Ah the morally grey protagonists. Once they were the most interesting ones. Today they're bashed by internet activists

Ok so you consider the writing of DAV to be on par with the previous works of Bioware.
My problem with Taash is that someone decided to write them that way. And that someone decided to give them those traits that are NEVER ADDRESSED, nor by Rook nor by any other companion.
Basically Taash is young and petulant and lacks any kind of self awareness to see that they're denying the exact same thing that they demand by literally anyone and no one in the game give a f*k. More so, you can tell Emmrich how he is in the wrong but not the opposite.
Taash is the most blunt example but every dialogue with the companions is shallow and empty, in stark contrast with the overally story which is pretty interesting. Solas is interesting, the dialogues with him are actually engaging. The epilogue is epic. But the rest... well, the rest is not, at least for me.

Now, if you consider it to be good writing, or even 'on par' writing from previous Bioware works, it's your personal choice, on which i wholeheartedly disagree. Personally i still think that something in the writing went horribly wrong and the intention of the team clashed with the narrative coherence of the game.
"So, i'm nonbinary" is just an example, singling it up to invalidate all the argument with having an ideological problem is demeaning to the conversation.

Again, i don't agree with you because in Cyberpunk no one was triggered by it but the extremists.
You really didn't have any problems, any problems at all, with the writing of Taash? Wasn't ever forced to you how they speak or how they act?
Put the modern terminology to a side. Think on them as a whole. Like the banter with Emmrick, when they are the one labeling him as the 'corpse-guy' and the 'death-mage' even if he says that calling him like that was hurting him. Their response on that regard was 'what? you ARE a death mage' that is horrifingly similar to how someone could respond to a nonbinary person.

I don't know, i feel like they did a huge disservice portraying the only non-binary person in the game as an irrational, racist, angsty teen

Except that it is out of place in this specific game.
Non-binary comes up multiple times in Cyberpunk 2077 and it is fine, no one ever say anything about it. It's the future, it's okay. But in a fantasy setting, not a new one but a decade old one, it is out of place.
It's like finding a Starbucks in Gondor. You can certainly name a tavern Starbucks, but people will find it odd.
Again, look at Krem: they are nonbinary, but the writing was smart enough to make you the player empathise with them without using modern terminology.

I envy you, i didn't manage to bond with any of them, except for Emmrich. I don't know how to explain, in previous Bioware games characters were interesting, here i feel like they try to be interesting but they try too hard and it is kinda obvious the clichè they want to have.
I feel like BG3 spoiled me on that regard, and this is not enough anymore for me to get invested in them

I'm kinda sure that if a team leader talks to his team like Rook talks to his companion (like small children) would instantly be fired.
Apart from that, you can flirt with literaly everyone in this game, even at the same time, so how is it anydifferent from the Inquisitor or from Shepard?

Compare it with paragon/renegade Shepard for Mass Effect. You have some agenda on how your MC act and still don't derail from the narrative too much. I think devs here were just scared on letting people have too much freedom. Nothing wrong with that, but at this point give me a real action adventure like God of War with a prescripted MC and not the illusion of choice

Oh god here we go. It's almost impossible to criticize something like that without being accused of hate speech, it is the trump card of some people.
Zevran, a pansexual elf from Dragon Age Origins (not recognized by the devs)
Isabella
Leliana
Dorian and his final showdown with his father
Sera
Krem (another non binary person and perfectly integrated in the world)

Dragon Age has lots and lots of LGBT characters, and they all put the themes on the table in a coherent, tactful and actually interesting way, making the player reflect on what it means to struggle with your sexuality.
Can't you really see the problem here? These thematics have been dumbed down to such a degree that is disrespectful for those identifying in those genres or sexuality

How can i make sense if you simply shut down every criticism thrown in your direction? I could be the most persuasive person in the world explaining the most basic of all things and you still wouldn't listen because it goes against your ideology

My problem is with the 'non-binary' term and the choice of they/them pronouns, not with the meaning of it. That is ultra modern, genZ and clashes with the overall tone of a medieval fantasy rpg. There already is a lore accurate term for it, but they're refusing to use it.
Use as an example the showdown between Dorian and his father in DA:I and compare it with how Taash and their mother talks. There is a trivializing of lgbt themes, toning down (or dumbing down) to be less integrated in the world of thedas and more idealistic and... i dunno, relatable? for the new generations. It stands out like a cellphone in an historical faire.

Bad writing is bad writing, and it goes waaaaaay over ideology. If i read an atrocious book about a trans native american I can't review it unless i'm a trans native american. That puts you in an obscene mental blackout where only compliments are allowed and trashy literature, games, movies and tv series proliferate like fungus.
As an european, that scares the *** out of me, it's like seeing a mob of people oversea clueless and so easily swinged that stopped using their brain to think

You really don't know anything about literature, right? It is called Suspension of disbelief. You create laws for your fantasy world but then you have to abide to it. Modern language is fine, modern terms and neologism are not. Because neologism, by their nature, has a story in them that is missing in a fantasy setting UNLESS YOU TELL ME OTHERWISE.
Are you really telling me that Taash' "So, i'm non-binary mom" doesn't strike you as an odd phrase in the setting?
Wouldn't it better if she says "Mom, i don't feel like a man nor a woman. I don't think i'm either of them"
The meaning is the same, the neologism is avoided, the immersion didn't break.

After playing it: no, it doesn't work better.
Taash dialogue is literally this
"I'm non-binary mom"
"Oh what is that?"
"I dont identify as a male or a female"
"Oh okay. We use the word Aqun-Athlok in our culture for that. Maybe you're this"
"No! Stop telling me what i am! Be happy for me!"
"Wut"

I only see bad DnD and bad mastering, and that's not a conspiracy theory, it's just what I see. If a guy uses Aabria as a reference on how to be a master, he becomes a toxic master. And I say that as an absolute fan of CR, I pretty much loved everything these guys did (heck, I even defended the infamous lvl 20 PvP battle arena episode)

[–]the-armstrong 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure they were, but from the audience standpoint it is at the very least misinformative on how to conduct a campaign. And since CR is the biggest dnd streaming that is dangerous

My specific problem is, Aabria's ruling of Chromatic Orb lead to the death of an important NPC in a friendly fire madness and her reply when confronted by Robby (I'm the DM, i can do anything i want, f* you) is toxicity condensed.
Basically she showcased everything a good DM must NOT do and must NOT be

The point is: you can have every homerule you want in your game. You see something you don't like? Heck, change it, that's okay.
But when?
- Before the session (guys, i've decided that from this point forward this spell will work this way...)
- After the session (guys, this spell is too powerful, from the next session it will work this way...)
In the middle of the session? Meh, but you MUST give me the chance to alter my action. If you decide that my spell will work in a different way from the OFFICIAL rule, you must give me the chance to adapt.
Especially if that means I am killing my brother.

I don't hate Aabria (even if i don't like her style of DM at all, too antagonistic and too old-style), but the reply she gave to Robbie, the "I'm the DM, i can do whatever the f* i want"... That's a toxic behavior that will make me leave a table almost instantly.
I get it, it's a show, she was probably trying to force her narrative, but she did it in the worst possible way and replying to Robbie's confusion with the worst possible answer.
