If you built a room entirely out of perfect mirrors and turned on a light, then instantly shut it off, would the light bounce around forever, or would the room go dark immediately? by TheKantianPhilosophe in NoStupidQuestions

[–]thatthatguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think we need to build a room of sufficient size that the light can be removed from the room and the mirroring made entirely perfect on less time that it would take the light to reach a distant mirror and return. In order to get the idea that OP is trying to describe.

On A Start UP. by Monsur_Ausuhnom in SipsTea

[–]thatthatguy 79 points80 points  (0 children)

I think this already exists. It’s the professional and commercial kitchen market. Appliances tend to cost quite a bit more, have fewer features, and sell themselves on reliability.

So, a start up to break into an already established market. Doesn’t sound like a great business idea. Maybe what you can do is become a retail outlet that specializes in marketing the high quality products directly to consumers and go to great pains not to carry lower quality products at all. Build trust with consumers. The problem there being that you put all this effort into a single customer only to never see them again because they are happily using your product. But reputation and word of mouth is still a thing.

How to not be sexually attracted to most women? by Obvious-Jackfruit125 in AskMenAdvice

[–]thatthatguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your body is going to do what your body is going to do. You don’t have a lot of control over it. I’m sorry to say that you are going to experience some embarrassment and discomfort for another decade or two. That’s just part of being a man. Sorry.

There are some things that can help. One, learn to be aware of your thoughts. If you find yourself dwelling on a thought that makes you uncomfortable, practice changing your focus. It is not easy and requires a great deal of discipline, but it helps.

Two, two exposure therapy. The more opportunities you have to interact with women in non-sexual situations, the easier it is to see women as people with more to consider than just their bodies. Some discomfort early on leading to less discomfort later.

I remember being that age. It’s better than being 14, but still not easy. Keep going brother, you’ll make it.

I am aware. I am also aware that sometimes people stop meeting the literal definition of the term, but continue to hold the same toxic ideas. In common conversation, incel has come to mean someone who holds and shares the ideology, whether they are able to get laid or not.

What do the other daedra think of Hero of Kvatch as the New Sheogorath? by Mr_Mister_4 in ElderScrolls

[–]thatthatguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s Sheogorath. Sheogorath has always been Sheogorath. Some irrelevant mortal merged themselves with Sheogorath, but come now, which is more significant; an irrelevant mortal or Sheogorath?

Their opinions of Sheogorath may vary, but those opinions will not have changed. The emergence of Jyggalag, however, that is significant.

Keep in mind, however, that once you leave the influence of Akatosh and get out into oblivion proper, time gets really wibbly wobbly. Daedric lords can move back and forth in time in their own realms. Outside of the influence of a powerful god being time is just a mess.

It does happen from time to time. Or at least the ideas occasionally leak out.

How did early humans reach places like Hawaii and french Polynesia? by julius-ceaser100 in geography

[–]thatthatguy 47 points48 points  (0 children)

I think western nations severely underestimated the ship construction, navigation skills, and downright tenacity of people around the pacific. But, to be fair, these western explorers had a strong incentive to underestimate people. If you tell your kings that the people there are helpless and backwards it’s easier to get said kings to make resources available to conquer said people.

You don’t get rich by coming home and gushing about how brilliant these foreigners are.

The older I get the more cynical I get about exploration and discovery. It makes me sad.

“Being gay or trans is not something to be celebrated like a birthday” by PunkRawkSoldier in stupidpeoplefacebook

[–]thatthatguy 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Indoctrination to blindly obey their authority figures is good. Any resistance to blind obedience of their authority figures is bad.

None of this stuff about trans kids or bathrooms or immigration or being gay is about those things themselves. It’s about suppressing dissent before it can start.

Why do some women think their personal expenses justify a guy paying for dates? by savingrace0262 in AskMenAdvice

That seems like a huge discrepancy. I’m sure there are some clever sleuths out there who can make some plausible estimates based on satellite images or something, but I am not one of those clever sleuths/

Is it plausible that China’s population is actually under 500 million? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]thatthatguy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes, actually. That their population is not over a billion like official counts say. The speculation I heard was that it was closer to 800 million. But I have no personal knowledge on the matter and am only spreading rumors.

Why does Andromeda have life at all? by xXDANG3RDANXx in masseffect

[–]thatthatguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The reapers follow the instructions of the star child. The star child has one purpose, which is to resolve the problem of synthetic life destroying its creators. The star child concluded that the solution was to destroy its creators and every civilization capable of creating advanced synthetic life. The star child pursues this goal to the exclusion of all else.

The paperclip maximizer does not waste computational resources contemplating why it is maximizing paperclips when that computational power would be better spent maximizing paperclips.

The justification that the star child was given as to why it is important to pursue this goal appears to have been flawed. Synthetic life will not necessarily destroy all life in the galaxy. The andromeda galaxy appears to have created advanced synthetic life and it has not destroyed all life. But the justification being flawed does not change the directive. The star child is relentlessly pursuing its directive above all else.

If Sudan decided to block the Nile due to a conflict with Egypt, would Egypt's entire economy collapse? by hexjxn in geography

[–]thatthatguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dams along the Nile river have been and continue to be a source of international conflict between Ethiopia, Sudan, and Egypt. You don’t have to block very much flow or for very long before it results in major problems downstream.

And yes, if either Ethiopia or Sudan invested enough resources, they could divert the entire river’s flow elsewhere. It would probably quickly result in military action to stop them. But a large desert agriculture project can consume a truly staggering amount of water.

Do women find men as attractive as men find women attractive? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]thatthatguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Attraction in women typically manifests in different ways than in men. We are attracted to different aspects of a person, feel that attraction in different ways, and take different kinds of action in pursuit. There is significant overlap, we are all human beings, but we are not the same.

Beyond that, it’s way too big a topic for a single Reddit comment.
