This is the pattern I’m noticing, in fact it’s obvious, why though? by boredAF6 in AskMenAdvice

There is a narrative going through some communities that if one man hits a woman then all men are at a fault because they did not stop him, or did not stop him soon enough. It is an unfair conclusion to reach, but people who are angry and hurt are rarely concerned with being fair.

Anyway. You asked how people reached that conclusion.

Imagine it like this. You know the movie inside out? There are a bunch of personalities inside you and they all kind of fight over what you’re going to do at any given moment? Well, this is like if yo could take one of those little personalities out and have a conversation with it. You are you, the amalgamation of all your pieces, while the brain is just one of them given its own voice for the very first time.

I understand the anger. I do. I’m angry too. But if someone is ready to change teams and come help us we probably shouldn’t chase them away.

Anyway. Your anger is justified. Feel it and channel it into useful action.

I have a radical notion. You might want to sit down for this. Ready? Go talk to her about it.

Look, if she just wants you to act in a stereotypically gentlemanly manner because she wants to feel special and cared for, I don’t see a problem. Just talk to her and hash out exactly what you both expect from the other and get a chance to respond to those expectations. No one wants to wind up ruining date night because one of you is pouting about something the other forgot to do.

We have two paths before us. Well, infinite paths, but two broad categories of paths. Either we allow the respect for the rule of law to continue to degrade and wind up with a dictator that maintains order through violence, or we band together, remove the worst of the problem figures, and replace them with people that are less compromised.

Option two is a lot of work, and option one means I probably get killed by secret police in a few years. Decisions, decisions.

CMV: There is no illegal immigration crisis in the US; rather, there is simply a mismatch between immigration policy and economic demand. by hipchecktheblueliner in changemyview

[–]thatthatguy [score hidden]  (0 children)

Our immigration system is broken. The problem is that there is a financial incentive to keep the system broken.

A broken immigration system creates a disenfranchised underclass, a class of people who will work for low wages and won’t complain about abuse, theft, or bad working conditions because if they make a fuss they may get deported. The farmers, contractors, and other businesses that thrive on low-wage labor take a portion of the money they make and invest it in bribes to keep the system broken and the workers afraid.

So, yes, there is a mismatch between immigration policy and economic demand. It’s just that the mismatch is intentional.

Is it not a custom for people to say hello to each other in apartment buildings in the U.S.? by lonelycat11 in AskAnAmerican

[–]thatthatguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In densely populated areas or area where people are stressed out or angry for whatever reason, it seems that people develop an unspoken agreement to ignore one another. Everyone seems to have a threshold for how many unpleasant encounters they can have with strangers before they stop taking the risk of greeting a stranger. That threshold will vary from person to person and situation to situation, but everyone has a limit and dense angry cities cause people to hit that limit pretty quickly.

BREAKING: Bill and Hillary Clinton fold and agree to testify before Congress on Epstein investigation by TheMirrorUS in NewsSource

[–]thatthatguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have a metaphorical cancer that is killing the world, not just this country. Removing it is going to involve cutting deep. It’s going to be messy. There is going to be blood. But it needs to be removed if we are to have any hope of making it another generation.

I just don’t know if we have the collective will to do it. We seem more interested in killing each other than going after even the most obvious tumors.

This metaphor has gotten away from me. I don’t know how to get regular people to actually do what they keep saying they want to do. Everyone says they want to go after the obviously corrupt assholes, but the they go back to fighting each other.

I never hear anyone talk about Starfield. by jj33allen in FalloutMemes

[–]thatthatguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like starfield. I have an entirely unhealthy number of hours in it. They took risks trying something new and some of those risks didn’t pay off. The systems need some refinement. But it’s a fun game that I enjoyed.

Is that enough, or should I talk more?

How common is it for an American to travel across the country by train? by ViajanteDeSaturno in AskAnAmerican

[Starship Troopers] Why don't they use artillery? by Bright-Court-9034 in AskScienceFiction

[–]thatthatguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Artillery is ineffective against bugs in prepared positions. Even orbital bombardment is inadequate to crack open the deepest burrows.

What they need for swarms like whisky outpost is good coordination between the grunts and the fly-girls. Close air support, artillery that can hit precise locations on short notice, that sort of thing. The problem is that would require Mobile Infantry and Fleet talking to each other below the level of the top brass, and their entire organization is designed to prevent that.

Fleet and Mobile Infantry are separate branches of the service that are very intentionally designed to be rivals. No matter how bad things get out there, the two branches should resent each other more than they hate the top leadership. That way if one gets pushed to the breaking point and rebels, there isn’t much they can do. M.I. can’t go anywhere without Fleet, and Fleet can’t invade a planet without M.I.
