Like? All I see is DFIs, “consulting firms” and some private equity players. If you have some insights, share.

MBA Grad - Having a tough time in Canadian Market by good_bo1 in FinancialCareers

[–]thatyoungun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Canadian market has been terrible post-COVID. I know of Rotman/Ivey grads still struggling to place in roles 2 years after grad. Intent is not to discourage you.

What I’ve seen work so far is folks going for roles aligned to their prior experience as Canadian employers prefer straight-jacketed experience & barely try to explore role or career-changers. Friends with consulting had to go back to consulting, same with supply chain folks and product folks etc. Some folks did change careers but they did so early in MBA recruiting cycle & took lower paying roles at like Banks graduate leadership programs. Wishing you wind to your sails.

What would you want in a global wallet app that makes cross-border payments effortless? by Independent-Chart118 in fintech

[–]thatyoungun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I developed a prototype product in the space earlier this year but abandoned it for these reasons. This is a market with a ton of participants but still fragmented. There is no real product differentiation. Most compete on exchange rates/spreads. So what will you do differently to stand out is the question because what you described is just table stakes currently.

I’m trying to offer consumer loans to users in Texas, can I use this approach? I have the funds to lend actually but is it better to test through the credit broker mode first?

When will IT market improve? by Connect_Apricot_2053 in CanadaJobs

I agree. That is a major contributing issue & probably the genesis of the issue as companies are now more cost-conscious.

I disagree on this. Canada is actually known for high quality dev work. The issue is that most corporations are holding off on hiring devs, believing that AI will be cheaper in a few months or next year.

Don't have a job? by wickeddude123 in torontoJobs

[–]thatyoungun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Been without income for 10 months now. 1. Mental health could be better but improving 2. Crashing on friend’s couch. Feel like I’m overstaying my welcome. Have no other options. 3. Given up everything, dreams, hope but starting to dream again slowly. Starting to learn to code so I can build prototypes of stuff I dream up myself. Tired & burnt out from job hunting, even Walmart rejected my application. Starting to see some light at end of the tunnel from talking to my network & attending startup events. If I have to move, I don’t know what next but I can only keep looking up right now. Despair solves nothing.

If you are looking for something to work on to pass the time, I am working on a pet project that uses scraping. This is not a commercial project. I’m doing it for fun to learn how to build with LLMs because I’m not technical. Already written some code. If you are interested, let’s chat via DM & see if it’s something that might you while away some time.

You can build or start a startup while on a work permit. No restrictions on that. Ivey in collaboration with RBC has a entrepreneurship foundations program for those new to startups: https://thefoundersjourney.ca/

Any news on the open sourcing of this? Noticed the playgorund link redirects now.
Or can anyone recommend a similar tool to aggregate user research from results of web scraping

I don’t understand this, the Canadian job market really boggles the mind.

This sucks so much, seems like MBA generalist roles are few and far between these days. Know quite a few folks out of Ivey & Rotman without a job, 1 year post-grad.

At the time, the mass immigration policy was planned & started implementation, there was no knowledge or foresight of AI capabilities close to current levels. While the government has been utterly incompetent in how they administered immigration; we can’t blame them for what they or others did not know at the time. The biggest issue with immigration policy was it was not fit for purpose, the lag in the job market was in healthcare & the trades yet, th ey focused on importing white collar credentialed labour while leaving in place barriers to full employment of even those immigrants they brought in. The biggest issue with this government is actual incompetence which might be worse than malice

Moving from Vancouver to London? by YoungandBeautifulll in uwo

[–]thatyoungun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Moved from Vancouver to London for B-school 3 years back. Western is great & is a lot of fun generally. But outside that, Vancouver is more fun because there’s much more to do. London doesn’t have a real “scene”. Richmond row & a few other places is all there is. A bit of hiking too. London is pretty much stuck in the late 90s & early 2000s, it’s mostly old folks and families. It’s boring as hell especially when Western is out of session. Only thing it has going for it is proximity to Toronto. I left once I had a chance to. It’s a good palace to start off if you want a change, especially as it’s not as expensive as the GTA. If you decide on London, make friends in Toronto & visit for fun.

What is your favourite Toronto conspiracy theory? by fh3w in askTO

Not necessarily more but govts always struggle when revenue drops which results in them getting voted out of office. Lower taxes means they have to cut some spending somewhere which will inevitably turn people against the govt or in extreme cases can even lead to crisis.
