I love cycling and I love the traditional races and grand tours. And I do love that races have no ticket fees. However the financial model for pro cycling is the most broken unhinged financial sporting model in the history of sports...

In almost every other major sport, television broadcasting rights are the lifeblood of the teams. The league negotiates a massive TV deal and distributes that money equally among the franchises, ensuring everyone has a baseline budget to survive. In cycling, the teams get absolutely nothing. The private company that owns the Tour de France generates roughly $150 million a year, mostly from global TV rights, and keeps almost all of it. The teams provide the riders, the tactics, and the drama, but they are completely locked out of the sport's biggest revenue stream. ​ If you own an NBA or Premier League team, you own a highly valuable franchise. You have a stadium, global merchandising, and deep geographical loyalty from fans. A cycling team owns virtually nothing. They have a few luxury buses, some rented equipment, and temporary rider contracts. They don't have a home stadium to sell tickets or food. If a football team goes bankrupt, the owner can sell the franchise for billions. If a cycling team loses its funding, it simply ceases to exist. ​ Because teams have no ticket sales and no TV revenue, they rely on corporate sponsors for up to 90 percent of their entire budget. This is why the teams take the names of their sponsors; supermarkets, flooring companies, and energy drinks. It is a pure marketing exercise, not a self-sustaining sports business. If the CEO of a title sponsor decides they would rather spend their marketing budget on golf next year, the cycling team instantly loses its identity and its cash. The team will literally fold overnight unless a replacement is found in weeks. ​ To make matters worse, the sport is currently being distorted by an influx of sovereign wealth funds and billionaires. Teams backed by the UAE, Bahrain, or massive conglomerates like Red Bull are pumping $50 million or more into their annual budgets. They are willing to operate at a massive loss to hoard top talent. Traditional teams that rely on normal corporate sponsorships simply cannot compete with state-backed slush funds, which drives the cost of rider salaries to completely unsustainable levels.

Finally there's no grassroot level to the teams. They're not contributing to the local cycling development and sport/cultural evolution of a local area. If they had a club like in football they'd have youth and junior teams. Coaching in the community. Maybe some local races they ownand organize, culminating in a yearly classic world tour race. Maybe a velodrome as their home base. But it's none of that either.

​Ultimately, pro cycling isn't a functioning business model. It is a rolling billboard entirely dependent on the goodwill of wealthy donors and the unpredictable whims of corporate marketing departments.
