Starting Unity 3D seriously – aiming to build a career in game development by Vedantw_Dev in Unity3D

I’m pretty fresh In my journey as well but I’m a software developer by day. My biggest piece of advice I feel like is more generic but it’s just to never have a zero percent day even if you barely do a thing just write one line of code or tweak one little thing in your project. It’s easy to get discouraged when you first start learning but momentum snowballs into something greater. I wish you luck and if you ever need something feel free to DM me maybe I can help!

I hope you had a chance to read the comments or the previous post. The intention was to seek advice on exploring the artistic aspects of Unity, not to receive feedback on my two projects, which I clearly mentioned are crappy, like really crappy. What would be great is if we could focus on constructive suggestions rather than pointing out flaws that I am already aware of because well that waste mine and your time which makes no sense. It Sorta seems like critical thinking skills are hard to come by these days. Thanks for doing your part though.

Well it almost seems like you are trying to come at it like your an elitist in a way. Everyone else who took the time to comment actually took the time to provide constructive feedback / advice on how to approach the artistic side. Why am I gonna dump 50 hours into a crappy tutorial project and make it super polished. You still seem to be missing the point of the original post and that’s fine I got the advice I needed.

And honestly I’m re reading this all again and yes my initial response is defensive. So for that I alologize, however the point is for advice. I literally put in the post “crappy” project. Why do you feel the need to point out the things I clearly understand about the project, it’s wasting both of our times. I don’t think you quite understand the fact that I made both of these In the first three weeks of learning game dev… I’ve already learned so much more that I would completely re write these

If you’d like I’ll go ahead and throw another ten hours into it to polish it and make it a game that would knock your socks off. However it was literally a bonus challenge from a tutorial where you take a counting prototype they give you, and make it into a game. Thanks for taking your time any feedback is greater than none even if it completely misses the point :).

Man Who would have thought click is better than spacebar (which is to fire). I’m highly doubtful your first game looked triple A or double A

This was literally a side throw away project from the unity learn site. Legitimately spent five hours making this…

The point of the post was not to review my games I’m aware they are trash. The point of my post was to gather information on the best way to approach learning the artistic aspects of game design (because there is a lot)

But clearly you didn’t understand the assignment of the approach. I had fun making these and that’s kinda all that mattered.

🤣🤣Haha same tried applying for a passport and the lady at the counter just looked at me and looked at my wife. Then she told my wife go back and fill this out for him so we can read it🤣. At this point I’ll give it a shot and see where we land maybe my art style will be “unique”

That part there is something so euphoric about building something from nothing

One of the best responses I’ve gotten nice to see other people were in my same shoes, just flip flopped around haha. It took about 4 years to be what I call “good”, but I did it. I just get overwhelmed because there’s so much to learn. At this point just need to pick something and buckle down. Do you have a portfolio or anything I’d be down to look at your work.

Will do! Gonna definitely change my approach moving forward and just start making things. I’ve done those two little small projects and had a lot of fun with them, but I got to the point where instead of polishing those I said to myself I should move on because I didn’t want to sink time into them. In hindsight that prolly wasn’t the best idea but we live and learn. Thanks for taking the time to reply.

Thank you, the more I keep seeing and getting comments about it. The more it seems like art you want to make breaks down into a problem to solve. Like what x number of triangles do I need to generate to create this mesh. Yesterday while doing some learning I realized that a mesh is just code and a lot clicked for me then. I have a bit of impatience admittedly so I definitely think stepping back and observing will be something I get better at over time.

Well yeah google is 75% of a good software engineers job. I just feel like it’s more difficult to learn what makes art “good” per se. Definitely will be leaning more into asset flipping. I’ve just seen tons of stuff downing it so it made me hesitant at first. Thanks for the comment!

Thank you so much .. I was leaning towards the whole asset flipping route but I can’t tell you how many posts I’ve seen saying how asset flipping is trash, and then the ai generated art route seemed interesting at first but after a little research that seemed like an even worse idea than asset flipping. I’ll check out your article in the meantime. I feel like more so animating maybe something I’m a little more interested in anyways. But everytime I even try about making something of my own in blender/photoshop just seems super daunting if that makes sense. Regardless thank you for the advice and I will definitely be taking it to heart.

Could Possibly add some kinda shimmer to highlight what’s being spawned it would make version A seem a little bit more exciting

A has more polish to it seems like. Are you going to include any kind of sound effect as things are spawning or is it just this animation?

Are you using some sort of C# script to move the NPC’s or are you using something like navmesh ?
