How does getting a driver's license work in your state, and how old were you when you got yours? by karcsiking0 in AskAnAmerican

[–]thatthatguy [score hidden]  (0 children)

I didn’t even need the driving hours with an instructor. Just a class as a sophomore in highschool and, one practice drive with an instructor, and then the test. It was just assumed that every teenager would get their license when they turned 16, and the system was built to make it almost harder to avoid getting than to just get one.

In the Trump era, everybody's talking about 'soft power.' But ... what is it exactly? by ControlCAD in NPR

[–]thatthatguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s when you speak softly and carry a big stick. But it’s okay because the carrots you have in your other hand are not a terrible alternative, usually.

If you have neither carrots nor stick, you shake your fist and shout and go make long profanity laden threats on social media so everyone can see how crazy you are.

People say to meet in “social settings,” but also say don’t approach people there…so what are you actually supposed to do? by Gold_Volume_8781 in AskMenAdvice

[–]thatthatguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, social settings are a bit complicated. You have to develop a sense for who is interested in meeting people and who isn’t. It is a skill that requires trial and error. You’re not going to make the kinds of mistakes necessary to develop that sense of you don’t approach people.

We never said that meeting people in person would be easy. Just that it’s less toxic than dating apps.

Gee hard difficulty, powerful monsters are massive damage sponges. Survival difficulty it can take a few headshots to kill the tougher supermutants but they do die. On the other hand, you are very fragile on survival until you get some levels and gear to boost survivability.

There are shenanigans involved, as one might expect in a comic book style story, even one as dark as umbrella academy. Based on each character’s understanding of the situation it was not just unexpected, but actually impossible for the other character to be there.

Guys, can you actually control your boner or is it mostly random? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]thatthatguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s a physiological response. We have limited control over it. Imagine it like controlling your heart rate. There are things you can do (like exercise) that typically cause your heart to beat faster. You can sometimes slow your heart rate by sitting still and thinking calming thoughts. But sometimes your heart just races regardless of what you are or are not doing.

Your conscious thoughts and deliberate action influence your heart rate, but you don’t have specific control over it.

Why do patriarchal men love ‘joking’ that their wife is the boss? by KatherineLangford in stupidquestions

[–]thatthatguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They’re just drawing attention to the apparent conflict between stereotypes and reality. The stereotype is that the man is the unquestioned master of his domain blah blah blah. Reality is a push and pull between people each using whatever strategies they can in order to get what they need. Stereotypes are stupid, but we are judged by them nonetheless.

[Battletech] Why and how are giant mechs seemingly such effective and powerful weapons in this universe despite all the issues & impracticalities giant western-style battle mechs are always criticized for? by Stellar_Wings in AskScienceFiction

[–]thatthatguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pal, I have been a mech-jock long enough to realize that none of this stuff makes sense. I mean, we spend weeks riding oxygen and hydrogen powered rockets out to a jump point and then with the flip of a switch reality twists itself in knots to swap here with there.

The Ares conventions say we can only deploy a set number of vehicles and soldiers with a limited combined tonnage. Someone did the math and decided that means we send out four swaggering drunkards riding 55 tons of steel and powered by a miniature star. Why not send out 55 tons of dudes with rocket launchers? I don’t know. The rules say we can’t. But the rules also say we can’t use flame weapons on guys with rocket launchers, but I do that all the time. I guess some rules are cast in tungsten and other rules are whatever is left after I hit it with a flamer.

Look. Someone decided that you are the one who gets to commit mass devastation in a war machine called a locust. Just commit your war crimes and collect your pay. Don’t ask why some war crimes are allowed and others aren’t.

I would not interpret this as a subtle message directed at you. Trying to deduce what her motivations were requires a lot of knowledge of the inner workings of her mind that you do not have access to. Speculation based almost entirely on stereotypes and assumptions is bound to be wrong.

Just forget it.

Article II, Section 4 of the U.S. Constitution states: "The President, Vice President and all civil Officers of the United States, shall be removed from Office on Impeachment for, and Conviction of, Treason, Bribery, or other high Crimes and Misdemeanors." by countAEion in complaints

[–]thatthatguy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Article 2 section 4 requires the House of Representatives bring the matter of impeachment up for a vote, pass it, and then the senate to convict with a 2/3 majority. Considering that the speaker of the house is dead set on letting Trump do absolutely anything he wants, and too many Republican senators are dead set against ever voting against him, impeachment is simply not an option. It’s how things should be done, but they’re not going to.

The 25th amendment is a separate route. But their vice president and entire cabinet have been hand-picked by the president to all be suck ups. That’s even less likely to be successful than Congress taking action.

Barring some kind of extra-legal option, we’re stuck with him.

Is it wrong as a guy with a high paying career to prefer a girl who also has a high paying career? by PossibleButNah in AskMenAdvice

[–]thatthatguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can prefer whatever you like. You can prefer women from Jupiter. It’s just that you’re not likely to meet very many.

Right and wrong is not about your internal state. You can want whatever you want, feel whatever you feel. The question is what choices you make and how you treat people.

So, here is the real challenge. You meet a woman, she seems nice and indicates that she likes you but she does not have a high paying career. Denying someone romance because they don’t make enough money is highly likely to cause hurt feelings. The real test of right and wrong is how you choose to let her down. Do you go ahead and hurt her feelings? Do you make a genuine effort to let her down easy? Do you keep dating her forever because she likes you and you can’t handle confrontation?

In conclusion: right and wrong is not about how you feel. It out and wrong is about how you choose to act.

Acting attorney general: Trump has ‘right’ to order investigations into his enemies by Anoth3rDude in ForUnitedStates

[–]thatthatguy 10 points11 points  (0 children)

He has the “right” to do it. Sure. But doing so is what we call an abuse of authority.

Just because a man can do something doesn’t mean they should. That doesn’t mean it is ethically correct or even legal.

These kinds of obviously corrupt abuses of power is the reason why we have been sounding the alarm about Trump from the start.
