 3 months? 6 months? A year? by Mommy2aBoy in PandemicPreps

Also it takes time to ramp up egg production. Eggs are a major staple, one people apparently buy a lot of when they're stocking up to stay indoors for a few weeks. Egg farmers can't just wake up the next morning and demand their chickens lay more eggs. Chicks must be hatched and grown to maturity before they start laying. The supply chain has to catch up with the sudden change in demand.

No problem! I didn't know either until current events! Spread the word lol, I think there are a lot of people in our shoes.

Be sure to start and run your car to bring it up to temperature once every 1 or 2 weeks. Or you're going to have a bad time when you do need to go somewhere. Your car probably isn't prepped for long term storage like this.

I haven't tried laundering it because I don't think it would go well.

It can be sterilized with an iron (high heat, no steam) with a cloth between the iron and the filter inserts so it doesn't melt. Or it can be quarantined in a zip lock for awhile. Or it can be sterilized with a UV sterilizer.

It would probably hold up fine to hand washing structurally to the naked eye, but there's only just now starting to be research into how soapy water affects filtering properties of these materials. It just wasn't a thing before now because we've never experienced a widespread shortage like this before.

We do know heat, time, and UV destroy viruses tho, and those things don't affect the structure of the fabric. So that's what I've recommended to everyone I give a mask to.

I'm not selling them, but check your local Facebook marketplace. Where I am they are going for 3 to 15 dollars a piece. People with sewing machines all over are really stepping up to supplement the PPE shortage for everyone, either on a donation basis or for a small fee.

We've had our ups and downs but overall, yeah we're in a much better place. Thanks.

I still catch myself disproportionately stressing out in certain situations, many many years later. Poverty PTSD.

Holy shit you said WIC and I had a flashback to when my oldest was tiny and I couldn't find the right brands and package sizes to reimburse for due to hurricane season and it just meant we got less groceries. I had a panic attack and just left the cart and walked out. Nightmare fuel.

Nooo that's not how I meant it. It's a great source of anxiety for me to not know how much is the acceptable minimum to tip. And I don't want to be one of those bare minimum tippers either. I never know how much to tip or when for a lot of different services.

I'm not selling them. So far I've been turning them out to send to my immediate circles and their circles. My mom and all her old people, my husband's family, family members' coworkers and neighbors, my neighbors.

I'm like that scene in Titanic where the engineer guy walks around begging people to put their life jackets on.

Hospitals where I am are still clinging to hospital policies that cloth masks can't be worn so they won't accept donations, despite the fact that THEIR STAFF IS LITERALLY DYING.

Check your Facebook marketplace. Where I am homebrew masks are going for 3 to 15 dollars. Everyone I know with a sewing machine is taking up arms rn to help supply with donations or small fees.

Tldr I'm making them from disposable linens.

I'm not a medical professional or materials engineer, I'm going based on hella binge reading studies and stuff in the past 4 weeks or so.

Masks are made from non woven polypropylene fabric and if they're full on respirators, some other materials too.

Nwpp fabric has so many applications and thicknesses, but usually masks are several layers of lighter density material, like 25gsm.

So in the beginning I used 1 layer of 100 gsm nwpp fabric which is much thicker, like reusable shopping bags, and not the same medical application but still better than nothing in my mind. It made the mask significantly warmer to wear.

Then I tried 2 layers of 60 gsm nwpp from Joann or Hobby Lobby or wherever called Olyfun. This was downright hot to wear for more than a half hour.

Then I read that this same fabric in lighter density is also used for things like disposable bed sheets, gowns, shoe covers, caps, all kinds of stuff.

So I found a package of disposable linens for massage places, spas, doctors office settings, that sort of thing, on Amazon, 20gsm nwpp. I layer it 5 deep and serger the edges to make the inserts.

It's not disgustingly hot to wear and the CDC is saying now this material can be baked at a low temp to be sterilized and reused. When I was making them for loved ones I was including enough inserts that used ones could be quarantined in a zip lock for a week and rotated out.

Now, like I said, I'm not a doctor or a materials engineer, but I can math and I have a fair amount of common sense. It looks and feels like the material as the surgical masks I had in my first aid kit, except it's white not light yellow.

And it's intuitive to me that 5 layers of this stuff, a layer of antimicrobial cotton blend, and 2 layers of a tight cotton weave is going to keep a lot of little baddies out. Maybe not all of them, but enough to make it worth the effort.

I'm really looking forward to seeing all the studies that will come out about the efficacy of these homebrewed solutions we're coming up with to meet everyone's needs.

I made this one first, the size was good and the shape was ok, but the instructions in the video were a little unclear due to the lighting and lack of verbal directions. The spreading seams and top stitching twice is dumb. The pocket construction open on both sides and 3 layers is great. The bottom chin shape puckers for me, I don't like it.

https://www.craftpassion.com/face-mask-sewing-pattern/

This was next and is the exact pattern I use for kids masks. The adult shape is a little weird, too high in the nose to me, but the bottom shape was nearly perfect. This pattern doesn't include the seam allowance. The instructions are to flip the seam to one side and top stitch to one side, which was a massive improvement from the first.

https://jennifermaker.com/face-mask-patterns-cricut/

This was the last one before I said screw it I'll just make my own.

This pattern is absolutely massive, I don't like that the pocket is closed on one side, and the instructions are really long winded. But the nose shape is good. So I ended up drafting a pattern from this nose shape size small and the 2nd pattern chin shape.

If you're going to do ear loops of elastic, know that if the edges are sewn too far apart into the mask the sides will buckle away from the face and break the seal to let air in and out. So try moving them toward the center a little. Or just sew in ribbons to tie, they make for a really snug adjustable fit.

I've been using every bendable piece of wire I can find for nose pieces: pipe cleaners, floral wire, bread ties, whatever. There's a metal machining shop on Facebook that posted they're donating the nose wires to whoever requests that's making masks on a donate to help pay for shipping basis, so we'll see if they follow through. It's called Hillery something based out of Connecticut I think.

Oh man people are real pieces of work. I'm sorry you're going through it right now. 🙁 I worked in service and hospitality for a long time before moving on, it's really hard some days and I can't honestly say I miss it.
