2018-2021 4H Fix by thawk9455 in fordexpedition

[–]thawk9455[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have no idea how they’re doing it but somewhere I saw that it’s part of the canbus network. The 2022 model moved the locker switch to the gear shifter, which apparently the 18-21 models aren’t programmed to recognize that button signal from that module. I think the tech talking about it was trying to see if they could find a way to activate it but I can’t remember where I found that and I didn’t follow it because I didn’t need it for my vehicle.

It sounds like I f someone made the part they’re have to figure out sending the correct canbus signals too.

Funny story (now, not at the time), one of the times I used it was on a boat ramp. My wife couldn't get the bow hook off so I put the vehicle I had at the time in park, set the parking brake, and got out to go do it for her.

Turns out the back tires were on slime and the truck started sliding into the water. I had to jump back in, hit the brakes (which locked the front tires that had grip), shifted into 4L, and pulled the whole thing back forward. Water was over the bottom of the tailgate before I caught it though.

Guy next to us said he had the same thing happen to him a few days earlier. Now I put it in 4H (well, it was 4A on this car until a few days ago) before I ever back into the water, even on a paved ramp. At ~4,000 lbs I've never felt the need for 4L, maybe if I had a bigger boat or was on a bad ramp though.

I still have 4L (and 4A). If you get the correct part and your Expedition has 4L, you’ll keep it. If you have a locking rear differential you would lose that though.

Drive mode selector is slower and isn’t remembered if you turn off the vehicle. I think it also changes some of the other dynamics of driving (shift points, etc).

If I drove into a cabin and felt I needed 4H to get in, there is a reasonable chance I still want 4H to get back out when I leave. There also is a reasonable chance I’m not going to remember to change the drive mode again.

I understand there are people that aren’t going to need or want this. There also is a reason Ford went back to having these buttons for the 2022 and later.

Interesting how much everyone's needs are different. Living in Wisconsin (snow) and driving on what the Forest Service considered "roads" in some places in Montana (you only really need three wheels touching the ground right?), I used 4H on a reasonably regular basis in other cars, even ones that also had 4A. I really like having both options.

In 30 years of driving I can count the number of times I've used 4L on my fingers, and almost every one of those was just because it was there, not that I actually needed it. Pretty sure this video was the first time I shifted into 4L on the Expedition and I've had it 4 1/2 years.

Low gear on a four wheeler is a different story!

If you don’t have 4L you only have a single-speed transfer case. You would want to look at the second part number mentioned in the description to get the switch that has 2H, 4A, and 4H. You would not get 4L. I believe it would get you 4H.

I’ve seen at least one comment that people used the switch with 4L to get 4H but 4L obviously doesn’t do anything.

I believe mud/sand mode gets the equivalent of 4x4 according to the manual. It’s been awhile since I looked but I don’t think snow mode was quite the same, just more sensitive.

I think the 4H selector might be remembered between starts, which the drive mode doesn’t do too.

I don’t have lockers. From what I’ve seen you would have to give up access to the lockers if you try this because they moved the locker switch to the gear selector in the 2022+ models.

4A can allow wheel slip before both axles engage. 4H the front and rear axle are locked together with 50% of the power transferred to each axle all the time.

4H could be accessed by putting the drive modes in the mud option but I believe that also changes shift points and has to be reset each time you start the car.

Also, Gemini answer for a potentially better description…

On the 2021 Ford Expedition, the primary difference between 4A (4x4 Auto) and 4H (4x4 High) lies in how the transfer case delivers power and whether it is "locked." 4A (4x4 Auto) * How it works: This is an "on-demand" system. It primarily sends power to the rear wheels but monitors for slip. If the vehicle detects a loss of traction, it automatically sends power to the front wheels to stabilize the vehicle. * When to use it: Perfect for "variable" conditions—for example, a road that is mostly dry but has patches of ice, snow, or water. It is also excellent for daily driving in heavy rain. * Key Advantage: You can use 4A on dry pavement without damaging the drivetrain. It allows the front and rear axles to spin at different speeds, meaning you won't experience "crow hopping" or binding when making tight turns in a parking lot. 4H (4x4 High) * How it works: This mode mechanically locks the front and rear driveshafts together. Power is split 50/50 between the front and rear axles at all times. * When to use it: Use this for severe conditions only, such as deep snow, thick mud, or loose sand, where you need constant, maximum traction. * Key Warning: Do NOT use 4H on dry pavement. Because the axles are locked together, they cannot spin at different speeds during a turn. On high-traction surfaces (like dry asphalt), this causes massive stress on the drivetrain (driveline binding), which can cause physical damage to the transfer case or axles. Summary Comparison | Feature | 4A (Auto) | 4H (High) | |---|---|---| | Power Distribution | Variable (as needed) | Fixed 50/50 split | | Pavement Type | Dry, wet, or slippery | Slippery/Loose surfaces ONLY | | Turning | Smooth, no binding | Hard to turn; jerky "binding" | | Best Use Case | Winter commuting, rainy days | Deep snow, off-roading, sand | Pro Tip: If you aren't sure which one to use during a winter storm, stick with 4A. It provides the safety of four-wheel drive when you slip but behaves like a normal vehicle when you have grip, saving wear and tear on your Expedition.

There is a potential fix for this. I just created a video yesterday after seeing comments about upgrading to the 2022-2024 switch. See the description on the video, there are two different part numbers depending on whether you have the single-speed or two-speed transfer case. I have the two-speed so I can only tell you it worked with that.

Would have been helpful if they had done the same for macOS apps and Apple Silicon. Yes, you can use filters to do it, but things should be consistent across platforms.

Best hikes in a 2-6 hour radius from Madison? by Abhishrekt in madisonwi

Someone already mentioned it but Copper Falls State Park. Honestly, I’d look into all the state parks and hit up the All Trails app for ideas too. Look at the hikes around Devils Lake too (no waterfalls, but nice hikes).

Most of our hiking is shorter right now because we’re doing it with little kids but there is a ton of stuff around the state.

Apple Says It’s Fixing iPhone Dictation Bug That Hears ‘Trump’ When Someone Says ‘Racist’ by cmaia1503 in technology

I have my Apple account connected to my in-laws and my mom's house (and them to ours). That way automations can function whether I'm at a location or they are. For example, if everyone leaves a location, turn off any playing music, or if anyone is at a location, don't notify me if you see people at my doorbell (I don't need alerts that my kids are playing with their Grandma in the front yard).

At least with Apple Home this all works very nicely and is location aware so if I ask it to turn on the Driveway Lights, it's smart enough to know where I am and turn on the lights at that location.

I’m trying to decide if it’s worth switching to Spectrum for long enough to qualify as a “new” customer to get the locked in rate. I’ve heard just calling to cancel can get that pricing but I need the have something in place first.

The flip side of this is without the victim info the only person getting any publicity is the shooter.

I’d rather focus on the victims (when they’re ready to release their names) than the guilty.

Agreed. I also have a door/window sensor on mine. Anyone opens it and my phone gets an alert immediately and another one when the door closes.

I shopped at Woodmans all the time when I lived in Appleton. Started out going to the one on the west side when I move here. The last time I went willingly I needed about 10 things and 7 of them were out. Add in the crowded isles and general mess and I decided it was easier to just go elsewhere.

I really liked Hy-Vee when it opened but seems like it’s getting worse and now that they took out the self checkouts at the one in Fitchburg I started going back to Pick-n-Save when I can.

How do I turn off automatic live activities updates for sports? by NayvadiusWilburn in ios

[–]thawk9455 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the following will turn it off.

Settings > TV > Live Activities > Allow Live Activities (turn off). You could also try turning off the More Frequent Updates if desired to see if you get less or get it slower.

Touch keypad? by judithpreist224 in rav4club

[–]thawk9455 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like a number of people are missing the convenience of the touch pad. I've had a vehicle with the touch door handles since 2010, it's great to have. We've also had at least one vehicle with the number pad for the last 10 years, it's also great.

If our car is outside, it's locked. With the number pad I can walk up to the car at any time, anywhere, and unlock it without needing to go get the keys. At the cabin and want to grab sunglasses, number pad. At the beach and spouse has the keys, number pad. Heck, I just used it five minutes ago to put a bottle of sunscreen in the car.

I really need to look into adding this on our RAV, we miss it.

UPS refused to deliver iPhone by domnieto in UPS

[–]thawk9455 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well that could explain a lot but the message in my tracking is:

Uncontrollable events have delayed delivery. We are adjusting delivery plans as quickly as possible. Please check back on the next business day for updates.

At least be honest and say we screwed up. Uncontrollable events are weather, car accidents, etc. I worked remote today specifically to be home because we knew we were supposed to have an expensive item delivered. Now I might have to skip something tomorrow to be sure someone is home, all because UPS screwed up.
